In all our years, I don't know that I've ever actually heard of anyone receiving a creased booklet. Go know.

Oh, almost every single one has a crease of some kind through the booklet. The Stu Phillips is one of the rare exceptions.

Odd...I've bought half a dozen or so direct from Bruce and have never received a damaged item yet. You have poor luck sir.

Just bought it as well! WOOHOOO!!!!!

AMAZING release!!!!!!!

If this doesn't sell out in 15 minutes, I'll be hornswoggled!

ORDERED it INSTANTLY!!!!!

P.S.: Dear Bruce:
I finally got around to hearing your superb PROMISES PROMISES recording.
Unbelievable! I felt like I was back in the Shubert, seeing it for the second time.
(The first time was the Boston tryout, back when Ken Howard was still in it; he left to do 1776.)
That characteristic 60's brass sound was great!
Thanks.

And MULTIPLE MANY THANK YOU'S for ONE EYED JACKS!!!!!!

Needless to say, it's been very hard not to acknowledge it was this, but I'm glad the Jacks' out of the bag. I love this score so much and it's taken a really long time to make it happen, but here it is and, as I hope you'll hear from the audio clips (which are mp3s and obviously not as good as the CD itself), it sounds pretty amazing. This is my second favorite Friedhofer score (after Best Years) and one of my ten favorite scores of all time.

Thank you SO much Bruce for making this happen. If Best Years didn't exist, this would probably be considered Friedhofer's magnum opus. Could you tell us a little bit more about how this release came about? Obviously in the other thread a lot of people doubted it was One-Eyed Jacks because the original tracks were thought to be lost and the rights to the score (like the film) were in question...and just to be sure, your CD does have the complete score for the original full length of the film? Lots of this music is being heard for the first time, right? This is major front page film music news if so!

Thanks also for preserving the sound of the recording and also for involving Nick Redman for more extensive liner notes than your releases usually have.

Now one last greedy question: I'm broke. Any chance I could have a free copy since I was the first to dare guessing One-Eyed Jacks in the other thread? smile

(OMG, Nevada Smith could be it but what about...One Eyed Jacks?! If Hugo scored the original cut of the film I suspect his score could spread across two CDs!)

The first two samples alone are so amazing that I would have bought this just for either one of the two discs standing alone! I have NEVER heard this score before but I ordered it in a snap!

My God, Mr. Kimmel, I truly can't believe it - and can't thank you enough. Had this since the year it came out when I was 10 years old and dreamed of a release like this ever since. It's in my top 20 scores of all-time. Thanks again.

I just noticed that Screen Archives added one of those tabs on their main page for Kritzerland. About time - very cool!

I've bought most of their releases too, and have never had a creased one, and if I had gotten one it sure wouldn't bother me at all!

Well done making this special work available in a comprehensive and updated form, I know I'll appreciate it.

I got one badly creased once. By soaking it in water overnight and apply an iron lightly you can get rid of the crease. Sometimes this must be repeated daily for up to a week. Color fades out of the booklet but WhaLa the crease is gone.

The hiss (which is on the original tapes) is the hiss - it's mostly evident in the quiet passages - I never really mind it at all and we discussed whether to do away with some of it, but as soon as you do that all the lovely high end and air goes with it - so I don't de-hiss much. It's tape - I like it smile

Great to hear, you made the right decision. I also prefer crisp high end to noise and hiss reduction. What you loose is gone. And the clips sound great indeed, and complete, and stereo. I saw this film first time some 35 years ago and now finally all the music. WOW! I'm still speachless.

A sincere Thank You to Bruce, and all at Kritzerland for releasing One Eyed Jacks...my Holy Grail! I am looking forward so much to hearing this and to reading the essay and notes by Nick Redman. This is a great day in this collectors life and for all the other lovers of this great score, they don't come much better than this! Thanks to you all once again!

Given your avatar I knew you'd be pleased smile

Bruce, I am extremely "pleased" you have my deep gratitude and heartfelt thanks! You have now released my top two 'most wanted' items, One Eyed Jacks and Love With The Proper Stranger. Thank heavens for you, Nick, Lukas, Doug, Ford, Ray, William, John and Anna, and all the other folks at the great labels, including our beloved Italian, Spanish, and Euro friends, who deliver the goods week in week out, you have enriched all our lives and that's the truth, as I see it anyway! I've been fascinated by this film and music ever since I first watched it in 1961, the old Liberty LP is one of my prized possessions, God, I must have listened to that thousands of times over the years! Film Music collecting days don't come much better than this!

This might be the wrong topic for an FSM thread, let me know:

Suppose I want to see OEJ on DVD. What's the best release currently available?

I have an all-region player, so if there's a better release in a different region . . . what would it be?

I find it a bit odd there's no year listed in the press release (1961 apparently....)

Anyway, this sounds great (hissy, but all the music comes through anyway). I'm not as big on Friedhofer as many people here, but I do really like this (and it's VERY generous on the sound samples, even more than usual I think....)

Oddly enough, I'd be more likely to buy this were Spacecamp still around, but I may...hope...I still get to it before it's sold out.

Oh thank you kindly! Now lets talk about not putting any subtle (as a sledgehammer) reverb in mono recordings for listening pleasure, you big sissy! wink

I'm all for capturing the hiss to the utmost ability that today's technology will permit.

As far as I know they're all public domain, usually made from some 1" video tape borrowed from a TV station. Please Paramount sort it all out & release a stunning Blu-ray.

I just noticed that Screen Archives added one of those tabs on their main page for Kritzerland. About time - very cool!

They probably didn't do it earlier because Kritzerland titles always sold/sell out so fast there wasn't much left to put in that tab!

I'm going to go on record predicting this as one of Kritzerland's fastest sell-outs ever, and the fastest Friedhofer sell-out ever too (though most of the Intrada Friedhofer releases of the past couple years have gone pretty fast, probably because thanks to Nick Redman and the labels so many more people are exposed to Friedhofer's music!)

Yavar

P.S. Bruce, your comment about the alternate main title in your notes is NOT COOL to put online when you don't also provide a sound sample of the track in question, man! wink

From your mouth to the DVD gods' ears! But why not ask Criterion instead? I'm sure they'd do an even better job than Paramount as regards a restoration, and they do a lot of PD films that nobody else bothers to lavish time and effort upon.

Look at another one-time directorial masterpiece that The Digital Bits just finally announced: Charles Laughton's amazing Night of the Hunter. Now thanks to Criterion we're getting in in the original aspect ratio at last, with a whole ton of bonus features and yes they ARE doing a Blu-ray version!
