What, no Love for the Doo? And seriously, counterpoint, top 20 Newman scores and no mention of Ice Age, Galaxy Quest, The Phantom and Anastasia? Really? MV I was very serious. I love Ice Age, Galaxy Quest, The Phantom and Anastasia but the one I`ve mentioned are my absolutely favorite Newman scores. Some of the most brilliant filmmusic compositions of the last century. But ok, here are my numbers 21 - 50: 21- Crazy on the Outside 22- Jingle All the Way 23- Anastasia 24- Bill & Ted`s Bogus Journey 25- The Coneheads 26- Matilda 27- The Spirit 28- Animals United 29- Scooby Doo 30- The Nutty Professor 31- Rover Dangerfield 32- Life or something like it 33- That Night 34- The Phantom 35- Nutty Professor 2 36- The Flintstones: Viva Rock Vegas 37- Gross Anatomy 38- Firebirds 39- Meet the Applegates 40- The Marrying Man 41- Boys on the Side 42- Mighty Ducks 43- Norbit 44-The Phantom 45- Affair of the Necklace 46- Brokedown Palace 47- Galaxy Quest 48- Ice Age 49- Welcome Home, Roscoe Jencins 50- Out to Sea lol Your bottom 10 looks almost like my top ten. MV In terms of quality all the scores in my Top 50 are very close. I also love the "bottom 10" of course. And there are so many more fantastic scores by Newman. Just think about Don`t tell mom the Babysitter is dead, Malone, Honeymoon in Vegas, Runestone, Heathers, Critters, Frankenweenie, The Cowboy Way, Death to Smoochy, Scooby Doo 2, Serenity. They are wonderful as well. And I haven`t even mentioned Newman`s shorts like Itsy Bitsy Spider, Cranium Command, Songs from my Father, Back to Neverland, Michael & Micky and The Flower Planet. Great stuff.

I'm quite partial to HOFFA and THE PHANTOM, but his comedy scoring can really get on my nerves. ICE AGE has some great dramatic moments but the comedy stuff....nah!!

I'm quite partial to HOFFA and THE PHANTOM, but his comedy scoring can really get on my nerves. ICE AGE has some great dramatic moments but the comedy stuff....nah!! I know that many people have a hard time with Newman`s wild and wacky style. But I can`t get enough of it. Nobody can write that kind of comedy music as masterful and inventive as David Newman. Just listen to all the details in Meet the Applegates or his Scooby Doo scores for example. It is so well crafted and full of ideas. The combination of loops, samples and orchestra is simply mind blowing. It`s exactly that kind of "too muchness" that I really love.

I highly recommend Duck Tales which is my all time favorite Newman score. It really is his wild style done in a grand and symphonic way. Simply amazing. I really hope that Intrada one day...

Seeing as everybody else cheated here's my 6-10 list. HOFFA. If this suffers from anything, it's the mono-thematic nature of it. BUT WHAT A THEME!! The inspiration for countless trailers thereafter, it's just a stunning, rising melody that Cliff Eidelman used as inspiration for his majestic METEOR MAN score. It lends the film a sense of gravitas that all great film scores should do. LITTLE MONSTERS. This reminds me of To Kill A Mockingbird at times. Newman scores the childhood scenes in a similar style to EB in his timeless score. It's another sad, tragic soundtrack at times, although the 'other-world' music is impressively big and apocalyptic. Also, the track Sign Running is just so joyously euphoric, it makes me tingle everytime. PARADISE. Another one-theme score, but again, a fantastic theme nonetheless from this underrated little family drama. DN was kind enough to send me a tape of the score, but I hope it's on Intrada's Disney/Touchstone/whatever list for a future CD release. ICE AGE. One of his biggest hits and probably most popular scores. The opening travel music always puts a smile on my face and the big, tender emo-stuff really packs a whallop, especially in the film, when the group unit is threatened or strengthened and at the end, when the child returns to it's human-folk. OPERATION DUMBO DROP/JINGLE ALL THE WAY It's tough to separate these two. Film-wise, I really enjoyed Dumbo Drop and the score helped elevate the drama and action (that final plummet from the plane music is tremendous) while I HATED Jingle ALL THE WAY Horrible, horrible film but DN at least makes one thing worthwile about the whole proceedings. The music is quite spectacular at times, more superhero than christmas music. If you like his PHANTOM score and wish he'd scored similar-styled films, plenty of this is cut from similar cloth. Like others above, I could list many more and there are so many of his scores that have never been properly released (his Nutty Prof & Scooby Doo scores, Dr Doolittle, and many action/comedy romps contain truly amazing scores). I think he brings a Golden-Age sensibility within his Modern Age style.

"5. Tarzan (I know there are mixed opinions on this score, but I'm finding myself coming back to it a lot lately. The cue "Tarzan Helps Jane" and the last half of this album are terrific)" ---------------------------- Yes, I really enjoy his TARZAN score too. Obviously he had to incorporate that modern sound here and there, but there's still plenty of typically fantastic Newman scoring in there, like the track you mentioned. So emotional.

PARADISE (1991) - I love every bit of this... thanks Intrada! OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY (1991) I LOVE TROUBLE (1994) - Several excellent cues in this one, but "Scoop De Jour" is a real showstopper. MR. DESTINY (1990) MATILDA (1996) THE PHANTOM (1996) HOFFA (1992) - I only like the End Credits, really, but it's such a great theme. TOMMY BOY (1995) - It's pure pastiche, ripping off Elfman's BACK TO SCHOOL, MIDNIGHT RUN and PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE in addition to the shameless lifts from DAVE and MRS. DOUBTFIRE, but I have a real soft-spot for this one.
