I haven't heard Kamen's Saxophone Concerto for quite a while, nor have I heard most of the sound samples for VENOM so I don't know if anything that later turns up in the Sax Concerto is in the film score. But it's material that eventually turns up in the Guitar Concerto that is featured in the film's main title at least - not the Sax (at least as far as I remember).

The film provided several unintentional laughs and lots of scenery chewing by various artists. It's nice to see a previously unreleased score by Kamen being issued.

Amazing! Fantastic to find this score survived and sounds fab. Real treat for us Kamen fans. Great news, thank you Quartet! Although my postage is actually more than the cost of the CD. smile

So excited to have this one - a new, unreleased Kamen, joy!!
The film is a riot, you can sense the Kinski-Reed tension.
Yes, it's mostly a suspenser, but having an NPO 80's performance with Sid Sax at the helm - I've said it before, that band could play the hell outta anything, and are in fine form here. Instant order, and the lowest press this season I think at 1000 copies.

You might be right Simon, I'll have to check the film. Memory tells me it does use an upbeat take on the Adagio 2nd mvmt. from the Sax Concerto.

Wow - great batch from Quartet, will happily get them all! This is the winner for me though - I've been wanted this score for many decades. How exciting! Thank you Quartet -

Sounds like another Psycho sequel. Herrmann influence heard clearly at numerous points.
Try the clips of track 13 (at 13 seconds in) and track 24 (20 seconds in) for reminders of Anthony Perkins at work.

Quartet themselves refer to the Saxophone Concerto; they must know. But the main title music for VENOM certainly features the music that was eventually used for the Guitar Concerto (the third movement IIRC).

Not that it's that important; I'll be ordering this one I think smile

Certainly the most interesting CD from this Quartet batch. Totally unexpected.
Quartet is growing very fast on me as a soundtrack label and is now of the greatest.

Before I report back on the music (the CD arrived today) I must say I much prefer the inside (flipper) cover without the gun (snake in vent)...AND...
Susan George in Suzzies...Ho YES!!! (yum emoji).

The main title is derived from a ballet Kamen wrote in the 70s, and aspects of it are expressed in Venom as well as the sax and guitar concertos.

Turned up today and surprised how substantial this score is. Super quality source. Love hearing this version of the theme that previously was always the 3rd movement of the guitar concerto for most of us. The brooding slow burn score plays very well with typical Kamen histrionics making the music interesting. Some ideas here that turned up in the Dead Zone and Die Hard 2, which is fun to spot. A few bursts of action here and there too. Extras play well. Amazing to own this score after all this time. Thank you Quartet and all involved.

Dya know what I love about this CD.
You put it on, and within moments, whether you knew or not, it's unmistakable Michael Kamen.
His music just shines with his singular voice.
That's one of my most favourite things about score listening down the years.
That distinctive voice certain composers have that ties them to their music (largely a thing of the past these days).
And spotting his little Kamen easter eggs (for want of a better description).
Hearing The Dead Zone in track 2 had me grinning from ear to ear.
Oh, and it sounds friggin amazing.
Such fantastic clarity in the recording and mastering.
You could be in the studio.
Delightful stuff.

And...

Susan George in Suzzies!! smile

Wow, great post. (The rest too, I just saw no need to repeat it here.)
Glad to hear that, as I ordered VENOM in the hope to hear just that. I want to hear "Michael Kamen", not necessarily "snake attacks kidnappers and hostages".
What I respond to most in music (and in other arts too), is a singular, clear individual voice.
A composer's voice is like handwriting, it may change over years, may be bold and large or elegant and swift, but it’s always individual and distinct. That's the kind of music I respond to, which is why I always bought film scores more by composer than by movie.
