As designer emeritus (and longtime pal of the producer) I had the privilege and pleasure to pay a visit to the Intrada sound studio in Oakland last week for a preview of their latest re-recording. Doug had just completed the transfers of the best takes and was pretty excited to share the results.

Wow.

I didn’t know Black Patch at all, but the architecture of the score is pretty impressive, right from the unused WB shield music that starts the ball rolling. I wasn’t surprised to hear so many tinges of Herrmann, since he would have been a contemporary influence on Jerry. But I was pleasantly surprised how GOLDSMITHIAN the whole thing sounded. He really dropped into feature scoring well on his way, if not quite fully formed. Bill Stromberg brought a very authentic sound to the re-recording.

I was much more familiar with The Man, which I taped off of a ‘70s TV broadcast. I always adored the power of the score, which belied its short running time. The use of snare drums harkened back to Seven Days in May, and the brass is pretty challenging at times. I wondered how the re-recording would fare? I’m here to tell you that the Scots NAILED their performance, and I’d argue that they pulled off a few bars even better than the original.

I don’t know exactly when this release will be ready, and I’m sorry you couldn’t be there to hear it on those studio monitors (which I gather cost more than a couple of new cars) but I suspect the album is going to be worth the wait!

Thanks to all the supporters, and especially thanks to Doug Fake and co. for doing such a first rate job. We are in your debt.

Same here. Contributed purely on faith in the Goldsmith fans and Goldsmith himself and I’m looking forward to it!

Did Jerry Goldsmith score Candy Crush?

I can confidently say this is my favorite new Goldsmith recording since Intrada's 1989 LSO recording of Rio Conchos and The Artist Who Did Not Want to Paint. (I'm super grateful for the Tadlows, especially The Salamander and QBVII... but this is even better!)

I can't wait for everyone else to hear this wonderful album too, but until then, here's something to tide you over!

https://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/9988703-production-report-black-patch-the-man-2021-intrada-recording

This was recorded a mere three weeks after the October sessions in Scotland, with guests Douglass Fake, Roger Feigelson, and Jeff Johnson of Intrada, plus reconstructionist extraordinaire Leigh Phillips and conductor William Stromberg. I planned it as a two hour conversation but everyone was having such a great time talking about the recording that it grew into over three hours, with the third hour having some of the most fun exchanges between everyone. At the time we recorded this, David and I hadn't heard any of the new recording beyond what was shared on social media, so we couldn't call this a Soundtrack Spotlight. But we ended up waiting until January to edit this behemoth, so we were able to incorporate substantial excerpts of the new recording throughout!

I hope everyone enjoys this one-of-a-kind look behind the scenes of a monumental new Goldsmith recording.

We at The Goldsmith Odyssey did a silly little 8 minute thing to promote Intrada’s new Kickstarter: https://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/9022000-support-goldsmith-on-kickstarter

Hope folks have fun with it and share it if they do!

Scott, you can hear 21 minutes of Companions in Nightmare here: https://youtu.be/9xVNaFSLHQI

Pretty funny , Yvar! Appropriate that you guys did your own tribute to this Kickstarter.

BTW Has anyone mentioned both these scores will probably have a bigger orchestra for these two films than the originals. BLACK PATCH was a pretty low budget independent film picked up by WB and THE MAN was made as a TV movie when those budgets were limited.

And “QB VII” was the most expensive television miniseries up to that time and in order to reduce the budget Goldsmith recorded the score with the Rome Symphony Orchestra (the same one used in “Papillion”).

Amazing work here Yavar, thanks!
I'm in the middle of the listening and this episode is really wonderfull. Your passion for Goldsmith's music with all the care and work you and David do while producing these amazing podcast episodes really shines on this one.

This is awesome, much-appreciated Yavar!

Just playing the opening, the music sounds wonderful, particularly that harp. You can really hear the room tone and sense of space which made me wonder what the musicians were thinking knowing they're playing music from a 50+ year old project that likely hasn't been performed since first released.

Looking forward to listening to the whole thing!

Actually that opening cue is from The Man, so just under 50 years old... but it's getting there! And hard to believe that we are approaching the 65th anniversary of Jerry’s Goldsmith’s very first film score…

Glad you're both liking this, and thanks for writing the kind words. Please feel free to share any further thoughts after you finish listening.

I'm taking down notes as I listen but one of the most prescient quotes was I think Jeff's reconsideration that perhaps he doesn't dislike early Jerry Goldsmith but rather the original recording quality themselves.

I described something similar with Golden Age scores and noticed the most incredible presentation was for THE MALTESE FALCON, which sound very tinny and dated on film but in the re-recording just absolutely explodes with brilliance and excitement.

Recently I finally clicked with Rozsa whom I had never really liked or understood before, and it was from a re-recording of IVANHOE and EL CID. Even his Graunke Symphony Orchestra re-recording was sparkling.

But accuracy is important in these cases as something as simple as phrasing can enliven a song or dull it out.

One of your best episodes so far. Indeed the stories (and "outakes" at the end) on the final part are great.

Actually I think that might have been Leigh Phillips! Somewhat surprising revelation from him considering the labor of love he's had restoring all of those Thriller scores from 1961... Black Patch was only four years prior!

Fantastic episode. The anticipation for this release keeps building and I’m salivating at the prospect of getting my copy. Great discussion. Incredibly entertaining and informative. I hope that team will work again on another Goldsmith Kickstarter at some point. Well done all.

Thank you! It's a real boon when everybody is just so cheerful, and that was certainly the case. Good group, and as you can tell, they seemed to think so, too. That's pretty encouraging.

This could be the start of a beautiful friendship.
