Which movie version is this? Is it the one with "Thank you very much, thank you very much" and "I like life" etc?
In that case i love this!!

Yes, that's the version this thread is inquiring about.

As I mention in another thread about this much-loved musical, the rights issues surrounding the soundtrack are very perplexing to my old brain! The film itself has been out on VHS, laser disc, DVD and Blu Ray, the stage adaptation is on CD, so what is it about the actual soundtrack that makes a CD release so complicated compared to the other released media?

As far as I can tell there's no particular problem with reissuing the soundtrack album, assuming there's a master tape available. The rights are with Sony Music. As the film was released by the theatrical arm of CBS at the time, the rights are now with Paramount, which means they would control the additional music. An effort to locate it would have to be undertaken and then an expanded version would require a Paramount/Sony Music co-license.

Thanks for the reply Mike. I'd be more than happy with a decent CD of the old album, especially as several of the songs get more satisfying endings compared to the film versions. If Sony Music are sole owners of the album master I'm really surprised this hasn't been reissued already. They appear to licence their pop/soul catalog quite freely, but maybe soundtracks are a different kettle of fish?

When I last checked no contract could be located at Sony, Paramount or CBS. Things may have changed. That was a few years ago

Did you look in that bottom right hand drawer, in the very back behind of the files?

I agree that this is one UNDERRATED soundtrack and film. I really hope that the soundtrack gets released on CD some day soon. While this movie did not make an impact in 1970, it certainly has garnered a large following in the years since. I saw it as a kid when it first came out as part of a double feature and was totally captured. Great flick, awesome soundtrack.

One of my favorite Christmas scores, and my second favorite musical (after "Paint Your Wagon"). A dire need of a C.D. release as is "Paint Your Wagon" with both the rerecording (only the overture and the finale is from the film) and the original soundtrack.

May we presume that, to paraphrase Mr Dickens, a Scrooge soundtrack CD is "as dead as a door-nail"?

Useless trivia—engineer Dick Lewzey had his job interview at CTS Bayswater on a day that Scrooge was being recorded by John Richards.

Just over 11 weeks to Christmas and it seems that a straightforward transfer to CD of the original album is still as unlikely as me winning the lottery!

Even without a copy of the contract. Sony should just announce the CD. Anyone with a copy will come running forward to make sure they get their cut.

This should really be investigated. The 1970 Scrooge soundtrack is a treasure, that's greatness be shared with upcoming generations.

Make it so.

It has been investigated. Lukas put a lot of effort looking into it for years and I've picked up on it since. It won't be this year but next year is the 50th and in the interim we'll see what happens.

Dear Mike,

I've been trying to contact you for years. Can you tell us about other restoration projects that you would love to do? Wish you could work on restoring the Enchanted World of Brothers Grimm. I've only the read the comic book adaption, but when I tried to dig up a copy of the movie, neither the VHS or anything else looked like it did the movie justice, so I held off on seeing it. Please work on older, lost films.

I'm not too hard to find, JThree! Did you send messages that I've missed?

There are many projects I'd love to work on and some things I'm looking forward to tackling that I'm pleased to be involved with. Too involved a subject to go into here.

When Mr. Bricusse gets to L.A. in December we're going to see what we can do about Scrooge. I have a feeling that scoring masters are gone, but hopefully we can at least get the soundtrack album out. I also have some demos from Ian Fraser.

I hope this happens. Beautiful score. The Laser Disc included the Overture but I don't believe subsequent releases did.

Thinking positive thoughts!
