A couple of nice songs from MARVIN HAMLISCH and a nice haunting theme from PINO DINOGGIO, makes this a cd want from me.

An official release of this is in dire need to see the light of day soon...

I've been thrilled to see how many OTHERS have been captivated by this music AND by the film itself!!! Great!

I notice that there was a NINETEEN MONTH GAP between my posting yesterday and the last one for this discussion, so I'm pleased to have been the one to take it out of mothballs! (It was started in August of 2010!!!) Let's keep beating the drum for a CD for this soundtrack!

I would love to see this get released officially. Also, I'd like to mention that when I went to see "The Fan" in a local theater with friends at the time, just as the end credits started the film caught on fire.

Hate when that happens.

That is all.

This film seems to have been hovering in my peripheral vision for ages -- largely attributable to the fact that the promo stills all seem to show the impossibly gorgeous Michael Biehn sans shirt. But now that I find out the great Pino Donaggio did the score, I might have to finally see this embarrassment

This is off-topic, but your post gives me an opportunity to confess that when I was a projectionist in high school I accidentally burned the film "The China Syndrome" while they were explaining what a nuclear meltdown is (not my fault -- there was a piece of tape on the print that caught in the film gate). I've saved that piece of film all these years to prove this happened. Needless to say, it was a great effect but one that the theater manager had no desire for me to duplicate in subsequent screenings.

Now, back to Donaggio....

Yes, back to the composer of this terrific score! I just wanted to post this to keep this thread alive ... and say once again how thrilled I was to discover so many others have sought a recording of it over the years. I think I may have mentioned that it was me who resurrected this thread after lying neglected for 19 months. (Although I'm sure others had read it during that period but NOT posted comments.) So I appreciate the continued interest!

I heard a rumor once that there was an unmentionable vinyl release for this film, but not sure if it contained any of the Donaggio score or only the songs (or if it even exists). Anyone ever seen or heard of this? I'm also aware of a couple unmentionable CD releases of the Donaggio score but have been told the sound quality is pretty bad (probably taken from a film print or DVD copy rather than the original tapes). It would be nice to get a legit release of this, especially for the main title music (still in my opinion one of the great opening credits sequences ever done, though unfortunately the rest of the film can't live up to that terrific opening).

Hope so! Chiming in as another fan of this one, a total home run from Pino
in his heyday, a highpoint of his 'romantic suspense' writing.

Complicated, to me, says.....Hamlisch's Hearts, Not Diamonds. And the Bacall 'vocal'.

I'm sure some wacko out there would complain about their exclusion, but if you
could pull it off without that ashtray-laden caterwauling, and all that putrid Broadway
garbage, and just stick to Pino....THAT would be a good record.

Reading back through the above posts, no mention has been made that this was
a REALLY uncomfortable film, so rumor has it.
Biehn and Bacall did not get along, the whole set was troubled and a hostile
shoot. I've read snippets about this over the years, namely an 80's Fangoria interview
with Biehn, around the time of ALIENS, that touched on it. But apparently no one really
wants to talk about the film, and I don't think we're going to see a special edition any
time soon.

Anybody have more evidence or facts to my conjecture? wink

Hey MV, while you're trying to untangle all that legal jargon for THE FAN, why not release TEX or KANSAS - OR BOTH!!! - in the meantime smile
They are two lovely Americana flavoured scores by Pino.
Thanks for your efforts!

I resurrected this discussion of Pino Donaggio's very interesting score for "The Fan" on 9-12-13 after it (the discussion) lay dormant for 19 months, writing: I would definitely want the opening WITH the fan's (Biehn's) narration -- I don't think that it works well without it. Back when I was making CDs of audio moments from DVDs I should have taken that very effective opening, but didn't. One of these days I'll have to do that.

But it was nice to find that this soundtrack means a lot to many people. I've always loved the movie -- Michael Biehn is quite good in his role as the obsessed fan, and Bacall is also very good as the famous star being stalked by someone who's supposed to be in love with her. Quite chilling, yet satisfying. And the music stops you in your tracks!

With the upcoming Donaggio release of "Patrick," I hope Quartet Records sees fit to search out this other very effective and very neglected score by the same composer.

I think the above post at least tells us that the labels are aware of it and want it released, Ron.

PhiladelphiaSon:

I tried to follow your link, but it wanted me to set up an account, so I made up a user i.d. as well as a password, agreed to their terms, but instead of finally taking me to your link, it wanted all sorts of information about my music preferences. So I immediately logged off. How many more questions was it going to ask me???

PS: When I went back to my email, it was asking me to confirm my email, which I did, but haven't been back. It seems to be involved in "The Cloud," and while I've set up my fancy new Mac to be connected to "The Cloud," I've not cared for it and just don't use it. Maybe now that I've set up an account there, I can try your link again and maybe it'll take me directly there. Here goes.

I'm back, and yes, this time I got it! Thanks! LOVE that music!
