Quote: Another title I would LOVE to see get its own release (remastered and including the music not on the Varese release) - is The Other. It's one of Goldsmith's best from the early 70's and the sound could definitely be improved upon.

I SO COMPLETELY AGREE! And since it's so rarely mentioned on this board I didn't think anyone else liked his score to THE OTHER (sarcasm intended). Some really significant music is missing from the old Varese... including the all important whistling tracks. But I suspect it's missing because it couldn't be found back in the 90's. When I think about all the other stuff that's been discovered in the interim it gives me some hope. I grew up watching this movie over and over again and can't get enough of its main theme.

Quote: I put Link and Peter Proud on the list because complete foot warmers are purported to exist (but I don't have them myself so I can't confirm for sure).

You mean to tell me there are LINK and PETER PROUD foot warmers? Jeez, I'd love to get these for my girlfriend so she can keep her toes comfortable on cold northwest nights. She might prefer the Pokemon foot warmers she was looking at last week in Spencer's, but if I'm buying it's really up to me, right? And who could say no to that cute homicidal monkey in LINK?

The Mummy

The Mummy was actually released by Decca, not Varese.

I thought "The Mummy" was pretty complete, no?

I would buy any and all Goldsmith expansions.

Absolutely agree on "The Other" just a fantastic beautiful score.

You may consider it definitive, but it isn't complete or chronological apparently.

Please explain as I see no one complaining here:

Nice to hear some more love for this great score!! I also grew up watching this flick and thought Goldsmith captured the time and place perfectly - as well as the horror elements of course, but we all know he's a master at that. I think the main theme as heard in the opening of the film is one of Goldsmith's greatest creations. The wistful melody played on piccolo with the harp accompaniment is so lilting but there is the quietly disturbing punctuation of the gong/waterphone and muted brass every 4 bars that keeps this from being completely pastoral. Then the restatement in the violins with the violas, and the descending bassoon figure - such a perfect sound palette for the setting of the story, and truly one of Goldsmith's most beautiful melodies.

There are so many other variations and the equally beautiful theme for the Mother in the score, it would be wonderful to see this title get a complete release of its own in improved sound quality, if such a thing is possible with the elements that exist.

One more thing, the DVD available of the film is outstanding - near blu-ray quality!

Seven Days in May would probably need to be paired with another film. Jerry recorded about 11 minutes of music and I assume Amram did a similar amount.

For me the top priority now would be Psycho II, it is missing half the score and it is a personal favourite.
Of course I'd welcome other things like Congo.

The Vanishing

This one seems pretty complete in my view...

There are many left, the list in the first post is rather detailed. Well researched, I wouldn´t even have thought about half of them.

A feeling in my gut is telling me that "The River Wild" is not that far away. The same with "Mulan". Sure, it´s very likely that I´m wrong in both cases... but it´s hard to beat that feeling. I don´t know... the timing for both releases seems to be right. Don´t know how else to explain it.

I wonder though: why is it that so many releases NOT being expanded are by Varese? Right now it appears they are just sitting on it and warm them up with their a**es. Why are they doing this? Fees? Re-issue right? Lack of money?

Six Degrees of Separation (Elektra -- Warner Bros. Records) -- maybe LLL or Intrada

I'm pretty sure there's more music on this CD than there is in the film. It's an extremely brief score.

No. The complete score (as heard in the film, with fade outs into and out of source music and such) was on one of the DVD releases of the film. It didn't play during the film like most isolated scores but rather in the background of one of the menu pages. There have been some boots made from this source, but since it was a DVD, not a Blu-ray disc, the sound isn't lossless like a CD. I really hope we get a complete version (with any music not heard in the film) from Intrada.

Please explain as I see no one complaining here

I'm personally happy with my 2 Days release; I'm merely pointing out that according to Intrada themselves their recent release was an album mock-up and not actually a C&C release. No one would complain because none of Goldsmith's music is in the film anyway so almost nobody has any idea what music is left off the album arrangement! The "foot warmer" of the score that some people had was also the album mock-up.

Thanks for pointing out that The Vanishing was pretty much complete, CindyLover. I've removed it from the list. I think I just got carried away and put everything Varese released from his 90s output...but I should've left that out because their release wasn't done in the 90s and therefore could include more than a half hour of score. smile

And thanks for the tip about Six Degrees, Schiffy -- I've removed it along with The Vanishing.

I also updated the original post to go all the way back to the 50s, though the further back one goes the more dicey finding existing tapes gets.

Right now the only one I have in mind... Star Trek Insurrection. I am sure it is in the works, but all of the Star Trek love over the last couple of years has this at the top of the list. Plus, I just watched the film about a week ago. Really has grown on me over the years, and the score is both very beautiful and extremely exciting.

Same, the scene where Geordi looks off into the sunset being able to see with his real eyes for the first time and the music Jerry plays is always so emotional, I really love it.

The COMPLETE score to "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea" episode "Jonah And The Whale" with the percussion whacks restored on the main and end titles (the one on the G.N.P. Crescendo C.D. doesn't have them).

One 50 second track has been left off of each - so all of them.

We've been having a seemingly never ending flood of wonderful Goldsmith expansions/remasterings/perfectionist tweakings these past few years...far more than for any other composer. And I'm not complaining; he's my favorite film composer. Intrada's latest complete release for The Shadow is the most recent case in point of a great score that really deserved the C&C treatment.

HOWEVER...at some point soon the labels are going to run out of Goldsmith scores to "definitiveize"...right? So what's left to grab?

For the moment let's set aside all of the Varese-released 90s Goldsmith scores desperately in need of expansion, because apparently only they can do those (and frustratingly don't seem to be in any hurry to do so)....so scratch off
Timeline
Looney Tunes: Back in Action
Star Trek: Nemesis (though with Lukas Kendall and Paramount on the job maybe this one will actually come out?)
Along Came A Spider
Hollow Man
The Thirteenth Warrior
The Haunting
U.S. Marshals
Small Soldiers
L.A. Confidential (not sure about this since there seem to be other releases besides Varese)
Air Force One
Executive Decision
City Hall
Chain Reaction
Angie
Rudy
Matinee
Malice
The Public Eye
Mr. Baseball
Mom and Dad Save the World
Medicine Man
Love Field
Gremlins 2
Leviathan (1989 so not sure if this one is available to others for licensing or not...)

Yeah, Varese released a ton of Goldsmith which is now off limits...unless one of the other specialty labels somehow works out a deal with them to license stuff. Probably unlikely since they are direct competitors.

That leaves us with:
The Sum of All Fears (Elektra -- Warner Bros. Records) -- conceivably this could come from LaLaLand or possibly Intrada, but is there much of worth unreleased?

The Last Castle (Decca --> UMG) -- presumably Intrada (outside chance of LaLaLand) might snag this, and I hope they do as there is some excellent music missing including some more powerful revised film versions of key cues...

Star Trek: Insurrection (GNP) -- almost certainly forthcoming (as is McCarthy's Star Trek: Generations) from GNP themselves, so scratch that off the list.

The Mummy (Decca --> UMG) -- Intrada come to our rescue, please!

Mulan (Disney) -- if *anyone* can pull this off, it's Intrada. They have done every other Goldsmith/Disney collaboration, so it'd be fantastic if they could close the book on this for people who don't have the Academy promo...and supply some fantastic liner notes while they're at it. I hear Richard Kraft really pushed Goldsmith for this assignment and I suspect there's an interesting tale to be told about how he got the job.

Deep Rising (Hollywood Records --> Disney) -- again, not sure if this is one many would clamor for but it'd be Intrada territory only. I guess Varese has also dealt with Disney but if they can't be even bothered to release complete versions of all the great 90s scores they own perpetuity rights to why would they bother licensing this?

The Ghost and the Darkness (Hollywood Records --> Disney) -- this one really should happen and it's Intrada we have to look towards...

2 Days in the Valley (Intrada) -- this recently came out as an album assembly. If material exists for the complete score maybe someone else could release a more definitive version, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Powder (Hollywood Records --> Disney) -- yep, would have to be Intrada again, if they can work out a deal for all the Hollywood Records Goldsmith albums that'd be great!

Congo (Epic --> Sony) -- Given the pattern of releases at LaLaLand, I think this will be one of theirs.

The River Wild (RCA --> Sony) -- Likewise LaLaLand.

Dennis the Menace (Big Screen Records) -- LaLaLand has already expanded some other former Big Screen Records titles like Forever Young, and I think this one will be coming up.

Six Degrees of Separation (Elektra -- Warner Bros. Records) -- maybe LLL or Intrada?

Gladiator (rejected) -- Since Intrada put out 2 Days in the Valley maybe they'll tackle this too?

Basic Instinct (Varese/Prometheus) -- For some reason Varese must not have gotten rights to this in perpetuity, as Prometheus was able to release an expanded version. Not sure how much better this could be done by LLL or Intrada but I wager at least the liner notes could be improved.

The Russia House (MCA --> UMG) -- Goldsmith famously already considering this album way too long, but presumably Intrada could give it a sonic upgrade, fill in the few bits of missing score, and get Jeff Bond to write some great liner notes...not a huge priority but I could see another version of this coming out.

Warlock (Intrada) -- not sure how much more score there is but I would guess Intrada would eventually get around to reissuing this...

Criminal Law (Varese 1988), Wall Street (Varese 1987) -- would anyone want a new version of these?

Lionheart (Masters Film Music/Varese) -- I'm almost positive that Robert Townson still owns the rights to this since there's the "Deluxe Edition" on iTunes combining both of the previous volumes. It'd be nice if Varese put this out complete, remastered, in film order (with the repeat taken out) and provide it with good liner notes.

Link -- Intrada put out the most recent version of this, which sold out very fast, but it was just the original album program and I think there's a foot warmer that's longer if someone can finagle an official release

Hoosiers -- Intrada has already said they're working on this

Rambo: First Blood Part II -- Obviously it would be great if Intrada could complete the trilogy of definitive re-issues. There are a few bits missing on the Silva including the orchestral end credits. If the tapes and rights can be figured out I'm sure Intrada will do it.

Legend -- How much more music is there missing?

Supergirl -- I could see LLL or Intrada giving this the "Poltergeist treatment"

The Lonely Guy (MCA --> UMG) -- An odd case; this one's been released on LP and cassette but not CD! I'm sure someone will get around to it to plug the hole in people's Goldsmith collections but I'm not sure people are beating down doors to get this.

Under Fire -- complete score is lost...at least for now. Maybe a rerecording?

Psycho II (MCA --> UMG) -- I'll eat my hat if Intrada doesn't get this out eventually. Or maybe Varese will shock everyone and stick it in a batch.

The Secret of NIMH -- I don't understand why an expanded version of this isn't out already, honestly. The sound could use an upgrade and there's some great unreleased music!

The Salamander -- tapes are (tragically) lost...here's hoping Prometheus funds a Tadlow-produced complete re-recording for this masterpiece

Raggedy Man -- anything missing? Varese might have first dibs.

Caboblanco -- does someone know if anything is missing from the Prometheus? If so and if tapes survive this could be do for a re-do.

The Swarm -- I could see Intrada/LLL doing a two disc set with the complete score remastered and the original album program on the second disc (since many find it superior)...and fresh notes of course.

The Omen Trilogy -- I wonder if Varese owns the rights to these because of their Deluxe Editions...they've probably got The Final Conflict tied up, at any rate. But perhaps Intrada or LLL could do improved versions of the first two scores (the first was missing some music; not sure about the second but the sound could probably be improved a bit). Still, the DEs are excellent so these aren't a high priority.

Twilight's Last Gleaming -- I can see this getting a remastered reissue but apparently only a little music is missing.

MacArthur (MCA --> UMG) -- Intrada would be most likely to reissue/expand this.

High Velocity -- I LOVE this unheralded gem! Joel Goldsmith produced the album for Prometheus in the 90s, and frankly it *feels* like there's music missing but I've never bothered to watch the film -- can anyone say for sure? And I wonder if any extra music survives...

Damnation Alley -- Until someone either finds or re-records the missing synth parts, this will remain unreleased. If the former occurs, this'll probably come out on Varese.

Contract on Cherry Street -- Another of my favorite unknown Goldsmith gems; anyone know if Prometheus put out the complete score?

The Reincarnation of Peter Proud -- I feel sure that either Varese or Intrada will put this one out. Not sure what the hold up is.

Ransom -- Presumably the complete score is lost and the LP tracks as released by Prometheus are all that's available. Not sure if there's be enough interest in a complete re-recording of this one either.

Did Goldsmith actually write anything for Archer or Adam of Eagle Lake, or is it just an IMDb/Soundtrack Collector goof?

QBVII -- One of my absolute favorite Goldsmith scores and the existing LP program is woefully incomplete (I think it may actually be a re-recording anyway). According to the folks at Intrada the original tapes for this are lost so unless they miraculously turn up we just have to hound James Fitzpatrick to re-record the whole thing. At one point he seemed open to the idea, even after he'd said the Tadlow label was ceasing. Maybe a Prometheus release?

Indict and Convict -- anyone familiar with this?

Chinatown -- after Varese sells out on their current run of 3000 I suspect one of our other fine labels will actually provide a definitive version.

Shamus -- if the tapes survive I think Intrada will get around to it.

The Red Pony -- we all know the tapes survive so why hasn't Varese or someone put this out in official form yet?

Papillion -- I'm hoping to get a truly complete release from Intrada with great liner notes.

The Don Is Dead -- obscure but if the tapes survive I'm sure it'll come out.

Barnaby Jones and The Waltons -- apparently none of this material survives aside from the Walton pilot which FSM released. frown

Pursuit -- unreleased save for one track re-recorded by Silva. I have a feeling we'll see the rest if the tapes survive.

The Other -- as...others...have noted this cries out for a complete release; perhaps there's some issue with the tapes?

The Man -- now that Paramount has opened up I'm surprised we haven't seen this; again, perhaps the tapes haven't been located yet.

The Mephisto Waltz -- I think this could still be expanded a bit and don't think Varese have dibs...

The Last Run -- won't happen; according to Lukas himself the tapes are lost

Do Not Fold, Spindle, or Mutilate / Crawlspace -- any idea if these tapes survive?

The Chairman -- supposedly the complete score hasn't survived the ages...

Sebastian -- a couple years ago Lukas said this was coming out from someone (not FSM)...I wonder what the hold-up is?

Our Man Flint / In Like Flint -- the Varese release was not complete; does anyone know if they somehow maintain rights to this? If not I hope Intrada gives them the Patton treatment, with the complete film recordings AND the complete LP recordings (which have never been released on CD)

Hour of the Gun -- Doug Fake himself on the Intrada board said the complete score is over 50 minutes, there is good stuff missing, and he'd love to release it...if only there were tapes to be had (and there aren't!) Also, the existing album according to him is a re-recording, not the film tracks.

The Trouble With Angels -- Hope one of our labels isn't turned off by the Harkit release and tackles this little gem.

In Harm's Way -- when Intrada reissued this they said they searched at Paramount but could find no other score material beyond the existing album.

Seven Days in May -- Hoping someone puts this out, paired with the rejected Amram score and perhaps some other goodies to fill out the disc.

Fate Is the Hunter -- as with most things on the set, Varese supposedly released all surviving material on their Goldsmith at Fox box.

Take Her, She's Mine -- not sure how many would be interested but if tapes survive I'd buy it!

The List of Adrian Messenger -- I still hold out hope that Varese will put this out as a Club release sooner or later, as they did all the others from Goldsmith's early years at Universal.

Lilies of the Field -- is there anything else that isn't on the album recently reissued by Perseverance?

Crime Busters, Catch it on the Wing, The Best Years, The People Next Door, The Expendables -- Anyone know anything about these from the early 60s? They show up on Soundtrack Collector but I've never heard of them.

The General With the Cockeyed Id -- anyone know the status of tapes on this?

Black Patch/Face of a Fugitive -- his first and third feature scores, both westerns (a genre he excelled in); would make a great double header as a re-recording, since I suspect the original tracks no longer survive. But you never know...they might be in somebody's closet. Doug Fake after all saved City of Fear and Studs Lonigan!

And now we finally come to all the great TV work he did in the 50s (I think most of his 60s/70s episodic TV work has been released; please correct me if I'm wrong). My hope for this was actually Prometheus, because of their wonderful early Jerry Goldsmith television scores release, tantalizingly labeled "Volume One"...but they don't seem to be doing anything besides re-recordings these days so I wonder if someone else will pick up the slack and save more Goldsmith TV gems?

As you can see as I go further and further back it's a lot more up in the air about what even survives to release. Also, usually if Intrada, FSM, or LaLaLand put out a release, we can assume it's the complete score. Not so with Varese or sometimes, Prometheus. So some of you will have to fill me in on whether there's any point in including some of the titles in this list. I will modify it based on your feedback.

Yavar

Did you just list all older Goldsmith releases regardless if they are complete or not?
The Varese release of Malice and Epic`s Congo for example seem to be pretty complete. At least I didn`t notice any omnissions when I last watched the 2 films.

Just watched Malice the other day and there is indeed some missing stuff. Not all of it necessary, but I mean, we got a complete Forever Young and Sleeping With The Enemy, didn't we?

The non-official 2 Days In The Valley was chronological, and the Intrada is not (that's the other "C" in "C&C"). Other than that, I think it has everything. Also of note is that both the non-legal version and the Intrada use the track titles I made up. So that's cool, I guess.

REINCARNATION OF PETER PROUD--I thought some people on this forum have declared this score lost?

TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING--I'm fairly sure the existing CD is complete

HOOSIERS--Wasn't this also declared lost?

LINK--Again, I believe Intrada said the session masters are lost when they put out their CD. Not much missing anyway.

CRIMINAL LAW--I think the existing CD is complete

Twilight isn't complete but close and I believe it was all they could find (I think Joel had been holding onto the tapes that resulted in the previous release)
