I still love this score and would love to see a 2 disc special edition of the complete score. The film version of War is outstanding (although the writing at 6/7 minutes on the album is extraordinary and I wish was in the film) as is the final battle music.

Avatar is in my top ten Horner scores.

I tend to really like Horner's stuff but this one was a little "middle of the road" for me? Give me Man Without A Face, Krull, House Of Cards or Mighty Joe Young any day of the week over this one. Something about it just struck me as a little too safe, a little too ... sterile, almost? To each their own.

(Was talking to a friend yesterday and she said how much she loved Debney's How To Train Your Dragon. I heard soundclips on Amazon and thought to myself, "Wow, this is what I was hoping Avatar was going to sound like...")

Good point about the score "sounding" safe. Its a good effort by Horner and I look forward to a complete edition if one ever comes out. But when I heard "Excelsius", I thought that's what Avatar score could have been.

Anytime you mention The Man Without A Face, I have to comment. God I love that score (except for that awful Sneakers rip in "Flying"). I hadn't actually sat down to watch the film in a long, long time, and it's almost weird to hear the score in the movie now. You know? Anyway, I really wish Horner would write music like this again. Intelligent orchestrations and themes all over the place!

Nice pointer smile Thanks! I'm not at all religious person and can't be supportive of the individual that the original documentary was about, but the music is still quite inspiring.

Although certain bits do sound very much like Titanic, A Beautiful Mind, and a few other Horner scores, that doesn't stop it being a great soundtrack, possibly the best of the year, but I haven't heard "Up" yet. Avatar is certainly on my list of favourites. Not the top though, but, close...

John Powell, actually, not Debney. wink

On one hand, it's great to hear more music from Avatar is being released commercially - on the other hand, however, it's still not complete nor is it being released on disc. frown

Could we get Avatar expanded this Xmas? Feels about right after Titanic.

I wouldn't expect it anytime soon - most expanded scores are limited to rule changes in 2006 - which is why most expansions are only prior to that period.

I'd love to have this though.

Forgot about that pesky little rule.

What rule are you referring to? I've either totally spaced it or haven't heard it to begin with.

Licensing fees go up substantially making expanded releases after a certain date unaffordable. (For specialty labels)

I thought it was 2005 rather than the year after.

It's a while since I've seen the film, what is the best music left off the original album?

Considering there's a 4 or 5 disc promo out there a lot of music is missing. A lot of the best climatic action music is missing.

The film versions of most cues are better. Especially the climactic battle stuff.

Only scores recorded in the US though, I'm pretty sure. It was an AFM contract change. Avatar was recorded in London.

Good to know.
