Today I’ll say The Birdman of Alcatraz, but it is indeed very difficult to keep it to one. Yavar

Which is yours? I dare you to choose only one. So many great scores... how to pick only one? The obvious choices, as these are both personal favorites but also timeless classics; The Magnificent 7 To Kill A Mockingbird The less obvious choices, but personal favorites nevertheless: The Grifters Saturn 3 But you dared to pick one, and my Elmer Bernstein pick of the day (as I could easily choose another one another day): The Scalphunters Of all the Western scores Bernstein has written, this is probably his sunniest, most joyful one. Incredibly infectious main theme.

All terrific. Let's not forget Far From Heaven, absolutely perfect for the film it was in. And of course Airplane! - Bernstein really got what ZAZ were trying to do.

The Magnificent Seven. It's his first soundtrack I heard, and I like it the most. This. Despite the fact it's his most well-known score, it's still streets ahead. It gives the film an energy and I'm not embarrassed to pick it. Not just one famous theme, its all good, the bandit theme, el toro, the fiesta, all knitted together. Classic score, it was the daddy, and many of his other westerns after were ordered facsimiles and never quite had the same unique power as 7.

It is a classic.

Elmer Bernstein remains my 2nd favourite film score composer and so there are many scores from which to choose #1.

GHOSTBUSTERS, only because Dana's Theme sounds quite similar to the love theme from THE MAN WITH ONE RED SHOE.

I reckon that examples would have been helpful. Well, better late than never. Highlights of SPIES LIKE US: 1 - The Ace Tomato Company - thirds the way through the Main Titles are a very exciting 2 minutes. To hear it, you would think that something really, really exciting is going on. No. Just very slow moving deliveries going on at The Ace Tomato Company. 2 - Halfway though Off to Spy - A theme so energetic and exciting that it wouldn't be out of place on the vastness of the frontier OR the Steppes. 3 - Russians in the Desert -Mr. Bernstein in Lawrence of Arabia mode. Exquisite. 5 - Escape - Middle eastern tinged action cue. 6 - Road to Russia - wonderful travelogue with a clin d’oeil to The Great Escape. 9 - W.A.M.P. - an ode to American technological wizardy. Awe inspiring moment. 13 - Winners - rousing recap of the great outdoors, Western or Steppes. And much, much more. Of course, these highlights just scratch the surface of the artistry and wit of Mr. Elmer Bernstein.
