“RAT RACE: LIMITED EDITION”
Music by Elmer Bernstein
Limited Edition of 1000 Units

RETAIL PRICE: $21.98
STARTS SHIPPING MAY 9

https://lalalandrecords.com/rat-race-limited-edition/

La-La Land Records and Paramount Pictures present the world premiere release of legendary composer Elmer Bernstein’s (THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, AIRPLANE!, GHOSTBUSTERS) original unused score to the raucous 2001 big-screen comedy RAT RACE, starring Rowan Atkinson, Whoopi Goldberg and Jon Lovitz, and directed by Jerry Zucker.

Having scored such legendary comedies as AIRPLANE!, ANIMAL HOUSE, GHOSTBUSTERS, STRIPES as well as many others, it’s no accident that Maestro Bernstein was initially the composer of choice for this madcap ensemble comedy in the vein of IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD. Now for the first time, and with the blessing of the composer’s family, Bernstein’s take on the film is here for us all to enjoy and it’s an orchestral comic delight – a rollicking wonder that embraces the film’s outlandish, desperate characters and overall cartoonish verve. The composer’s approach is as off-the-wall as it is classical – an impressively energetic and complex work of comedic scoring.

Produced by Dan Goldwasser and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this limited edition CD release of 1000 units features exclusive, in-depth liner notes by writer Daniel Schweiger, with new comments by the composer’s son, Peter Bernstein and the composer’s protégé, Bear McCreary, and zippy art design by Goldwasser.

It's hard not to make this sound like a complaint, but blimey, that's quite short! Given that there are alternates and album versions, I'm guessing that is in fact the sum total of what he wrote for the film. It seems surprising that barely 20 minutes of score was considered sufficiently detrimental to the film that they didn't just mix it low rather than go through the expense of hiring John Powell to write a replacement (who I'm not sure would have been an obvious replacement choice in 2001 for this kind of film?!). Still, look forward to hearing it, always up for some more Elmer.

The Powell album is only 35 minutes, though of course just score with no alternates. So it's likely not a composer decision there's so little, and/or what Bernstein recorded isn't everything he actually wrote....

Still would be a much easier ask if both were on the CD (granted no idea if any of Powell's score is missing....). We'll see I suppose.

Powell score rights still belong to Beyond Records aka UME now. Too expensive to sublicense.

I’m checking out the new Bernstein Rat Race sound clips and really enjoying what I’m hearing.

I particularly love that gorgeous theme that starts up near the end of the first clip (and I hope there is more of it). But overall, to me this sounds almost like Elmer’s equivalent of Looney Tunes: Back in Action. It’s like Gold’s Mad Mad World mixed with Carl Stalling but filtered through Elmer’s own style, with multiple callbacks to his own previous genre approaches. There are fun riffs including an almost Magnificent Seven sounding theme in the final cue… I look forward to hearing the whole thing!

Checked out the soundclips. I guess the Airplane! rules went right out the window. It's just as wacky as the Powell score (which I liked), but a little less overbearing. Definitely getting this.

Listening to the samples, I'm left scratching my head. Anyone have any intel on why Bernstein was replaced?

The movie appears to be spotted differently where you can figure out what cues match so I'm getting "bad movie is edited to shreds" and "replace the only thing you can replace" vibes more than something being wrong with Bernstein's score.

Or maybe Bernstein walked?

I find Bernstein and Powell's approaches to be so congruent (again based on the samples) I can't for a moment believe its a music quality or music fit issue.

Given the liner notes have participation from both Peter Bernstein and Bear McCreary (who helped Bernstein reconstruct Kings of the Sun around this time, as his active protege), I think that will have a lot of answers. I’m almost as excited to read the liner notes booklet as I am to listen to the album!

Music rarely gets replaced because of problems with the quality of the music. It's usually a rethink of the whole movie as you say or due to a sense from the studio that the film hasn't gelled the way they hoped it would. Music is that last thing they can change before the film gets released.

Listening to the samples (and assuming the samples are typical of the whole), I'm left scratching my head why anyone could get listening pleasure from this whoopee-cushion-mentality comedy music. We recently had more of the same from Goldsmith's "Legend That Walks Like a Man". Is circus clown music now in vogue? If so, maybe we should add "The Greatest Show on Earth" to Intrada's current Kickstarter re-recording poll.

Lol is the "Zip-i-dee-doo-da" vibes from the melody in the finale purposeful?

Either way, samples sound right up my ally. Oh well, good thing I'm in a good financial situation right now....

Legend That Walks Like a Man is by far my favorite of the four GE Theater scores.

Can't wait to hear what the music is like because from the samples Bernstein and Powell sounded on par with one another. It sounds like the studio made up its mind about Bernstein before he recorded a note.

Then why would he have recorded a note? They could have rejected it before he did, like what happened with Jerry Goldsmith at least twice during the last decade of his career...

Very good question. It sounds like they let Bernstein go so they could give Zucker and co a "see, told ya so moment."

But again it seems like Powell and Bernstein's cues were spotted differently just given the length so I think there was also an approach change with Powell.

I call studio interference there, too. I think its mildly telling that the Zuckers never really did much else after Rat Race.

The irony, as you know Yavar, is that Goldsmith was the original composer attached to this before he had to bow out due to his appendicitis (at least that's how it was reported at the time). I absolutely 100% cannot envision how Goldsmith would have done this successfully (and even then had an in-tact score when it was all over).

Actually this preview includes a page which does start going into why the score was rejected:

Seems to address your questions...

Anyone know why the score is so short? Don't know if Bernstein was fired before sessions were completed or if he was just writing around the songs. I'm sure the liner notes will shed light on this.

Very happy to order this, even if it's clearly not a lost masterwork. A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT remains my rejected Bernstein holy grail, it's the only prestige title not featured on Varese's superb collection of rejected Bernstein scores from '08.

Wow! If I had heard that main theme beforehand I would have included it in my last Elmer concert. And that waltz practically hits the heights Ernest Gold did in MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD. Elmer definitely passes the comedy test. That is, for ANY composer to write at all memorable music for a comedy. Of course Elmer did this many times over.
