One of my very fave JB scores. I have the Rykodisc version, but this seems like a definitive release. Quartet know what they're doing. Their attention to detail is exemplary.

Easy buy!

Just purchased this.

I feel like Quartet is the preserver of John Barry material that is not as high profile as the Bonds, Out of Africa, Somewhere in Time, and so on. Not that other labels haven't released their share, but Quartet really needs to be commended.

Great, just ordered (I only have the Rykodisc, so I'm sure I'll notice the difference in sound quality). The p&p is a lot, but it always is these days, & the delivery from Quartet is very fast. Every year now, as it comes to an end, I think, is this the first year that I don't import any soundtracks? I thought that was last year, but then Moonraker turned up to save the day. Well this year is now taken care of & I hope for one or two other orders.

The last time I ordered something from Quartet, my password didn't work, so I set a new one & noted it in my little password book...& the new one didn't work (& of course I tried the old one again), so another new one has been set, it'll be interesting if that works for the next order (& if it doesn't, it's no big deal to set a new one).

I'm sure this release will sound pretty good, but I've never had any issue with the Rykodisc. I listened to it not that long ago in fact, and it sounds fine to me. I often find that not every previous release of a score sounds as bad as some people seem to suggest when a new release is announced.

Yes, but for a layout of 39.45 euros, I'm bloody well going to notice a huge difference big grin

I didn't know about the Michael Crawford vocal, he does sound a wee bit flat in the snippet , I think his singing got better over the years.

This may not sound important but the original LP of The Knack by John Barry has a tape transfer sound on the track titled “Three On A Bed”. It is also audible on the Quartet reissue released a decade ago and this makes me think that this was most likely part of the mix-down process. I am surprised that the session tapes for the album recordings exist so it will be interesting to hear if that is part of it. Sorry for the unnecessary information but analog technology back in the 1960s can be so interesting!

Doesn’t appear to be a limited edition….or did I miss reading something (which is possible)?

“Three On A Bed” is a masterpiece of a track.

Funny, I too seem to recall reading it was limited when it was first posted , but now I don’t see that.

..& it's arrived! That's pretty good going, I ordered it on Tuesday afternoon & it arrived on Thursday morning (from Spain to the UK). It's the usual bang up job from Quartet, with a lovely thick booklet to read. In fact it preceded Gracenotes & I had to put in the info myself when I ripped it, no big deal, I usually change the info a bit anyway (a tip, you do that before the rip the CD).

I, too, was sure I had read originally that this release was a limited edition but can't seem to find where I read it now!

Okay so it’s not just me. Didn’t it originally say limited to 500? My reaction was that at such a low number for a Barry score to place my order as soon as possible.

We have never advertised this album as being limited to a specific number of copies anywhere. It will be available as long as there is enough interest, but once the first run is sold, we cannot be sure when it will be reprinted.

How do the tracks from the film version sound ? Orchestrated about the same as the album tracks just different lengths ? I honestly can’t remember seeing the movie. I know Quartet always does a great job I am just curious.

The film tracks have a different sound.

The percussion has a different timbre. In the film version of Doors and Bikes and Things, it has a lower pitch.

There are also slight timing differences.

The brass mixed slightly differently in the film version of the main title.

Alan Haven's organ playing is very different on both.

The album has tracks not found in the film. The film has tracks not found on the album.

The sound of the film tracks is definitely archival not audiophile, but I'm amazed at what Chris Malone has done. You would have to listen very closely to detect it was an M&E track. Without listening closely you'd assume it was a mono pure music track.

It is well worth it.

I'd love things like The Chase and Born Free to get similar treatments in the future.

Cheers
