I asked for Delerue's "Anne of the Thousand Days". So I'm satisfied. Anne was Elizabeth's mum and Elizabeth and Mary Queen of Scots were cousins. So I can't complain.
Hey Amer, I still have the LP below. Way back when, my Dad's got the radio on in the kitchen to an easy listening station and this beautiful music is playing that really caught my attention. It was "Mary's Theme." I had to have been in my teens and like all teens wouldn't get near the far right side of the FM band in those days. So I secretly tucked it into the mind's ear for future reference. Same with the name "Barry" or whatever that the announcer mentioned. Don't tell anyone!
oh and here're the times from the back cover (slightly different/less)-- SIDE 1 1. Mary’s Theme (2:30) 2. Vivre Et Mourir (2:31) 3. But Not Through My Realm (2:30) 4. Journey To Scotland (1:41) 5. Black Night (2:33) 6. Escape With Bothwell (2:15)
SIDE 2 1. Mary’s Theme (1:20) 2. Journey To England (2:25) 3. Death At Kirk O’Fields (1:45) 4. March To The Castle (1:52) 5. Mary At Chartley (1:30) 6. The Execution (1:55) REPRISE (A) Vivre Et Mourir (1:44) (B) Mary’s Theme (1:14)
Dear HOWARD. What lovely story. You know .love at first sight( or hearing as it may be) and you were a teenager.
-------------- "the first release of the entire score, thanks to the recent discovery of previously unknown tape rolls in the Universal vault." -------------
Are there any photos of this magical, mysterious, arcane "Universal vault"?
Where, just where do you find this stuff, apparently having lain there unmarked, uncatalogued, for decades?
I bet they found it right next to a big wooden crate with a charred swastika on the side... :-)
"Masterpiece" is always debatable, but it is certainly a very fine film score. I'd suggest you take in the film, which is legitimately quite entertaining, to experience its effect.
John Caps, in an edition of Elmer Bernstein's Film Music Notebook (now collected in book form) wrote an article called "The John Barry Triptych." In fifteen hefty paragraphs Caps examines the scores for The Lion in Winter, The Last Valley, and Mary, Queen of Scots. Thoughtful and insightful and well worth the read.

Will search for this. Seems to be really interesting.
2001 Silva released Robin & Marian, The Last Valley (with a Mary, Queen Of Scots Suite) and Lion In Winter. I liked all of them.
Wow, this is the best updated release that i want since collecting, Barry's score is so beautiful very powerful too, i'll still keep the Intrada for nostalgia purposes, many thanks for this Quartet team - well-done.
