I probably just misread your post.
It's been a long day.

Sorry to hear that, Kev. Yeah I was only referring to the tracked-in "Mant" score not being included, which is what I assumed you were talking about.

Love scratching off these titles from the complete grail list! That list is getting so small now…

Only if you don't include any of the TV stuff... wink

My least favorite Goldsmith/Dante is easily "Boo!", the Amazing Stories episode they collaborated on. It's...fine?

Yavar

I enjoy Boo! way more than Matinee. I typically love Goldsmith's work, especially with Dante, but this one just lacks that spark. I may have listened to the full album twice. This may be the one Goldsmith/Dante expansion I skip. I haven't seen the movie so I don't know what's missing.

I think you'd appreciate Matinee quite a lot more if you see the movie (it's wonderful, and plenty of "spark" for me.)

And to be perfectly fair maybe I'd enjoy "Boo!" if I saw the TV episode! (I must confess I've actually never seen a single episode of Amazing Stories.)

For anyone interested in more details about the source of where the "Mant" music came from, by sheer coincidence there was actually a post about the Dick Jacobs LP in question, earlier this very month at FSM:

I wouldn't bet on it. As somebody who saw every single episode, because hope sprang eternal, the series was the biggest let-down of my then-young life. Elaborate (at the time) production values (and scores) and big-name directors all for quarter-baked stories that Spielberg probably dreamed up as he brushed his teeth that morning. There are a few (very few) okay episodes, but "Boo!" is not among them.

I think this plays as MUCH less repetitive in complete form, Kev. There are actually quite a few different varied themes that get developed throughout the score, and it's got more range than you remember (or demonstrated by the previous album). Much more complex than Rudy, honestly (much more thematic material).

Yes the missing action music is here and it's wonderful. The "pseudo old style Monster Music" is NOT here because it's not pseudo: "Mant" was tracked by editor Marshall Harvey using a late 50s LP re-recording of *actual* Universal Monster Music! He talks about it in our imminent Soundtrack Spotlight podcast episode.

As for "The Shook-Up Shopping Cart", we all assumed Goldsmith wrote that fun bit, but in our Spotlight conversation, Marshall and Joe (Dante) set the record straight and revealed it was actually Alexander Courage.

Yeah, I remember Marshall talking about the same thing, tracking the MANT sequences, when I interviewed him on my podcast several years ago...

Totally agree as another who was watching at the time. "The Mission" had so much promise and it was just... ludicrous by the end. "Boo!" just failed to register in any way.

Maybe seeing it would at least help me appreciate the music Goldsmith wrote for it more, though?

That's how I would describe the music... which is not only shocking and unusual for a Goldsmith score, but even more shocking and unusual for a Goldsmith written for Dante. Each and every one of their feature film collaborations is distinctive and interesting to me... even Gremlins which I find quite grating at times. smile

Oooh! Do you have a link to your podcast episode?

Ha ha! I personally have no problem with 2 disc releases. Whatever our wonderful labels want/need to do, I’ll support!

Having written the notes for this release, I can concur that the score plays significantly better in complete form! There's more variety, more development, a much more elaborate final stretch ... I found the old album to be perfectly charming, but it wasn't necessarily among my very favorite Goldsmith/Dante scores. The new Intrada program has raised my estimation of this one considerably!

That's so good to hear! The original has never gotten much play from me. I didn't have anything against it, it just never grabbed me. But what I said about hope springing eternal about "Amazing Stories" episodes goes double for Goldsmith releases!

Woah, very excited! I’ve never listened to this before (some Goldsmith titles I’ve just been waiting for expansions before I ever listen to them).

Sweet! I watched the film months ago and definitely noticed a lot of pretty cool unreleased stuff, certainly enough to completely redefine how I feel about the original release.
