Interestingly, Paul Glass ("Lady In A Cage") lived with Friedhofer in an apartment for a few years.

Oh man 14 years later & we’re still trailing after each other, Dana old sport. At least it’s on good ground!

from Music By MAX STEINER

“In all of Hollywood, no one moved between composition and orchestrating for others with less ego than Hugo Friedhofer.” —author Steven C. Smith

“‘If he’s good enough for Korngold, he’s good enough for me.’” —Max Steiner

“‘...the most learned of us

Certainly a composer I have long appreciated.

Friedhofer was the composer that got me hooked on film music and it all started with "One Eyed Jacks" and I was impressed with the World Premiere Recording of "The Best Years Of Our Lives" and both the film and score are absolute treasures. I'm still waiting for that long overdue World Premiere Recording of "Joan Of Arc" and a C.D. release of "The Secret Invasion".

What else have we got to do?

I happened to see the obscure 1949 film BRIDE OF VENGEANCE, a Mitchel Leisen film about the Borgias with a great period score by Friedhofer. It makes an interesting companion piece to Newman's PRINCE OF FOXES.

Side note: Leisen is co-credited with costume design for BRIDE, a rare instance of a director collaborating on costumes (Orson Welles' MACBETH may be another example.)

ENCHANTMENT is another wonderful Friedhofer score.

Just watched The Young Lions a few days ago ,a score I first digested through VTTBOTS a composer with a gift for melody and understatement

Thank you all for your interest in Hugo Friedhofer and the information shared. I have collected a good deal of biographical information about my cousin and am willing to share what I have. Any information that might come my way also would be greatly appreciated.

If truly a cousin (the internet...we must suss everything, right!?)...Hugo was absolutely brilliant. I was playing his 1959 score of The Young Lions today. Such intelligent writing, yet accessible. He managed the impossible feat of intelligence & accessibility. I hope the long requested Joan of Arc, sees a recording before I'm RIP....

I remember reading of how great he was in 1993 in FSM print. The way his writing was described, intrigued me. I instantly heard the brilliance, at 17 (?!).

May his work live on forever!

Before I kick the bucket I also hope to see a new recording of JOAN OF ARC. Are you listening Intrada ?

You might be interested to know that since your cousin was from San Francisco, "In Love And War" had another San Franciscan who starred in the film: Bradford Dillman.

Second cousin twice-removed! I'm one of the last three Friedhofers (direct male descendants) of our common ancestor Johann Gottfried Friedhofer who arrived in the US from Baden-Württemberg in 1851. I never met Hugo because he died in 1981 a month before I graduated HS. I had hoped to visit him after I got my music degree but fate intervened. I have had the privilege of talking with a few who knew him. Though I did not make music my profesison after getting my degree, I still compose for my own enjoyment and sing in a major symphony chorus. I am so pleased that so many still remember and appreciate Hugo.

When you talk about Friedhofer's versatility, think of this: the first of his music I ever heard was in the underscore to episodes of I SPY. Without seeing the credit, you would think you were hearing Earle Hagen's work.

I have very few of his scores, but I would certainly like to hear (and have) more.

And Hagen orchestrated Friedhofer's score for "The Young Lions", conducted his episode scores for "I Spy" and the score for the television film "The Over The Hill Gang".

Welcome Jim! You'll find many of us love Hugo's music (whilst griping for more cd representation).

I remembered how I was sold on Hugo....as Max Steiner's sense of drama, with Alex North-Ian restraint. One of the greats, HF.

The sole orchestrator credit in the opening titles of "The Young Lions" is for Edward B. Powell. Only in the booklet/liner notes of Intrada's 2-disc set of this Friedhofer master-work is Earle Hagen (along with Arthur Morton) mentioned for "additional orchestrations".

Hugo indeed had deep San Francisco roots. His grandfather Paul and great uncle August came out in a covered wagon in the 1850's. Hugo was born before the Great Earthquake but missed it because his mother Eva had taken him to Germany on an extended trip.

As good a place to send some love & 'where are you Mandalay??' for his rescue, in cooperation with Intrada, to rescue a late HF piece, Die, Sister Die.
Very cool backstory how that fine piece came to exist on cd, and like everything he wrote, a welcome addition to the Friedhofer catalogue. Highly intelligent writing for potboiler horror. Bliss.
