Just in case it ISN'T from the CBS library, please send your mp3 to me too, and I'll see if I know what it is. I have music from several different libraries, and might be able to help.

Hi Ruk,

If you can send me the purported CBS EZ CUE selection as mp3 or wav, I'll be willing to give it a listen and try to identify it. How long is the cue? If you know the full length of the cue, that will help the search. I can scan through the EZ CUE catalog where the category and length of every cue is listed.

Also, there are not that many "dark and sinister (spooky)" LPs in the 75-LP collection, so narrowing the listening focus to that type of cue will make the job a lot easier. Maybe 10-12 LPs to audition.

I have all the LPs transferred to where I can audition individual cues pretty easily in sequence.

If it's really from EZ CUE, it should be a spooky "piece o' cake."

Cbs could make a fortune releasing on cd or on itunes. Other libraries have done with iTunes.

For Jerry Goldsmith fans, there are Jerry Goldsmith cues on 8 CBS EZ CUE discs:

117.....Western Backgrounds
118.....Western Backgrounds
125.....Fantasy
126.....Fantasy / Space - Fantasy
139.....Western Backgrounds
143.....Asiatic, Indian & Chinese Backgrounds
152.....Dramatic - Suspense
154.....Fantasy / Fantasy - Space

Ron Burbella

Thanks to Ron I have been able to identify all of the Goldsmith cues he is aware of in this EZ CUE series of LPs. The results are fascinating, and he gave me the go-ahead to share this information on the forum:

After thoroughly going through all of these tracks, I was surprised to realize that everything has in fact been commercially released on disc, except for two items of great interest...more on those in a moment. The bulk of the EZ Cues are from a few Twilight Zone scores, later released in suites by Varese and Silva. This however is the only way to get them as their own discrete cues, with the actual cue titles. Three TZ scores are I think represented complete: "The Invaders" on EZQ 125, "Back There" is the bulk of the Jerry material on EZQ 126, and "Nervous Man in a $4 Room" is on EZQ 152. Then there are three cues from "Big Tall Wish" filling out the Jerry stuff on 125 and 126, and two cues from "Dust" on EZQ 154.

EZQ 143 is the actual general library music, the disc titled "Asiatic, Indian, and Chinese Backgrounds" -- there is in fact nothing on this disc by Jerry which is not included in that six track suite of "CBS Production Library Music" on the Prometheus disc, "Jerry Goldsmith: The Early Years Vol. 1" -- in fact the Prometheus has a couple extra cues, and some of the EZ Cue versions of the others are truncated. The EZ Cue versions of Mysterious Storm and Knife Fight are as separate cues, which is nice -- I have no idea why Prometheus combined two very different pieces like that.

This brings me to the other two items, the westerns! Now these were an AMAZING find, because they are in fact not generic library stuff but two *complete* scores, otherwise completely unreleased, for the Gunsmoke series. The 10 Jerry Goldsmith tracks on EZQ 117 & 118 ("Western Backgrounds") in fact make up the complete score to Gunsmoke season 6 episode 23, "Old Faces" (hence why "Faces" appears after some of the cue titles, all of which match the episode itself perfectly, by the way). Then EZQ 139 (also called "Western Backgrounds") in fact contains all 11 cues of the complete score for season 6 episode 13, "The Wake"! Both Gunsmoke scores are not only complete but also in perfect chronological episode order, with the exception of a single short cue in "Old Faces" -- "Miss Kitty" which is the second of the two Goldsmith cues on EZQ 117 should actually come in between the cues "The Truth" and "The Confession" on EZQ 118.

These Gunsmoke episodes were both still while the show was only a half hour long with commercials, so only amount to a little over 15 minutes of music which is unavailable anywhere else besides these EZ CUE "library" LPs. But as I love Goldsmith westerns, I consider this a major find, very valuable for our upcoming discussion of Jerry's Gunsmoke scoring on The Goldsmith Odyssey! I can only hope a film music label decides to tackle the Gunsmoke series someday on CD, including Goldsmith's six scores for the series (his last and most substantial, "The Whispering Tree", written six years after the other five, for an hour-length color episode) and well as the best scores by other famous composers who contributed.

I've never seen anyone else correctly and thoroughly identify these Goldsmith EZ cues online, so I thought you all would like to know.

Great work, Yavar! If there's ever a Goldsmith Early Years Volume 2, these should be included, along with the TransWorld Library record mentioned here: http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=115812
Not to steal your thunder, but Bill Wrobel might have connected the dots and written it up somewhere. The cue names suggest specific (rather than generic) scenes, and he's looked over alot of cue sheets for these series at UCLA.
There's other episode-specific Gunsmoke and Virginian cues in the EZ library by Steiner and Herrmann, and of course Twilight Zone by a variety of composers.

With all this EZ CUE discussion going on, and now that our most intrepid Yavar is able to place all of the EZ CUE cues in "Old Faces" and "The Wake," I decided to look on my hard drive and found some other Goldsmith GUNSMOKE scores. They were obtained over many years from various sources on both sides of the Atlantic. Jeepers, I hadn't heard them in years and had forgotten they were there. And they're good.
1. Doc Judge
2. Love Thy Neighbor
3. The Blacksmith
4. The Whispering Tree (sessions with slates) (fair sound)

More fuel for the fire.

Do any of the CBS EZ Cue albums have this track?

The CBS Radio Mystery Theatre, hosted by EG Marshall, was a syndicated radio show that ran in the 70s and I think into the 1980s.

The opening theme music is by Nathan Van Cleave, a passage from the Twilight Zone episode "Two." Then EG Marshall talks, and there is a tease from the upcoming program.

Then, after the tease, each episode had this piece of music with a fluttering clarinet, with reverb, and a low octave piano ostinato beneath. In the link, you can hear it begin at around 2:17:

Tonerow suggested that it might be Marius Constant, and it might, but it is not from any of the Twilight Zone theme variations that were on the 4-CD box set. I could not find this segment on anything else from that box set either.

I don't know if this was written for the CBS library, or if it just ended up there.

Does anyone recognize this? Is it on a CBS EZ Cue album?

The EZ library is only a small subsection of music from CBS. The bridge you mentioned in "CBS Radio Mystery Theatre" sounds like a generic library cue, but it's not in the EZ library that's available and which Ron has listed (albums #101-179).

Back when you inquired about this a few years ago, I had asked the experts at Twilight Zone Cafe, OTR fan Martin Grams (who wrote a book on the series), the YOWP blog guy, and some other library music/otr sites. They must not have known, otherwise I would have posted the info. I dont remember if I asked these guys but you might want to ask them - Bill Wrobel, Taylor White, Paul Mandell.

This is amazing news as well, and also rather curious -- are you saying that The Wake and Old Faces were not among your other Gunsmoke scores that you acquired elsewhere? If so, this might mean that they were sent to the library music division at CBS, or something like that, and not returned to be with the other four scores by Jerry. But they found an alternative way to "slip out" anyway!

In any case, between the two complete on the EZ CUE discs and the four others you have, this is, from everything I can tell, Jerry's complete contribution to the Gunsmoke series. (At least this is everything actually credited to him on IMDb, and the fact that you never got anything that doesn't match with it, seems to be at least semi-confirmation.) Would make a nice full disc as an official release on its own, I suspect...but even better if one of the labels is working on a multi-disc set for this series, which had so many other good and famous composers working on it besides Goldsmith. (I wonder if some of these composers' Gunsmoke scores fill out the rest of the "Western Backgrounds" discs.)

Another question Ron, since you managed to acquire the above CBS western scores: any chance of JG's two Have Gun - Will Travel scores also being in your collection? His second score for that series, A Head of Hair, is probably the best TV western score he ever wrote!

Ruk, drop me a line with the mp3 attached at: sturges47@earthlink.net

I might be able to place it for you. I have the feeling what you are going to send is a Goldsmith cue from TWILIGHT ZONE, either "The Invaders' or "Back There."

Good detective work, Wayne.

I listened to your mp3 and to EZQ 154 - B6; MAUSOLEUM (0:46) (Wilfred Josephs).

They are identical!
Do you need anything else other than that confirmation?

Any idea if the main and end titles of the unaired pilot to The Fugitive ever hit an LP release?

1. FEAR IN A DESERT CITY (unaired version)

The main and end title was a stock cue from the CBS EZQ library entitled "Rhythmic Theme" composed by Richard Shores

You know what would be and awesome project -- albeit huge and time consuming -- if we could put all the tracks online by album, then people like use start identifying what TV series they are from (and what shows/episodes they were tracked into, if we recognize them). Just the thought of owning such a collection makes my mouth water some.
