Come to think of it, does DR. STRANGELOVE have a score?

Yes, it does have a score.

Also, if i remember correctly, there are some (one or two) brief cues of dramatic underscore in Rear Window.

You need to drop REAR WINDOW (which has original music by Franz Waxman) and LIFEBOAT (which has original music by Hugo Friedhofer) from your list.

If you're looking for a major Hollywood movie which has no music whatsoever, not even in the main and end titles, the only one I can think of is MGM's 1954 Robert Wise production of EXECUTIVE SUITE.

The Hill - no music at all (including main and end titles).

The only reason FORBIDDEN PLANET's score was not referred to as music was because Louis and Bebe Barrons were not union members. The term "electronic tonalaties" was cooked up to avoid union problems.

I thought DEFIANT ONES did have a little bit of score, but it has been a few years since I've watched the movie.

Also came across this film and trivia:

"Day of the woman" (1978)
The film has no music score. Director Meir Zarchi intended to add some library music to his film, but found none that was suitable, so the only music we hear in the film comes from the church organ, a snatch of Puccini on record, background music in the store and a few stray riffs from Johnny's harmonica.

"Consipiracy" (2001 TV Film) HBO Pictures
Apart from the record Eichmann plays at the end there is no music in the entire film.

"Kiss Or Kill" (1997)

"One Of Our Aircraft is Missing" (1942)

"Scum" (1979)
This film has no musical score.

"The Panic In Needle Park" (1971)
There is no music in this movie whatsover.

Interestingly, my IMdbPro Advanced Title search uncovered NONE of the films we all discussed in this thread. I tried many different intelligent searches. Wierd.

No, REAR WINDOW has an on-location composer working on a score in one of the apartments nearby. There is no dramatic score.

And yes, movies with Main Titles and End Credits music are fine as they are not meant to be dramatic underscore.

The pathetic MAROONED (1969) doesn't have any music, I believe, except for an annoying hum in the space sequences.

Network and Dog Day Afternoon. Dog Day has one opening credits song, Network has nothing except for the theme of 'The Howard Beal Show'.

You're absolutely right about Dog Day. I should have remembered that. It was a favorite film of mine for awhile.

Peter Bogdanovich's TARGETS (1968) has no dramatic underscore.

Also, MGM's Tarzan series that ran from 1932 to 1942 had no scores other than main and end titles, relying instead on the sounds of birds and jungle wildlife to supply a kind of "musical" ambience.

TARZAN THE APE MAN
TARZAN AND HIS MATE
TARZAN ESCAPES
TARZAN FINDS A SON!
TARZAN'S SECRET TREASURE
TARZAN'S NEW YORK ADVENTURE (the only title that can't be counted since it contains a single cue to underscore a travel montage)

I bring this up whenever a thread like this appears--of all the films on the list, MAROONED is one that is in dire need of a real score and might just be brought to life with a good tense one.

As "American Graffiti" was wall-to-wall pop tunes, did it have a separate score?

A song-score is still a score, isn't it?

SEX, LIES AND VIDEOTAPE does have a score by Cliff Martinez.

DAY OF THE WOMAN is the same movie as I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE!... it was given a more lurid title and ad campaign when released by Jerry Gross in the early 80's.

There is a Tony Richardson film called MADEMOISELLE, with Jeanne Moreau in the mid 60's that has no music score... I remember it being specifically cited in an interview with Bernard Herrmann.

It Happened One Night - just has main title music - the rest is source.

I think this is probably true for a lot of films from the early 30s - Dracula and The Mummy also come to mind.
