Thanks. :-)

Okay, we're about at the half-way point of the year, so here is some talk about suites to come:

Obviously the two more "Korg: 70,000 B.C." suites.
"T.J. Hooker".
"Falcon's Crest".
Cop shows.
Six John Cacavas suites from three projects.
More "J.J. Starbuck" (covering most, but not all the show) and more "240-Robert".
"Serpico" suites.
Morton Stevens once a month all the way to November.
A Canadian composer, ay.
Ron Goodwin.
Contio, and more. Can't give it all away.

This week's meaty suites.

Fugitive Family
Composer: Morton Stevens
https://youtube.com/watch?v=NR0d3iMvUo4

Suite #1 (or two) covering the TV movie.

"The Virginian"
Episode: "All Nice and Legal"
Composer: Nathan van Cleave
https://archive.org/details/the-virginian-score-suite-1-van-cleave

Suite #1 (or two) covering the only episode of the series he scored.

Normally I would cite Fair Use is that the video is transformational of the material from the episode, but I think this score fits another Fair Use mention: educational. I think wannabe composers should study this score.

This delightful score, which features a six/seven-note bouncy main theme with two or three resolutions (or answers as Shirley Walker called them), and a descending two-note climbing menacing motif on brass for the bad guys. So many wonderful variations, engaging music, catchy memorable pieces. Truly one of the best scores of the series.

Like the "Gunsmoke" episode score "Major Glory", this episode was recorded far in advance. In fact, while going through all the season three track-job episodes to find tracked pieces, I found myself sad, because a beautiful piece of a cue -- maybe about twenty seconds of it -- with sorrowful/sad work, was still covered in dialogue and nowhere to be found in the track-job episodes. At the last minute I decided: What if it was recorded earlier like "Major Glory" and was also tracked in episodes prior to "All Nice and Legal"? Sure enough, I go back and check and it's all ALL the track job episodes, even at the start of the season (sessions for the episodes scores must have taken place right before season three started, I would guess). And low and behold, right there in an earlier track-job episode -- BOOM! -- the missing sad music, CLEAN. And thanks to earlier track-job episodes, I was able to make other cues cleaner and salvage more cues. No score was found tracked in season four; doesn't mean it won't show up later in the series (some scores did), but right now I have only gone to the end of season five.

And in the track-job episodes I found score that was dropped from "All Nice and Legal", but since it was dropped, I was only able to use parts of them (one long-ish cue was talked over and almost completely unusable). I would guess that Cleave recorded somewhere from thirty to forty minutes of score.

I sincerely hope you all love this like I do. Enjoy! A shit-ton of work went into this!

Just listened to the Virginian suite, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Posted a positive review on Internet Archive.

What to expect from next week's suites (I have no idea what day they will be posted):

The second suite for Cleave's score to "The Virginian".
And a suite from John Cacavas from a TV series.

This week's suites.

"Jessie"
Composer: John Cacavas
https://youtube.com/watch?v=8xDqjQn-ink

This was a short-lived cop show from 1984 that centered around a female police psychologist. You'd be surprised how often a police department needs a psychologist when the show centers around one.

It's not a bad show, but it is rather boring. But that didn't stop "Kojak" from running for several years, so...

This is the first of three suites. I have no intention at this time to cover the whole series (which isn't even possible -- only most of it is up right now).

This suite covers the feature-length pilot.

"The Virginian"
Composer: Nathan van Cleave
https://archive.org/details/the-virginian-score-suite-2-van-cleave

This is the second and final suite covering the one episode he scores for the show.

This suite opens with the bouncy and whimsical music for the old lady as she is having help moving things in. In the episode it is covered with dialogue and some FX, here I was able to salvage most of it.

See you the first week of July for the final special wester suite (that one will also be from a long-running series...).

What to expect from next week's suites (I haven no idea what day they will be posted as of yet):

The heat is on with "T.J. Hooker".
And another Mike Post & Pete Carpenter suite. If Mike wants to stand in the way of releases of his music, I'll just rectify that by having a suite of his work every single month for the foreseeable years.

My vehicle was hit by another vehicle this morning. I have no idea what my future holds and if I'll be able to maintain doing suites. I have a number in the can yet to be posted, but I have no idea if I'll be around to post them in the future.

For those curious about the details:
I was driving the speed limit on a two lane road. A vehicle in a turning lane pulled out right in front of me. Unobstructed in broad daylight.

I veered right, he hit me -- he didn't even try to brake. I quickly reacted by veering further into a business lot and the whole time he's still plowing into me. He wouldn't fucking stop.

He initially appears to want to flee. A witness steps forward and helps.
The driver didn't call the police. Wouldn't call the police. Tried to flee the scene of the crime until the witness told him he photographed the license plate.

Even though I got hit on the front, I still have my turn signal and headlight working. Bad damage, steering is acting up and pulling to a side, and I have had trouble starting it twice now.

For those who care: I don't think I am injured. But I have been feeling bad for over two months now, so who knows.

This week's suites.

"T.J. Hooker"
Composer: Mark Snow
https://archive.org/details/tjhokr-score-suite-1-mark-snow

Suite #1, covering the feature-length pilot.

"The Rousters"
Composers: Mike Post & Pete Carpenter
https://youtube.com/watch?v=bADTQ0tvnfI

Suite #4, covering the final episodes of the short-lived spin-off series. The fifth and final suite will cover the pilot.

"The Warden"
Composer: Bernard Herrmann
https://youtube.com/watch?v=WxhYBWESdOk

Now, this should be a treat for you.

As it is June -- the month he was born in, I decided to have a suite honoring him. Hey, did you know (I didn't) that he was born "Maximillian Herman"???

If you look over his body of work, most of it has had a release of some form or another. It's only when you get down to his television series, pilots, and radio work you start finding unreleased scores.

For many fans I suspect this will be a new discovery. This was an obscure failed pilot that wasn't even listed on IMDb until the pilot popped up on YouTube and I added it to IMDb.

A black and white prison drama pilot where the warden takes unusual steps to try and reform prisoners.

I added most of the crew, and all of the cast, so if you want to know more, see the IMDb page:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt27790804/fullcredits

Sorry Justin to read your bad experience on the road with this "attack" on your car. Hope everything will be handled by insurance compagnies. Main issue is to be uninjured. Keep well. We still need you badly!

Thanks for the kind words here and those who e-mailed me privately.

So far I can only move at the speed of my insurance company, which has been slow and barely at all.

Accident happened early Thursday morning. I was online two hours later filling the claim. Waited on e-mail as long as I could that day -- no response.

Friday I worked, got online late for one hour -- just a PDF file telling me they received the claim and were processing it.

Saturday and Sunday: closed.

Monday: No response.

Today: As of right now, still no response.

The bad rain blew my headlight. Let me tell you, if you have no experienced it before, there's nothing quite as scary as driving and hearing a pop and seeing smoke from the front of your vehicle.

I'm still recording audio for suites just incase everything pans out okay. Just yesterday, recording work by Stu Phillips (hopefully have them out August and September).

This week's suites.
And a tad about next week's suites.

"Korg: 70,000 B.C."
Composer: Hoyt Curtin
https://youtube.com/watch?v=Ig2sWgm3B3Y

Suite #2 (of three) covering the series.

"Jessie"
Composer: John Cacavas
https://youtube.com/watch?v=eoTpQaeLnk8

Suite #2 (of three made suites; maybe next year I'll do another).

Next week, as previously hunted about weeks ago, I premiere the third and final special western score, where I did the same thing I did with that episode of "The Virginian". Like I said, this one ws from a long-running western. So the ne bit of information: Morton Stevens.

At this time I have no idea what day they will be posted. I can say for sure it won't be July 4th.

Apparent final update on my wreck and insurance woes, for those who care. Got the following today from my insurance company:

Given there is no coverage on your policy to repair the damages to your vehicle,I cannot be certain what the next best steps are for you. It is entirely up to you with regards to how you proceed with the repairs to your vehicle as well as the recovery of your out of pocket expense.

Yeah, the guy lied and had no current insurance. And there you have it. No savings -- can't make repairs.

Front left wheel is out of alignment.
Large part of the bumper is missing.
Headlight assembly is damaged and thus because of the rain, blew the headlight. New headlight assembly can run around $200 with taxes. Cheaper used on eBay, but I don't know anybody in the family with an eBay account.
Severe starting problems. Spending fifteen to thirty-five minutes each time starting my car. That'll eventually stop working, or I'll break the starter in the process of clicking it over and over and over again.

The part-time work I have and took me two years to land -- that requires having my own vehicle; public transportation does not work for it. Looks like I'll lose the work, too.

Sue him? He didn't have insurance, he'll probably not have money to go after. It costs about $200 just to file and get into Small Claims Court. And all you get is a judgment -- it's on me to collect.

This week's suites. With bonus third suite.

"Gunsmoke"
Composer: Morton Stevens
https://archive.org/details/gunsmoke-major-glory-score-suite-morton-stevens
Temporary video file download link: https://gofile.io/d/jKSpRy

This super special suite covers Mort's Emmy-winning score to the episode "Major Glory".

Like I did for the previous suites that started off May and June, I used cleaner tracked parts to fixed bad ones, to salvage the score.

Luckily for fans, this score was tracked a lot in various track-job and even original score efforts episodes of the TV series "Cimarron Strip" -- probably do in no small part to Mort being the music supervisor on the series. Then it was also tracked into two or three episodes of the TV series "The Wild Wild West". Mort also scored episodes as well. And one or more episodes also tracked score from the "Gunsmoke" episode: "Cattle Barons" (I didn't know go around looking for that; maybe next year!).

One thing became clear while working on this score: good parts of the episode edited up and tracked score, suggesting that part of or even entire cues were simply dropped from the episode, meaning there is a good deal of material out there to surprise us if and when some label handles the score.

The entire build to Festus fighting in the bar in the open, it edited up tracked material from the later action cue (which in turn appears to not be heard in full). And the instrumental arrangement of My Eyes Have Seen the Glory (or: Battle Hymn of the Republic), I don't even think is by Stevens -- I think it's tracked from another episode or even another series. For the sake of listeners, I have kept the edit work and tracked piece and tried to clean them up some.

One cue has an open not heard in the episode, which I got from
"Cimarron Strip"
. But I can't say if that's dropped score, or a clever edit job, but I kept it.

One cue has an ending not heard in the episode (the episode cuts off for commercial break) which I got from another TV series. I can't say if that's how the cue is supposed to end or if it is a clever edit job and from the other TV series. I kept it because it works and I really don't know anyway!

Some score was slowed down or sped up, and even keys changed in editorial from other series, which I had to try and fix best I could, but I am using Audacity -- not a professional program for quality studio editing work, so the drop in sound quality will be evident. Apologies -- I did what I could.

This represents a lot of work. I hope people appreciate this. It will have to do until one day some label makes this a reality.

Of note: the first [known] episode of "The Wild Wild West" that used score from this episode, aired about a month before "Major Glory" did, suggesting Mort recorded his score some time in advance. I suppose the CBS Finding Aide Collection might note a recording date, but I'm not hunting that down.

OCTOBER 18, 2023 UPDATE: I learned after-the-fact that score from this episode was tracked into another episode he scored, "Cattle Barons". Had I know this, I could have made some cues better in parts. Oh well.

"J.J. Starbuck"
Composer: Mike Post
https://youtube.com/watch?v=LvWiTqvKMkM

Suite #1 (of two) covering the feature-length pilot.

"My Island Family"
Composer: George Duning
https://youtube.com/watch?v=zlGoerBVR6g

Selections from what used to be a super obscure pilot that didn't even have an IMDb page, until a few weeks ago when it suddenly popped up on YouTube. I of course added the IMDb page and full cast and select crew credits.

Hey Justin,

Thanks for the great job on MAJOR GLORY. It has always been a favorite of mine. I do appreciate all your efforts in putting this together for us to enjoy. This has some really fine brass work by Mort.

I think it would take a miracle for some label to release this score. In the meantime, the suite that you put together is just fantastic and I thank you once again!:-)

This week's suites.

"Brass"
Composer: Joe Sherman
https://youtube.com/watch?v=xU9cKuF7fSU

This was a failed feature-length pilot from the '80's that starred Carol O'Connor.

Sherman has contributed about a dozen scores in the last few years of "In the Heat of the Night" and obviously Carol must have been a fan or just liked the guy. Who knows.

"Dallas"
Composer: Jerrold Immel
https://archive.org/details/dlls-score-suite-1-jerrold-immel

Suite #1 covering must, if not all, the episodes he scored in season one.
