Geez, that's gonna outrage the left and the right! In 40 years the young actress will accuse the director and studio of exploiting her as a child and the film will end up a cult classic though it looks pretentious to me.

Lol reminds me of this meme I saw recently of a shocked Joe Rogan that said "Marvel fans when the CGI good guy beats the CGI bad guy in a CGI fight in a CGI location" or something along those lines. So freaken true.

Clearly sounds like sour grapes that Rogan was never tapped for a MCU flick.
Of course, why would he be?

He fit right in today as the masculine dope.

No Judy Blume fans here, I see.

Pretentious? What looks pretentious about it? I think we've collectively stripped meaning of the word around here. And don't we wanna outrage the Left and the Right? Both political spectrums are filled with the biggest dullards of all time.

While I never read this book (it was more for my sisters) I did read and love novels like Superfudge, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, and her story collection Places I Never Meant to Be. I'm already shocked to see people in this very thread calling this movie "pretentious" and "shocking" being that it is based on a children's book from the Vietnam War era.

Yeah, that trailer does look pretty pretentious.
Actually, maybe more cringey than pretentious.
I don't recall the book being a comedy, but I read it as a kid so long ago that it may very well have been a comedy.
My sense is that the trailer is cut that way as a marketing ploy.

At any rate, it's James Brooks--so maybe he'll pull a rabbit out of the hat with this.

Is there anything that doesn't look pretentious to people these days? Nolan films are pretentious. Villeneuve films are pretentious. A24 films are pretentious. Serious dramas are pretentious. Everything is too woke to self-important...where are all the silly beat the terrorist films?

Just Hollywoods idea of slice of life or teenage angst leaves much to be desired. Agree with your second point!

Yeah, it pretty much all sucks, or I’m just super jaded.

I think it could be firmly written in record that you are one of the most jaded people on Earth, Solium. No offense meant.

I don't think it's a case of jaded at all.
At our age, we've seen it all already and our BS detectors are fairly finely honed.
And we are not saying that everything is garbage--just a lot of it, generally speaking.

Any more news on a soundtrack release of this? As far as I can tell, the movie premiered in late April.

I don't think it's not being jaded, I think movies do generally suck now because of how they're written and filmed.

Everything is quirky, ironic, and most prevalently meta-textual where the movie is literally commenting on itself to subvert expectations.

In short, all of that results in many movies now being devoid of the emotionally honest sincerity.

When we do see something "emotional", the version that we see is indeed pretentious, because it's emotion derived from fabricating an unrealistic "grey area" where a character is neither good or bad, and expectations are subverted.

Oh this evil villain is so evil but wait, they have a sad backstory that humanizes them...

That is indeed pretentious because it's based on the pretentious belief that "good vs. evil" is too simple for audiences. And the end result is that movies spend so much time delving very self-indulgently into a modern day version of "character". Except, that "character" now is empty because there is no emotionally honest sincerity. These "characters" don't fight for anything, grow anywhere, exist for any story purpose; they exist solely to be explored in the most predictable "expectation-subverting" ways, in short, to be anarchists. And compared to real life emotions, nothing could be further from the truth.

The new expectation-subverting complexity, in trying to avoid the predictable fairytale simplicity, has just made "expectation-subverting" the predictable thing.

TLDR: Many current movies get in the way of themselves by making pretentiously and unrealistically "complex" stories simply to avoid presenting straightforward, emotionally honest sincerity, for fear of seeming schmaltzy or cheesy. That's creative self-consciousness, and self-consciousness is always going to be inclined to be pretentious because pretentiousness is a self-conscious state.

Anyway...

It's a shame Lionsgate really dumped this release. While this film was well-received critically and has an "A" Cinemascore but barely tapped $20 million in box office opening on over 3,000 screens in North America. My wife and I expected to see it in cinemas but it was only playing here in San Antonio for barely a week. Opening against The Super Mario Bros Movie and Evil Dead Rise just didn't turn into the counterprogramming asset they assumed. I don't think anyone at all was prepared for just how huge Super Mario was, either.

Like Thor, I hope there will be a score release from Zimmer. I too am bewildered as to why there hasn't been one.

Indeed. And not even any buzz or blurbs about it, nor samples (AFAIK). Weird for one of the world's most famous film composers.

It had happened before with his low-profile, lesser known movies.

Yeah, but that's a long time ago, right? Things like THE WEATHER MAN (2005), which finally got a release recently. Not now when he's a superstar. "Smaller", recent films like THE SON or THE SURVIVOR or REBUILDING PARADISE all received soundtrack releases upon the films' release.

You are right, however it still happens now and then, for instance his score for The Last Face (2016) has never been released. But who knows, maybe these albums will come sooner or later.
