Then there are all those Italian shock documentaries which many of us know, Morricone Ortaliani, and company gave us some very good scores with pretty themes.

The Cinerama travelogues (and WINDJAMMER) have good scores, if you want to consider them to be documentaries.

Of the mainstream Hollywood composers, Elmer Bernstein supplied the music for lots of TV documentaries but not all that many have been recorded. - James. Bernstein also did GENOCIDE, a feature documentary that did have a recording.

Here's a couple I'd love to get: Ilan Eshkeri's score to "Colosseum: A Gladiator's Story" (aka Colosseum: Rome's Arena of Death) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=surnDV-u0f4 ... you'll clearly notice from where he got his ideas for Stardust ... I think I like this one better than Stardust, actually. Richard Blair-Oliphant's score to "When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buuxhrIwd-0 ...and the intro, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdaRVgwEQ1c ... probably, or clearly inspired (or 'ripoff', call it what you want) of Transformers, but if anything, I find this perhaps better... (Not looking for this though, but) Don Davis' score to "Space Odyssey: Voyage To The Planets" is not so bad either, has a nice main theme anyway, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPBjG_2z_Ak

I think The Fog War by Philip Glass, is the best doc score I've ever heard. It MAKES the entire movie.

Paul Smith was Oscar-nominated for his score for the Disney feature, PERRI, which was pretty much a documentary. He also wrote great scores for other Disney nature films, like THE LIVING DESERT, THE VANISHING PRAIRIE, SECRETS OF LIFE, as well as scores for nature-related short subjects, as did other Disney in-house composers like Oliver Wallace. And there are also classic Virgil Thompson scores for THE RIVER and THE PLOW THAT BROKE THE PLAINS, back in the 30's. And Aaron Copland also wrote scores for documentaries. Even Miklos Rozsa wrote a score for a Frank Buck jungle travelogue, called JACARE, which actually isn't bad. (Found it on VHS on one of those public-domain film sites.) And, of course, we cannot forget Bernard Herrmann's WILLIAMSBURG:THE STORY OF A PATRIOT, which, I understand, is still being exhibited there. (Not to mention the sterling re-recording from Messers. Stromberg/Morgan & Co....)
