Hi David!

The Cinema-kan set (I think) has improved audio, and it also has unreleased outtakes and alternative tracks for each score. Also, if you don't have the old Bandai double disc that contained the scores from the other 2 "Yokai" movies "100 Ghost Stories" and "Along the Tokaido Road with Ghosts," the Cinema-kan is a must have (and the CK release has unreleased cuts from those films). It also has amazing packaging with a beautiful full color booklet with photos from all three of the films. I also noticed its been going for a lot even in Japan, and I think the same is true for the Cinema-Kan Daimajin box. So pick one up if you can!

Thanks for the info. There is a re seller via Discogs but they don’t ship to Canada. Thankfully I did jump on the DaiMajin set years ago as that’s my fave kaiju movie and I love Ifukube’s score for the trilogy.

Hi David! You can get a set on Yahoo Auctions Japan "Buy It Now" for 10000 yen (around $65.00 usd). You can use a proxy buying service like "From Japan" (who I use and highly recommend) https://www.fromjapan.co.jp/en/
In the end with shipping it will still come out to probably $110-120 USD, but it seems that it would still be cheaper than getting it on Discogs where the cheapest one is around $153 USD + postage. Here's a link to the auction:

Thank you Eric! I picked it up using Buyee (I couldn’t get the other one to find this auction item unfortunately). I used PayPal so I’m covered if anything goes sideways. I cannot recall if you recommended the Yokai score on another thread but ever since I heard Spook Warfare I’ve been obsessed with Ikeno’s music. I also bought the movie on Google which I rather like. I didn’t care for the other 2 movies from the trilogy but Spook Warfare is just a cool weird movie.

Sorry Eric, I mixed up Advise and Consent's response to your post. Much appreciated for the head's up. It only cost me $100 CAD (before shipping) but that's way better than the $367 someone on eBay is listing it for. Figures that is worth more than the DaiMajin CinemaKan set which I did pick up in 2015 or whenever...

The Cinema-kan Daimajin and Yokai sets are out-of-print, hence the high prices. This is actually a common occurrence when a Cinema-kan release goes out-of-print.

True. I acquired quite a number of them and - thankfully - before they went OOP. They go for astronomical prices otherwise to the point that I've given up on trying to get a copy of this one.

A&C, did you ever pick up the TOHO SFX Champion Festival 10-CD box set I kept harping on to you about? It includes Manabe's vampire trilogy scores along with a bunch of other priceless gems (most if not all of which have been released individually over the years). Granted, the sound quality probably isn't as good as the more recent Cinema-kan releases of those scores (which I never picked up) but good enough for my ears.

https://www.tohokingdom.com/cd/toho_champion_vap.htm

The set was surprisingly cheap (about $120) and available for many years but now appears to be out of print. I bet a reasonably price copy could be found somewhere, though...

In fact, Ark Square currently has it listed for about double the original price tag, but as I've unfortunately discovered with many other titles on their site, it doesn't guarantee they actually have it in stock.

https://arksquare.net/detail.php?cdno=VPCD-81382

Edit: Surprisingly, the indispensible "sister set" of the Toho SFX Champion Festival box IS still available, a 6-CD set called Tsuburaya Production Early Days Chronicle, featuring music from various vintage tokusatsu TV series.

https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/VPCD-81334

(Also at Ark Square but almost double the price CDJapan has it listed for: https://arksquare.net/detail.php?cdno=VPCD-81334)

Oh man, that one is still a favorite of mine from Cinema-kan.

It's weird because two of Cinema-kan's earliest releases "Massacre Gun" and "Youth of Beast" seemingly came back into print a little while ago (?). Unfortunately I held off on getting "Blue Christmas" but thankfully I have the Toho Matsuri Box that Josh mentioned which has the complete score (although the Cinema-kan version does have a bunch of bonus and alternative tracks). Also, if I remember correctly the Toho Matsuri Box versions of the "Vampire" scores are complete scores unlike the Cinema-kan single disc which is sort of a "best of" the series. I think the Cinema-kan rerelease of "Branded to Kill" is out now which is great for those that missed out on the Think/Disc Union paper sleeve version that came out many years ago.

Yes. I purchased the box - cheap and brand new - on amazon.co.jp back in 2018. Eternally grateful that I did considering the YUGE™ amount of material contained therein.

Thanks again Eric for the find on Yahoo Auctions. The CD set is on its way to me now. I wasn't aware that it was wrapped (never opened) so this is a real win! Cannot wait to hear more of Ikeno's Spook Warfare!

Hi David!

No problem! I'm addicted to buying stuff on Yahoo Auctions Japan. I found some of the rarest Japanese releases on there not to mention cool Japanese movie posters and other stuff (Google translate can be your best friend)

Ikeno is awesome composer.
With Yasushi Akutagawa, Taichiro Kosugi (Cyborg 009), Toshiaki Tsushima, Tohru Fuyuki & Hiroshi Tsutsui he belongs amongst my favorite Japanese "Golden Age" composers.

P.S. You can check this great label with lot old school anime & TV series soundtracks.

the Yokai Trilogy Cinemakan disc set arrived today and it was brand new! The sound is much better than the other release and I am glad I was able to get this CD set. Ripped and now sitting on my HD so I can keep the CDs in good shape (like my DaiMajin set from Cinemakan). smile

Thanks again Eric for the find on JPN Yahoo Auctions.
