Finally we got "that's nice, but what I really want..." post! ----------------- No, no, no...what I REALLY want is... VOLUNTEERS, A FEW DAYS AT WEASEL CREEK, THE HAND, THE DRESSER, ANGEL DUSTED, PK & THE KID...
I remember watching this film at the cinema, sometime back in 1981, titled MONSTER for Brits. It was in a Double Bill with WHEN A STRANGER CALLS (a usual practice to pair two low-budget horror films together at UK cinemas). It was silly/schlocky fun (with some gratuitous T&A that this teenager enjoyed), but not in the same class as the underrated (at the time) WHEN A STRANGER CALLS, which MOVED THE ENTIRE CINEMA with its ultimate shock/twist. Apart from the naked ladies, it was the Rob Bottin creature FX/gore and James Horner music that stood out (and playing spot the temp track...something that would continue when Christopher Young came out to play). Fun times. Not a favourite Horner, or classic, but I'll pick it up nonetheless.
...the Temp-Fu is heavy (Alien, Boys From Brazil....Patch of Blue!?). --------------- I recall ALIEN and BOYS FROM BRAZIL, plus JAWS (esp Night Search), but not PATCH OF BLUE, Sean. Maybe I missed that one...Hmmmmm
I love those early Horner sweet flourishes in the Main Titles and The Buck-O.

I want to credit Jeff Bond (or someone's note in the FSM print days) perhaps for citing BLUE. It's the cue 'Jerry & Peggy', but I'll have to revisit to be sure. I dint hear it either!
I'm playing the track Search For Clues right now and I can't decide if the Jerry spots are PAPILLON, WIND & THE LION, MASADA or PATTON (maybe it's all of them)
Deadly Blessing's notes stated Horner put his own money into his early Corman works for a better sound. .
I have a budget outline Horner wrote that indicated a sum of around $40,000 to record. I’ll need to double check—I think that was Humanoids, but it may have been Battle Beyond the Stars. Corman certainly didn’t put down that much money. Both scores were recorded in LA. Some of the musicians and the copyist were classmates from UCLA.
Perhaps a deliberate move from Horner to get into the spotlight?
"Some more attention for James Horner with our next CD release. And it’s a winner. His popular and oft-released score for Roger Corman’s grisly horror presentation, Humanoids From The Deep, comes to you from all-newly discovered master elements, allowing for a premiere presentation of the complete score in crisp and detailed sound! It’s at the beginning of Horner’s illustrious career, but remains one of his more popular freshman efforts. Complete contents and audio samples will be available here shortly. Dive in!" https://store.intrada.com/s.nl/sc.13/category.60330/.f

I thought I would refresh my memory and give it a spin. I had to smile when little bits of BBTS popped up.
I think it's safe to say, if we are getting an expanded HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP, then an expanded BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS might not be far behind.
BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS is indeed long awaited in any impoved, remastered and/or expanded or with alternates version. I am a "James Horner early years" completist and certainly not alone here.
Hope like you Kev that this will be the second Horner title from the upcoming list...but if it is BRAINSTORM this is even better of course.
Played a 35 minute version of the score this morning. I think it came with another score on the same CD but I separated it in iTunes. Surprised Horner played the music so "straight" for such a campy movie. Lots of quite suspenseful stuff if that floats your boat.

YES YES YES!
I would have thought an expanded BBTS would've came out before HOTD. Maybe there's issues in finding the masters?
Well..happy for all true Horner fans out there. For me this one is just too much of a temptracking score. But nevertheless a good adaptation and mash up of all the ones mentioned.
