Yup, lots of Varese releases in my collection. Excellent company.

Now if I could just learn how to properly pronounce their name. LOL! I'm sure I've been saying it wrong all these years.

Yep! Is it Var-rez or Var-reese? Or neither?

Classical French pronunciation would be Var-REZ-uh, with the uh just barely spoken.

There's no uh. I once did a pronounce-along at a record distributor convention. Vuhrehz.

THE soundtrack label of soundtrack labels indeed. I don't think there is any person who is fond of film music that does not have Varese soundtracks in their collection of film scores... and there are many score fans out there.
It would be very interesting to have available sometype of book... or even better in PDF format, files with an extended catalogue categorizing by year and label number every single soundtrack that Varese has released both on LP and cd since their very fist release and other bits of info. Even though it's an excellet source and has substantial information, I'm not sure soundtrack collector lists every single soundtrack that has been released by Varese Sarabande.
Do you guys keep track of the number of soundtracks by Varese you have in your collection? I've lost count but I can bet that Varese outnumbers evey other label in my collection.

In that case, I was closer than I thought! I was pronouncing it practically the same, just with an S sound at the end instead of the Z, and the "uh" like Mark said.

What about "Sarabande?" I've always pronounced it as "Sara" + "Bond." I figured the "e" was silent.

Well, there IS a gigantic discography listing on the Wikipedia page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varese_Sarabande

I always pronounced their name as Vah-rehz Sarah banned-e. It's probably not 100% correct though. wink

As Basil noted, that Wikipedia entry is cool - although the year and additional details isn't included (for that, I'd still recommend Soundtrackcollector). But Robert L. Smith's guides (second edition at http://www.amazon.com/US-Soundtracks-CD-Robert-Smith/dp/0967517702 , http://openlibrary.org/works/OL2445960W/U.S._soundtracks_on_compact_disc ) also contain a Varese breakdown by catalog number that is similar to the Wikipedia listing.

I personally think collecting a bunch of their earlier CD releases is a lot of fun!

I've gotten ahold of a number of the VSD-52XX releases, and possibly half of the VSD-53XX releases. I think that around the time when the VSD-54XX discs came out it started mixing broadway recordings, musicals, classical albums and mainstream albums along with the soundtracks and scores.

The Great Mouse Detective is one of my most cherished Varese discs... I paid $15 for mine and I don't regret it one bit. Same with Conan the Barbarian, which I paid $8 for at a store in Montana years ago.

I'd like to complete my VSD-52XX and VSD-53XX collection - assuming there's no mainstream titles in there anywhere... but it's all about the music, of course.

...But I just get so giddy seeing all of those maroon-colored spines! big grin

I love Varese! I just wish they had a message board over there too. It would be nice to talk to Robert Townson like we do Bruce, Roger, Doug, Ford and MV.

Good job they haven't got a message board. Can you imagine all comments? "Where's my order?" 'It still says pending." 'Has it shipped yet?" "What are you releasing next?" Blah, blah, blah. LOL

Thanks for the tips. Didn't think of looking at wiki. BTW, I have kept the catalogue inserts that came with some of their older cd's. Those come in handy. I don't know if they did that with their LP's and if they still do with their current releases. Apart from their club releases, I really haven't purchased any new titles for some time now... and speaking of club releases, when is the next batch due?

Children of the Corn
The Manhatten Project
Piranha

Anyone notice Varese take their logo off some front covers for albums on iTunes? e.g. King of the Hill by Cliff Martinez.

I have nothing but good words for our brown-and-white friends - we'd all be a lot worse off if they hadn't been around in the '80s. They're no longer the only game in town, but they blazed the trail!

My first Varese album (not counting Rambo: First Blood Part II because the UK release of that and other Varese '80s albums was licensed to That's Entertainment Records): The Abyss.

Perhaps those particular albums are distributed by someone else? Check the label they state.

And no one's added Spartacus to that page yet?! I'll do it. Brought the regular releases up to date, too.

I love Varèse.

I was vey happy when in 1998 Varèse decided to change distributors. I added 200+ brown spines for quite a bargain. The fun-part that there were a lot of titles I would not have bought otherwise and they were each marvelous (well, 99% of them anyway big grin ). Varèse has a constant strong output through the years. That wasn't any different during the Kraft-years.

Love their old LP and CD releases.

Tobad that they don't release more of the old stuff, like their Club releases.

Indeed, the Varese catalog speaks for itself. The label has been a great boon to those of us who love film music, and we all owe everybody there our gratitude.

The main reason why I love Varese Sarabande:

19 (yes, nineteen) Marco Beltrami releases, and counting. They supported him from the very beginning of his career and now, 15+ years later, they are still supporting him strong with great contemporary releases as well as further support for his early music!

Holy Wow. Keep up the good work!

The other reasons I love Varese Sarabande:

Everything else they've done. smile

Deputy, you might not have heard of him, but VS lent the same support to a little known Brit called John Powell to almost the same degree wink

I thought that this started like the "Praise" thread, so why the sudden bashing? smile
but let's be serious for a while. Varese is great, except when it isn't and it's one of the worst then (remember G.I. Joe or Hellboy mastering?).
