TOTAL RECALL
I have the rough cut of this movie on VHS Tape and the music is temporary
but to suggest that Verhoeven would replace Jerry's music is ridiculous
Jerry and Paul got on very well together and Verhoeven always spoke his mind even to Jerry, if he did not like a cue.

so
what do u say merlyn?
where can i have this tape from?

Dude, you are so full of it.
believe me every while i'm scavenging the internet looking for it smile

I have no doubt there is a workprint of the film with alternate music, but darkgabeman's Verhoven story just doesn't fly. At which point did Elvis walk into the room holding bigfoot's hand?

I have seen bigfoot too....he sat in his cave listening to Elvis singing Tutti Frutti...

I guess this must be true then (i.m.o darkgabeman is full of schize...)

To end this...There is NO official alternative score edited movie of Total Recall (only the workprint) I should know as I´m the biggest fan of this movie out there wink

how can i have this tape?

The tape was given to me some years ago - it is not a commercial VHS
it is a rough work print of the film - that contains some of Jerry score
especially End of a dream sequence before the special effects took over
there are no proper credits either
and I am sorry I do not know where you could get this now

This is not a bootleg it is an official tape - although not a commercial (and in my private Goldsmith collection) and it will never be copied by me for anyone

There is noneother official version than the "official version" which has Goldsmith music in it...
A roughcut is as it says a roughcut a.k.a a workprint, and a workprint is not an official version...
official=final and finished version for the public,
not a WORK IN PROGRESS!!!

of course and i respect that
no one here want to break the rules
but as a fan of both Goldsmith and Horner work i like to own such rare copy
there must be a legal way to let us watch that copy

in my opinion there is no harm to share non-commercial products if there is no way to buy it somewhere else

Hey Merlyn,

Just wondered if your stance had changed at all on this? I appreciate you not wanting to circulate a bootleg but I think that the vast majority of people would not be interested anyway, and would prefer to watch the official release.

However this would be a goldmine to die hard fans of the movie. In addition to the score there could be all kinds of new or alternate footage, that no one has seen before.

The multiple releases there have been so far on blu ray and DVD all lacked any deleted scenes or additional footage so it looks like we would never get an official release. You might be the only person that has this.

Many thanks

I remember reporting about CLIFFHANGER being tracked with Basic Instinct and Predator 2 in the old print issues of early FSM magazine when I came across a temp tarcked version on video back in the 90's. So Iam not surprised.

This is a very silly thread. There is no "other score," just a rough cut of the film with a temporary score from other films. It's just how films are made -- a step in the process. There is no "legal way" to see this; it was never meant for public consumption.

I don't think it's a silly thread at all! There are lots of people out there like myself who collect workprints. The score aside a workprint can and often does have all sorts of alternate and additional footage.

Amer mentioned Cliffhanger above, well the workprint of Cliffhanger runs around 20 minutes longer than the DVD version and has numerous exclusive scenes, that have never been shown outside of the workprint.

As a massive fan of Total Recall I would do anything to see alternate/extra footage. If Merlyn still has a copy of the workprint and would be willing to let people like myself see it I would be eternally grateful!

Back to the score though, I have lots of old workprints and quite a lot of them have these temp scores. It's normally a combination of the music from die hard, aliens, terminator - even home alone and indiana jones. There are also some that have no score at all.

But as I say it's not the score that interests me as much with Total Recall.

I too have a few of them I've managed to track down over the years (mostly via other collectors) but at best most of them are a curiosity. The temp score often contains cues of movies that were popular at the time the film was shot (nothing new there) and always distract from the scenes, because they are edited from different scores they often differ in style.

The extended Nightbreed workprint is currently being displayed at film festivals, it is sadly the only remaining version of Barker's original cut and I can't wait to see it someday, I hope that one does get a commercial release, dieing to see the added Cronenberg material. smile

Hi Francis,

I saw the workprint of Nightbreed at a showing last month, the good news is it's getting an official release next year on blu ray! It's not the exact workprint, the guy who restored it took the original shooting script and remade it using scenes from the DVD and the two workprint sources. So it doesn't include every scene they filmed but it's as close as possible to what Clive Barker originally intended.

The quality on the extra footage is still a little rough but they said that it's going through digital restoration work prior to release and will end up looking like the assembly cut of Alien 3 did. They even got some of the original actors to re-record lines, for example in the DVD version every line from Doug Bradley is dubbed by some other guy.

Really looking forward to that one!

If you are interested in workprints feel free to take a look at my site:

Cheers

raising my hat to all of you
i never thought that any one will come back to update this old topic
im still digging the internet for this version since i started this topic but no luck yet
i even started to dig in my old huge collection of VHS tapes but unfortunately i ended up killing 2 VCRs while i 'm trying to play these tapes as their storing condition is very bad
the VHS tapes pile is still huge and i can't play all of them
i also tried to contact TRI-Star but they are out of business
i also tried search the old VHS renting stores that i'm sure i saw this version in their shelfs 20 years back but they are all out of business now

this version is really becoming a treasure now
keep looking

there is another edition of the SiFic movie "Total Recall" contains scores from different movies

examples

1- "Two weeks" sense when Douglas Quaid is wearing the woman face
the score is "Rambo first blood - Hanging On"

2- "reactor activation" when Melina shoot Cohaagen in the Reactor
this score is "Aliens - Ripley's Rescue"

did any one heard about this edition?

It certainly sounds like two tracks Paul Verhoeven would use during editing. Question though, why do you want it so much?

This thread is discussing bootlegs (not officially released material) and since it so forbidden to do so for soundtracks, I guess itisthe same for movies.
People who do not own the rights to Total Recall, is breaking the law if they buy or trade a bootleg and that is what this version is as it is a workprint without the real music in it.
GET IT??

But for your information that can´t find it, have you tried google *name of movie workprint*???
How hard can it be in this day and age (yeah I had this version too once on VHS in the early 90´s), but remember, by doing so you are breaking the law...
