Yeah, it pretty much all sucks, or I’m just super jaded. I don't think it's a case of jaded at all. At our age, we've seen it all already and our BS detectors are fairly finely honed. And we are not saying that everything is garbage--just a lot of it, generally speaking. I don't think it's not being jaded, I think movies do generally suck now because of how they're written and filmed. Everything is quirky, ironic, and most prevalently meta-textual where the movie is literally commenting on itself to subvert expectations. In short, all of that results in many movies now being devoid of the emotionally honest sincerity. When we do see something "emotional", the version that we see is indeed pretentious, because it's emotion derived from fabricating an unrealistic "grey area" where a character is neither good or bad, and expectations are subverted. Oh this evil villain is so evil but wait, they have a sad backstory that humanizes them... That is indeed pretentious because it's based on the pretentious belief that "good vs. evil" is too simple for audiences. And the end result is that movies spend so much time delving very self-indulgently into a modern day version of "character". Except, that "character" now is empty because there is no emotionally honest sincerity. These "characters" don't fight for anything, grow anywhere, exist for any story purpose; they exist solely to be explored in the most predictable "expectation-subverting" ways, in short, to be anarchists. And compared to real life emotions, nothing could be further from the truth. The new expectation-subverting complexity, in trying to avoid the predictable fairytale simplicity, has just made "expectation-subverting" the predictable thing. TLDR: Many current movies get in the way of themselves by making pretentiously and unrealistically "complex" stories simply to avoid presenting straightforward, emotionally honest sincerity, for fear of seeming schmaltzy or cheesy. That's creative self-consciousness, and self-consciousness is always going to be inclined to be pretentious because pretentiousness is a self-conscious state.
