I got inspired by this post and listened to this score after a long time. It’s surely not a classic work in Maestro’s discography but a good score nonetheless. The main theme is certainly the highlight and the 2 versions featuring the male choir give me the chills. Morricone has written better suspense music but I like that it incorporates the main theme in several disguises (including a Horner-like danger-motif for brass) and also “desert music” à la The Good, the bad and the ugly (which was later explored in The Hateful 8).
Spot on Bill. EM has a definite preference for chimneys, cracks and windows, always keeping things interesting and surprising. This is what keeps us coming back all the time for more !
I would've wrestled lightning for my original Poo LP!! They were top end bug bucks back then.
Well not when I bought them. Mr. Poo had a record store and made special emphasis on these new "Japanese" pressings THE HILLS RUN RED, BREAKHEART PASS and HORNET'S NEST. He sold them for normal prices at the time. Eventually he told me "I'm Poo!" and unfortunately the FBI agreed and that was the end of that.
Still haven’t seen the film but it looks to be on YouTube so I may remedy that soon. I always liked the score even though it’s not in my top 28 or anything like that.
Originally saw this in the mid 70s on its UK bbc1 tv premiere. Then struggled to get the Poo LP but got it eventually - probably Dean Street or Thats Entertainnent. Was side 2 Allonsanfan and Monk's Tarantula or did i get that wrong?
