I first connected with Gergly around 2005 through a James Bond forum (I can’t recall which one it was). He recommended lots of music and pointed me in the right direction for exploring more, at a time when it was slightly less easy than it is today. At one point he mailed me some CDs (from Hungary!) of unreleased recordings that I sadly misplaced over the years. I recall one CD was Hamlisch’s Spy Who Loved Me. Where he procured these things was a mystery—he had friends all over the world who would locate tapes. During his undergraduate studies we lost touch for awhile. I was surprised to know he was close to my age, because he totally came across more as a professor or scholar than a young man.

When Neumation Music was founded, he reached out and we reconnected. He finished his PhD wanted an outlet for writing and I invited him to collaborate. The first, and sadly only, book he completed an essay for was For Your Eyes Only. He began writing an essay for a forthcoming John Barry publication, but didn’t get to finish. Both will be dedicated to him. The amount of energy he poured into his projects was impressive. He truly, truly loved this music.

We occasionally chatted about his collection of vintage figure sketches and introduced me to vintage Hungarian advertising ephemera. He kindly offered to connect me with a number of estates and collectors who wanted music published. In recent months he had some major personal setbacks and became deeply depressed. I think the oppressive political environment in Hungary bothered him, though he seemed to always express his frustrations with rolled eyes and sarcasm.

Gergly was a true champion of film music and I am glad I knew him. His passing really sucks. Condolences to his loved ones in the EU and around the world.

I had no idea he was so young. Extremely intelligent person and a great researcher and writer. But above all that, he was a very kind person and a pleasure to know. Such very sad news. Condolences to his family and all of his friends. He was definitely "one of the good guys."

Incredibly sad news. His words graced most of Quartets releases. He was a scholar and engaging conversationalist in all forums. May He Rest in Peace.

Very sorry to hear this. 39 is of course a ridiculously early age to go. I never interacted with Gergely or "The Cat" personally (that I can remember, anyway), but I always wanted to get that TORN MUSIC book that everyone else seemed to own. Thanks for sharing these stories.

Very sad news. Based on a lot these comments, having not heard of the book before, I ordered it from Amazon. Looking forward to reading it when it arrives tomorrow.

Hi everyone,

I think I am the person who started to write about his passing to the internet. Please forgive me for my poor english and the delay for writing more about Gergely, but I am on holiday three days.
I have a very good friend who was in touch with him daily, I know everything from him (although once I was at Gergely, watching Broken Arrow with isolated score and signed his book Torn Music and some CDs).

So the truth is simple that he has hypertension for many-many years and that caused his death. I think that’s all I can say without the permission of his family. The only reason why I felt important to share this with you is that only after his death can I realise what he was for this “soundtrack lover” community.

I cannot say how uplifting to see that a compatriot (unfortunatelly the expression is very worn out Hungary’s present political enviroment) is being so missed for an international community..

So I think I can say in the name of his family, thank you for everyone for the kind words and memories. All I could do yesterday was listening QR’s Cinema Paradiso, one of my all time favourite music and movie.

And for the end. I ask everyone do not hesitate to see the doctor if you have serious illness…

Chris

Gergely also published a book this year about the music of Miklos Rozsa but it is in Hungarian. It is a very thorough and well written book.

I met him once and had a nice chat about his book, his teaching, his concert organizing plans and his work on CD liner notes. I was glad that a modest fellow Hungarian could be part of the film music world. I feel very sorry for his passing and my prayers are with his family.

I am so sorry to hear of Gergely's passing at such a young age as 39. We had exchanged a few e-mails over the years
and I very much enjoyed reading his book TORN MUSIC when it first was published and his various liner notes. Our international soundtrack-loving community has been deprived of a much-valued colleague and resource much too soon. Sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

Along with others, I was shocked and saddened by this news. It’s tragic to be struck down by illness at such a young age. I got to know him well when in 2008 we were both invited as representatives of the Miklos Rozsa Society to attend Tadlow’s recording sessions for El Cid in Prague over several days and warmly remember Gergely’s very pleasant personality and enthusiasm for the music. In numerous contacts since then he has always been most courteous and knowledgeable. Such a loss. Rest in peace Gergely.

I didn't know him but I certainly salute such a commitment dedicated to film music preservation and interest. This is not an age for a departure, when you have still so much to give, share and experiment. Deepest condoleances to family and friends.

I originally learned about Gergely Hubai via his blog and adjunct Twitter account, The Daily Film Music, where he wrote and shared scholarly articles—that belied his young age—up until 2012.

At one point a terrible misfortune befell him and he asked his readers for financial help. I gladly contributed because I enjoyed his writing so much.

Sadly, his older blog posts are now inaccessible. LiveJournal must have changed their plan terms to monetize more of their customers. Maybe that’s why he stopped posting. It would be nice if his articles could be recovered and stored with the Internet Archive. I’m going to get in touch with Jason Scott, archivist extraordinaire, to see what can be done.

After his blog went defunct and he stopped posting on Twitter, it was always a happy surprise to see Gergely appear again in liner notes and Facebook comments. His writing, especially on social media, was always droll and puckish. He had a penchant for replying to oft-asked questions with adroit sarcasm.

What a loss. Rest in peace, Gergely.

I communicated with Hubai off an on over a number of years, about rejected scores, always helping each other out. He was also cordial and friendly. Back when I really needed some money, he paid me to transcribe a number of audio interviews with composers and musicians. The last two or three years I could never get a reply back from him and just thought maybe he was too busy.

For those of us who don't use Facebook, do we know what the cause of death was?

For those of us who don't use Facebook, do we know what the cause of death was?

From what I have seen, Quartet Records' FB post didn't elaborate on that. Robin Esterhammer wrote a bit about the medical circumstances that preceded Gergely's death: https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=151722&forumID=1&archive=0

I read on one thread that he had high blood pressure and that it caused a ruptured aorta.
