I'm listening to this on YT and just heard Horner's riff on Chariots of Fire. Was that a parody in the film or another case of Horner "borrowing"?

Parody in the film. Makes perfect sense in context.

Thxs!

Having heard the score now I really don't think it sounds like An American Tail or anything else. Maybe a little bit of Casper?
But the thematic drive is pretty much based on the song for the film. The last four or so tracks are glorious.

Exactly, the final sequence of tracks is fantastic -- I'm just hoping an alternate version is provided of "He Carves the Roast Beast" without Carrey's hammy vocal.

We had to license that from the publisher so it's more or less a direct lift

Context is key. "Chariots of Fire" is used in the scene because it's a race. This isn't a case of a composer slyly borrowing another work, it's a reference to a film about racing.

Interesting. Chariots of Fire was referenced in an Anime called "Gunbuster" during a training/running montage. It exists on the old VHS tapes but they had to remove that track when it was released on DVD and Blu Ray.

Cue only:

The edited scene:

It was also parodied in Mr. Mom and I'm sure other programs, too. It's a piece of pop culture. As soon as you hear it, you know what it is and what it's doing.

The people who complain about not wanting a particular release are so baffling. I probably don't care about 75% of all the releases people on this site talk about and promote. Strangely, I have no need to pop into every single one of those threads to declare that I don't want it and will not buy it.

What do you think you are adding to the discourse? I'm sure it's just attention-seeking, but the "I'm not buying this watermelon" thing is beyond tedious and, honestly, completely juvenile. The Anti-Fandom cynicism that permeates almost every community these days is exhausting.

sorry for the rant

I will buy it. Does it include the vocal stylings of pre-The Pretty Reckless-and-Gossip Girl Taylor Momsen?

I saw this movie whenever it came out, and I do remember there being a pretty theme though for some reason I never sought the score out. But I wanted to add here that - not unlike "Hollow Man" from the same year - there were indeed calls for an expansion of "The Grinch" on film music forums right after the original album came out, so this is something people have wanted for a long time.

Well, apart from Ado not showing much enthusiasm for this lovely festive score (and even Solium has had a Grinch-like Change Of The Heart), the response to this release has been nearly 100% positive.
So maybe there's hope for FSM yet.
I know I will be adding it to my next Intrada order, together with any other goodies that might be coming before years' end.

I hardly said much at all about it, the backlash against me far surpassed my fairly mild remarks, it was out of proportion. I just think we cannot call every single score Horner made 'top Horner", nor, any other composer for that matter.

And yes, I do not think every single Horner score, or any other composer for that matter, demands expansion. I can see the idea that the tracked dialogue was a mess on this one.

Beyond the 30 missing instrumental minutes, I hope that this new edition will allow us to hear the 3 unreleased songs composed by James Horner before the filming : "Who-bilation" whose melody is repeated several times in the middle of the story, but also "How I Love Who-liday Shopping" and "Come, Come All Ye Whos"
The lyrics are available on the website of the lyricist Cynthia Weil.
For various reasons that will be discussed in the book, these songs were shortened or became almost inaudible in the film. But they are an integral part of James Horner's work on the film.

That was Ron Howard's first request. In early 1999, the director asked James Horner to start working on 'How the Grinch Stoles Christmas’ by writing five songs that would be sung during the filming scheduled for September 1999.
Two of them were on the first album. So three are missing.

@jb,

what book?

what book?

It's just a little 1200 page book I'm writing about James Horner.

It is the culmination of ten years of research and five years of writing. The source material comprises 400 referenced sources, including 70 exclusive interviews with directors, producers, and musicians, as well as 40 hours of recorded interviews with James Horner’s family and close associates.

In order to tell the story of the creation of the How the Grinch Stole Christmas score, we interviewed the music editors, the synthesizer programmer and the music supervisor (thanks drivingmissdaisy).
I was also able to find in the archives of NBC Universal an unpublished interview of James Horner entirely dedicated to this film.

I didn't have a change of heart. I was agnostic as I wasn't familiar with the score because I can't stomach the film. Ive seen bits and pieces of it.

While its not one of Horner's best scores I do think there's some rich material here, like I said I love the last quarter of the soundtrack and the underlying main theme though out. Regardless what I though of the score, I do think it merits an expansion for the reasons you gave.

"The original CD release had dialogue excerpts and sound FX, plus songs scattered throughout it. That's pretty much the first 3 signs of the apocalypse for score fans."

Ado is free to voice his opinion. He's just straight forward. Our beloved forum owner Lukas is known for being brutally honest (and uncensored) but doesn't get the same backlash.

I love Horner's song WHERE ARE YOU CHRISTMAS so I should love this score which features the melody.
