This is part of a deal recently made to distribute the Turner catalog in international territories. In other words, it's the same material that Rhino has been issuing, and FSM too. Sounds like for ease of production they are reusing Rhino masters. It does not affect our ongoing production of Turner titles.

Many thanks for the information. I wonder if this will finally include the three titles which have previously only been available as downloads: "The Belle Of New York", "Deep In My Heart" and "The Boyfriend"
What was the issue with the thin sounding mastering of the Poltergeist CD? Different source, or different mix? I suppose a complete overhaul and remix of the original masters--if they can be found--would be an insanely pricey proposition...
I wouldn't expect any of these to be ANY different from their Rhino counterparts (except perhaps packaging-wise).
There is, as you say, no reason to suppose that the content of these will be any different from those previously issued by Rhino but these releases are targeted for the European market and, as Shircorp has said, include discs which were not previously available in Europe. Prices are also very low which may attract the casual buyer.
It was indeed from a different source, that source being analog.
This clearly would have affected the sound of the mix also as is usually the case with situations such as these.
The LP was a digital recording, therefore taken from the original masters.
So.... what was the reason the team behind the CD release used the analog source? Were the digital masters missing? I have long since gotten rid of my copy of the CD so I can't remember if the liner notes addressed this....
Yes, basically the original masters couldn't be obtained at the time, only analog duplicated generation masters were available for the Rhino release. I cannot tell you exactly how far removed from the originals the analog masters used were at this moment in time.
I believe this was also addressed on the back of the CD.
Maybe you'll find more information in the booklet. There are usually informative production notes about the source material of the release. Another great thing about the Rhino releases was the separate page with detailed discographical data. That's about the only feature I really miss on the FSM releases...
To prevent people from spending money for nothing: we will have a 2CD Poltergeist out later this year. Mike Matessino is going back to the source elements to improve upon the Rhino edition and also add a second disc of alternates and the LP program.

WELL THERE YOU GO!!!! SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET !!
Looks like I'll be unloading the Rhino disc ASAP. While I could do without the LP program (adds five bucks to the price for no reason, in my mind), the news about alterate cues in intriguing.
