I've long possessed Nelson's "Baha Bossa" theme on the Skull Sessions album, that's the cue where Steve gives a rollicking dune buggy ride to Farrah Fawcett, and now comes another fantastic bionic theme on Death of a Gunfighter. We're making progress!
Great music as it stands, based on the samples. It could be an entree by the gents at LLL…with a Bionic main course on the way? Who knows? Just having a hopeful jest that TSMDM has been a work in progress that may appear soon…and this release is just the tip of the Oliver Nelson iceberg. Whatever the case, a great release of different music from a different-than-usual, under represented composer. Thank You LLL!
The soundsamples are just great..they have this cool vibe like the Goldsmith´s westerns. SKULLDUGGERY was always on my want list, for its bongo rythm and jungle vibe! Such an awesome release and after a long time of releases I wasn´t interested in, finally something "fresh"..even though, it´s an oldie
I wonder how LLL has presented the "complicated" Main Title... Time will tell.
It seems that the long Main Title music heard in the film is now more or less track 4 "Claire/Cottonwood Spring/Good Night Marshal" on the CD. On the other hand, what is called "Main Title" on the CD (you can listen to almost the complete cue on the LLL website) doesn´t appear at the beginning of the film directly after the Lena Horne song - maybe this track was originally planned as "Main Title" in the film, but was then removed.

Yes, Track 4 sounds like the Main Title proper - or Part 1 of it. The second part of the Main Title in the film comes in after a couple of dialogue exchanges, and that music in the film to me sounds like what on CD is Track 3 (called "Main Title"). So I think there's a switcharound, maybe to tie in better with the song which kicks off the CD (and score... although in the film it's after "Emblem").

At first I had also thought about such a switcharound, but if you listen closely it is not the case. What you calll Part 2 of the film´s Main Title is the "Good Night Marshal" scene at the end of the film´s Main Title credits when Widmark leaves the sheriff´s office and mounts his horse. So this will probably be the end part of track 4 on the CD which has just this title: "Good Night Marshal". The theme there is indeed the same as for the "Main Title" track 3 on the CD, but the instrumentation is slightly different. Therefore it is not the same track although it is very similar.
If there is any possibility at all of a release of music from THE SIX-MILLION DOLLAR MAN, let it be known that I am also ready to hand my money over for such a thing.
The only reason I haven't commented "But what about The Six-Million Dollar Man?" so far is because I hate spoiling threads that celebrate new releases with snubbing "But what about?" posts.
However, as that topic has come up elegantly and organically, then, especially with the revelation that LLL would like to do that project, I want to put my hand up and join the chorus that says, "YES!"
And it detracts not one notch from my joy at this release and me looking forward to playing it much.
Of course, Nelson was arranger (not composer) on Last Tango in Paris.
For anyone interested, the helpful Stephen Woolston has kindly removed "also contains Skullduggery" from LLL's front cover:
And raferjanders in the Custom Cover Art thread has also provided his own couple of takes on Death of a Gunfighter, as well as a great cover for Skullduggery (which didn't get a flip cover on this):
Oh man these will be nice in my iTunes, when I split the CD into two albums...
Death of a Gunfighter/Skullduggery represents the first soundtrack era (late Sixties) of Oliver Nelson under the supervision of Stanley Wilson. It is the subtle and romantic era.
The second era (early Seventies) is under Hal Mooney that we all refer to by default. It is the groovy funky sound era that you find in the Silverton Productions (The Alpha Caper, Money to Burn, The Six Million Dollar Man) and the action-adventure cop series Chase (1973).
This just arrived and I've been playing it all day... INCREDIBLE music! Can't believe this release happened -- truly thankful. Still digging in but both these scores are just so rich. Anyone here been listening?
Does anyone know if this release will be made available as a digital download? Most of the other titles seem to have been at some point, but maybe there's a delay in order to maximise CD sales?
I wonder if this series will ever include '60s titles like Costa's Madigan and Schifrin's Blindfold, as well as more obscure ones like Ernie Freeman's The Pink Jungle and Ralph Ferraro's The King's Pirate?

I totally second these titles as much desired unreleased scores...I would buy them all for sure.
I'll second that one. Somehow this came up -- completely unrelated -- in an FSM search two or three weeks ago, so I went to hunt down and hear the score. Every load was poor quality of the remake TV movie, but still a good score.

Hey Slackattack, glad you're enjoying it! Mine will take a bit of time to arrive, but I hope this thread doesn't go dead in the meantime. My brother's in Scotland, and his copy is floating around customs, but if he gets his before I get mine, I'll post HIS thoughts here (as opposed to "Yes, but what about...?").
