Nice blog post on POINT BLANK: http://cinebeats.blogsome.com/2007/08/29/lee-marvin-the-reluctant-killer/ It's a well-worn sentiment, but do watch the film and listen to how brilliantly Mandel's music ("Nostalgic Monologue") goes with it. Sharon Acker's retelling of how her character met Walker (Lee Marvin) is but one instance where the score stands out. I think that Point Blank the score will catch your attention for all the right reasons when experienced with the film. I like that line a lot. Brewster: "You’re a very bad man, Walker, a very destructive man! Why do you run around doing things like this?"

Speaking of "The Organization", is it any surprise that Point Blank failed to get an Oscar nomination for Best Picture while a steaming pile like Doctor Doolittle--which was a huge flop for 20th Cetury Fox--managed to do so? It killed Fox and Rex Harrison's career, though for the latter, old age would've done that soon enough. Looks like "The Organization" was doing everything in its power to save itself. Plus, there was that cheap-looking preachfest that was Guess Who's Coming to Dinner getting a place among the nominees, too. The studio system was certainly at the crossroads in 1967, wasn't it? Well, at least the Academy (sort of) made up for it by honoring The Graduate, In the Heat of the Night, and Bonnie & Clyde.

Liked the film a lot more this time around and as for the common thought that Lee Marvin's Walker is dreaming of revenge is blatantly clear, at least to my feeble brain. In the commentary, Boorman was purposefully vague about whether the events that unfold are real or dreamed. I think he likes the idea of nobody knowing for sure, and from where I sit, it's a combination of real and fantasy depending on the moment in question. It's a fascinating structure that probably reveals more nuance with each viewing.
