Joe:

>>to be honest, I don't have as much musical background or education as many others here, nor do I have nearly as extensive or varied a score library, so I simply don't feel qualified to add my opinion to the others, but I'll do it eventually anyway<<

Please do. From what I have gathered from your writings, you are indeed qualified for rational debate. I have been impressed by your insight and willingness to pursue discussion. Not to mention your healthy, humble attitude.

As for musical illiteracy, well join the club! I am a complete moron when it comes to technical terms, so I try the best I can to hide my ignorance behind quasi-technical adjectives. Some times it works, some times, it doesn't. But it never stopped me from participating! http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/smile.gif">

PS: Guys, I'd settle for some left-overs from that dinner of yours.

Thor, your compilation/tribute is not immune from leaving me with a tinge of regret. I mean 15 years ago I'm sitting around talking to a local sports reporter who is aghast that I didn't keep articles about my ball teams. He spurred me on to hit their archives and gather the stories into a scrapbook. Little did I know beforehand but afterwards I had in my possession the whole scope of something that I could no longer give scant attention. And of course it's nice to have that scrapbook around many years later as a fun keepsake.

The point is that I had already forgotten the tenor of that "Important Music" thread but when I clicked onto it and found myself reading the goshdarned thing--well, when I was done I could only sit back and marvel. We really got into it there! And the other night it spurred me on to put on the A Summer Place tape for another 45 minute session of listening to its purely melodic score. Anyway, I now regret not having kept every single thread when I had "really gotten into it." Only a fool doesn't invest 3 years worth of time & effort into the writing game and doesn't keep stuff that could prove very useful again down the road, specifically when old topics are resurrected in some form or another. I cringe when I think of the great discussion that evolved over Empire Of The Sun, a thread that is now forever lost, as well as a simple thread about Saving Private Ryan that took off between Ware, Swashbuckler and I into analytical stratosphere. It's gone forever as well.

By my own definition, I am a fool. Maybe this should have been emailed. Let it serve as warning. I feel like the guy who was awakened by the fire detector, ran outside and then watched all his manuscripts go up in smoke. Crap.

That's a valid point and useful warning, Howard. I must remember to copy the contents of my "favourite threads" onto separate pages, should the current board go through another "facelift" in the future.

If there are other current threads that YOU (or anyone else, for that matter) would like to see "preserved" on my site, then you must let me know before that happens.

Your scrapbook analogy is good. In many ways, I think the threads I mentioned represent a broad view of the sentiments, personalities, moods and intellectual scope that the FSM board contains. As such, it works like a retrospective oddysey not only through the board's PRESENT history, but also slightly encompassing the sentiments, opinions and personalities that were present on PREVIOUS incarnations of the board.

So while those threads you mention are indeed and sadly lost, many of their sentiments are still present in different guises.

I think.

Well, sure, those threads I listed on that page were absolutely great! Shame I've lost the old website data and pages in various computer updates and harddrive crashes over the years. Those were the kind of threads you don't really see anymore. However, you can still find the page in question here:

https://web.archive.org/web/20050215103135/http://www.celluloidtunes.com/fsm.htm

If the question, however, is if I feel the same about the board TODAY, in terms of atmosphere and discussion climate, the answer is a resounding "NO".

Whoa, this thread is over two decades old... amazing. FSM Messageboard archaeology & preservation should become a field of study.

Strangely enough, the FSM board now tells me this thread was initiated by Wedge, even though it was Thor (and the board mentioned Thor as initiator just a few minutes ago).

Yes, I've seen that happen once or twice before, for ressurected threads of this age.

Wow, Thor, you're writing celluloidtunes.net now in Japanese? Impressive.

Ha, ha....yes, both celluloidtunes.com (which was the first) and celluloidtunes.net were subsequently taken by Asian companies when I failed to renew the subscriptions. I think one of them is a slot machine site. Which is weird, because there is nothing in the very film music-specific name 'celluloid tunes' that denotes gambling. Thankfully, celluloidtunes.no -- the current, proper address -- lives on, and will do for as long as I have the energy and money.

The album version opens with "Wedge" while the proper film version opens with "Thor." As usual, Thor prefers the former.

Hey Thor!

It was really cool reading all of this again.

Somehow I have nostalgic feelings because it reminds me of the beginning of FSM and this forum.

Thanks for saving it.

Best wishes from Germany!

El Aurence (formerly "hemant").

Now to the question:

Why is the answer a resounding "NO"?

Have things changed so much for you?

LOL! Now it all makes sense.

Yes. The very discussion climate has changed radically -- the way people talk to each other, plus the topics that people are interested in. Once in a while, there is still some old-school stuff here, but they are few and far between.
