Witness protection program, but I am not allowed to discuss this publicly. big grin

Actually, this thread fell right into my self imposed hiatus from the Film Score Monthly Message board in 2005 (which lasted roughly until 2014 or so). In that time I did not visit this board or posted here, apart from maybe one or two times when I stopped by, for example when FSM stopped producing CDs. I actually curbed a lot of my other Internet posting activity back then too and focused on other things.

Please feel free to consult my discography, I can humbly say it's the first one where you can see in one single page, ALL the albums where John Williams performs, as a conductor and as an instrumentist. It also contains all of his collaborations with other artists.

If you look for the part of his career when "Johnny Williams" was a jazz pianist, you will find many interresting entries, also on Fresh Sound Records, among others!

JW also arranged the album "Manne..That's Gershwin" for Shelly Manne. It's a great album and deserves a CD release. There's a nice set titled "John Williams Jazz Beginnings" with his quartet, septet, octet, some solo performances and orchestra featuring Johnny Desmond. It's on Fresh Sound Records jazz city series, FSR 2228.
There's an interview with pianist Roger Williams on youtube telling the story as to why JW is credited as John Towner. They both were on the Kapp Records, Roger Williams was their best selling artist at the time, and Kapp didn't want people to think they were related.

May I suggest the 2002 re-recording of this album made by Steve Houghton Quintet "The Manne We Love: Gershwin Revisited". It's available to purchase online.

Uhm....yes, that's kinda what this thread is about. smile

I've also heard stories that the reason is he didn't want to be confused with his FATHER or the pianist John Thomas Williams.

Has "The John Towner Touch" ever been reissued? Being that it was on Kapp, I'm guessing that the masters were lost in the Universal fire.

You would think this would have been reissued by now.

Not in and of itself, no. Not that I'm aware of, anyway. The closest is this JAZZ BEGINNINGS set, which has the album tracks contained within.
