I haven't bought any Iwashiro in a while. I like what I have ( about 15 discs). Some that spring to mind- semishigure, Tidal Wave and a lovely one that has a blue cover with a white horse on it- I can't remember it's title in English.

Iwashiro is probably my favourite Japanese film composer and I would like to attend a concert of his sometime. His latest three albums from the last two years didn't really grab me however. Kinema no kamisama from 2021 is the last one I really liked.

@Simon
Thanks for reading! AZUMI is another one of my favourites, but alas he didn’t talk about it at the concert.

@Prince Damian
“a lovely one that has a blue cover with a white horse on it” - exactly how I refer to it! It’s for an NHK TV Taiga drama and something I definitely need to dust off for a revisit!

@keky
Although not officially announced yet, if you’re in Tokyo in late August next year, then… smile (it’s the second date that I mention in my review)

Bump!

Yesterday was the Japan premiere of Philip Glass’ MISHIMA CONCERTO FOR PIANO AND ORCHESTRA:

https://soundtracks-in-concert.com/100th-anniversary-of-the-birth-of-yukio-mishima-2024/

Also on the program was Toshiro Mayuzumi, who I really did not pay much attention to prior to this concert. Big mistake!

Thanks for reading,

Alain

Bump with a report on the recent World Soundtrack Awards in Belgium with Goldenthal, Rombi and Franglen on the program!

https://soundtracks-in-concert.com/world-soundtrack-awards-ceremony-concert-2024/

My report on the James Horner Tribute concert is coming soon too… I hope!

Cheers,

Alain

Thanks for the report, Alain! As a matter of fact I also attended the Ghent festival this year. It was my first and I must say it was an amazing experience!

At the Meet & Greet I was really surprised how approachable and friendly all the participating composers were. Talking with Natalie Holt and Carlos Rafael Rivera was just like talking with a pal of yours, I mean they were super friendly. But all the other composers were really, really nice. I had a short chat among others with Rombi, Goldenthal, Franglen and with the Baldenweg siblings whose score for In the Land of Saints and Sinners is one of my favourite recent scores. They are funny guys, too (Nora was sadly missing from the Meet & Greet but she was present at the composer talk event later).

The discussions at the Kinepolis I went to were also great and enlightening (the round table with the nominees, the one with Goldenthal and later with Sarah and Emily Horner, Horner's widow and daughter)

As for the concerts, what you wrote is true, the Rombi-Goldenthal concert was unforgettable, in my case, mostly because of Rombi's music but I have to admit I really enjoyed Goldenthal's music too, particularly the Finale from Titus and the suite from Alien3. But hearing Rombi's music live was a treat. The performance of "I'm dreaming of Home", I must admit, brought tears to my eyes...

I'm looking for your report on the Horner concert too, which was also good - but not great, in my opinion. My comments in the Horner concert topic.

Keky,

Glad you enjoyed the events! I was at all the ones you mentioned too - perhaps we crossed paths??

What I love about the Meet & Greet is that it’s so casual and the composers are happy to chat, sign covers and take photos.

I’m still in awe of the Rombi pieces performed… I just wish he had performed UN HOMME ET SON CHIEN. Maybe next time!

Anyway, my James Horner Tribute Concert report is now up:

Bump!

My review of Grusin, Ritenour and Ivan Lins at Blue Note Tokyo:

https://soundtracks-in-concert.com/lee-ritenour-dave-grusin-with-brasilian-friends-featuring-ivan-lins-2024/

Although mostly a showcase for jazz fusion and Brazilian music, Grusin always plays one piece of film music in his sets. This time it was RANDOM HEARTS.

Thanks for reading!

Following on from my report of the YOKO KANNO/COWBOY BEBOP set, here’s my report on the second set featuring Herbie Hancock, Terence Blanchard and friends:

No film music was played, but I still thought it was worthy to share since Hancock and Blanchard performed.

Coming up next: RANDY EDELMAN at Carnegie Hall… last night!

So Edelman seemed uninterested in scoring more movies? He has done several this year and has several coming up...

And Rob Cohen lives in Bali now?

Apologies for the late reply!

During the concert he didn’t mention anything at all about being uninterested in scoring more movies…

And yes, it seems Rob Cohen now lives in Bali!

Here’s my first annual round-up of all seventeen concerts I went to this year:

https://soundtracks-in-concert.com/2024-a-year-in-review/

LOST IN CONCERT was by far my favorite with the Goldsmith concert in Tokyo coming in second.

Thanks for reading and happy holidays to all!

The concert of the year for me was Robert Townson's extravaganza "Pictures at an Exhibition" at Disney Hall in Los Angeles, conducted by the legendary Leonard Slatkin -- still waiting for the CD to be released!

Sorry missed your post Dr Channing! It was quite the concert, wasn’t it? Still bummed that Bill Conti wasn’t in attendance…

There’s been a bit of activity related to images used in the concert on Thomas Peak’s Facebook lately - I wonder if it’s a sign?
