What was the third?

Per Jon Burlingame, it started as Only in America, got renamed The Promised Land, then The Best of Times, then it went back to Only in America. The IMDB isn't super helpful, listing The Best of Times, which is about a Jewish immigrant family in turn of the (20th) century America, as a TV Movie, with a "more like this" suggestion of For Your Eyes Only, but it was produced as a pilot, not picked up for a series and never aired.

Given the presence of Topol as the lead and the Jewish immigrant story, I wonder if the idea was to capitalize on Topol's success in Fiddler on the Roof - a pseudo sequel? Regardless, new Jerry Goldsmith music is nearly 50 year old gift!

Exciting news. (And I am so glad I have been buying the other Fox collections since I would never have skipped this one and I like having the full set - with hopefully more to follow.)

I think I'd heard Topol tended to be hard to work with, so I'm not shocked a weekly series didn't work out. But having seen Fiddler in the Roof, The Public Eye and For Your Eyes Only on the big screen this year, I can't get enough of that guy's voice. (not that it makes me eager to watch Flash Gordon again, which, like every bad film of the 80s and 90s, seems to have a devoted following now...)

Not a fan of Topol, myself, but I nonetheless recommend Joseph Losey's mid-'70s Galileo in which Topol starred.
Topol was also in one of the last - if not the very last - segments of TV's TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED.

I'm looking forward to this title.

It's been a very, very long time since a title was announced that would contain so much new music for me—and from a heyday period too.

Cheers

I already have previous releases of five of the seven titles. Are any/all of those now expanded?

Yes. You (and others in this thread) will I suspect be pleased with the final tracklist when LLL reveals it. I don’t want to steal their thunder when it comes to tracklist details… we will release a Goldsmith Odyssey podcast episode (with a lot of sound clips of the previously unreleased music) a few days before they make it available for ordering though!

Film music restoration experts Mike Matessino and Chris Malone join your humble hosts Yavar and David to discuss the varied challenges of working on seven different Goldsmith television projects composed between 1968 and 1975: Anna and the King, A Girl Named Sooner, Nick Quarry, Only in America, Prudence and the Chief, Room 222, and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. You'll hear excerpts from all of these scores, along with discussion of where certain elements were found, which projects required the greatest degree of restoration work, how Goldsmith's work fits within the musical conventions of the era, and much more! This is one of the most exciting Goldsmith releases in some time (boasting two premieres and two significant expansions), so tune in and get a taste while waiting for your copy to arrive!

So Chris is back right on the heels of talking about Seconds with us, and Mike Matessino has also been generous with his time and returns for his second talk with us in a month! ... Except that the first one actually comes out later (it's quite a production, still being worked on). Fortunately, Wes Deckers stepped in to put this one together, so it could arrive right on time!

As has been stated many times here in recent years, these limited editions don't really sell out that fast anymore, even when it's Goldsmith. You should be fine.

Is that everything Jerry recorded for "Only in America"?

Is that everything Jerry recorded for "Only in America"?

As revealed by Mike Mattesino in the Soundtrack Spotlight podcast, no music-only source for it could be found, so these four short cues are what could be salvaged from the combined audio from a 35mm film print in the 20th Century Fox holdings. The film is available for public viewing at the UCLA Film & Television Library (in fact they have two different copies, under two of the three titles it had at various points!) Would anyone here who lives in LA like to go there and report back about any other music in it? This might be a job for Leigh Phillips, to reconstruct by ear and newly record as he did brilliantly earlier this year for the General Electric Theater’s “The Bar Mitzvah of Major Orlovsky”.

I think the reason Fox archived a music-only element for Prudence and the Chief is that, even though it was another unsold pilot… it actually aired at least once on TV! I think for something that never aired at all like Only in America, nobody thought there was any point to saving composite elements.

Yavar
