This is one of Williams' finest. It's an incredibly moving composition, and when it's combined with some of Oliver Stone's emotional imagery, it's WaterWorks Central. The lengthy opening credit sequence alone is worthy of a tear or two or at least a trembling bottom lip (e.g. the slowmo sequence when little Ronnie hits the ball and his dad is jumping up and down cheering him on; or how 'bout little Ronnie watching the veterans flinch at the fireworks?). Also, the simple trumpet theme used throughout the film punctuates moments of drama or transition beautifully because it has a tangible sense of desperation and longing.
I would love to acquire the complete motion picture score. I had the cassette with mostly "pop songs" when I was a teen, but the score tracks, to this day, I can still hear loud and clear...
EDIT: Whoops! Never mind my inquiry in re: to The July Records JCD-890407 release ;-)

The expanded boot is absolutely horrible, mind you, both sound quality and as a listening experience. Avoid it is my advice!

Yeah, I didn't realize it was a bootie until J told me to put my goggles on. That's what I get for not wearing them glasses *^_^*
I do hope that some day the complete score is released, though. It'd be a shame if it was not.

I love this score. The Motion Picture Soundtrack Album is pretty good though, until the complete score is released.
What you get on an expanded version is either a) some more versions of the patriotic Americana theme or b) LOTS more of that dissonant, creepy texture. That's basically it. It really doesn't add anything beyond the perfect representation that is already on the commercial CD. In fact, it "kills" some of my appreciation of this score. But hey, that's just me.
My copy arrived today, and I love it! BTW, where is the originator of this thread, our good friend Alex?We haven't heard from him in awhile.
I'm right here Henry! I've been quite busy at college - hopefully i'll have some free time to treat you all with some of my Barry threads .
Alex
I'm glad you're ok! How is college going? A lot has happened since you were last here, Williams has surpassed Conti to become my favorite composer, and STEVENJ was one of the first to get his Varese shipping notice!I look forward to your Barry threads, I enjoy them.

College is fine - i'm finally done for the year. I can't believe Williams is now your favorite! Could it be that you're listening to his music more than Conti? I have periods when I listen to other composers' music more than Barry (right now i'm in a Ken Thorne and Bernard Herrmann fever) but it doesn't mean Barry isn't my favorite. Are you sure? Whatever the case, Williams is one of my favorites .

Actually Williams used to be my favorite up until around 1996 when I started getting into Conti music seriously. The last couple of months however, I started listening to Williams again with the Indiana Jones set. I've been rediscovering his music, and was reminded how much I love it. I still love Conti music, but I really think Williams is now my favorite again.
This is a phenomenal score by Williams. I'm honestly surprised that none of the labels have issued an expanded re-release of it yet (Here's hoping...). Is there some reason why that isn't likely?
It's only a matter of time that a NEW expanded release will be with us! Another CLASSIC from Mr Williams!
I'm listening to this again tonight... what a beautiful, heartbreaking score. If any label producers are out there please consider putting out an expanded score release; there's much more to this score than the brief selections on the commercial release.
I have the original MCA CD and it sounds just awful, and i mean awful, almost like a bad boot itself. And there's a constant tinnitus-like high-pitched sound in the background!
So yes, definitely overdue for a remaster, as badly as it gets.
