I pretty much ripped through this series (2) in the past week. I watched the first 4 eps in about 24 hours, then finished the last 4 over a few days. Despite some flaws and issues, I still think there's so much more to enjoy, than to hate. As noted pretty much everywhere, the production values and music are top-notch and a big reason why I enjoy it and return to it. The acting can be a bit...aloof/pompous and stilted, together with the script, but I suppose that's in keeping with the way Tolkien wrote it and the places/times it projects. I was a bit shocked by some of the violence in this series. It seemed a bit OTT at times, when compared to S1 and felt more like trying to keep up with GAME OF THRONES style gore/bloodletting (obviously this show doesn't have the sadistic sexual violence the GRR Martin show wallowed in). I'm not sure I enjoyed this series as much as S1, but it was close enough, level-wise, for me to still have a really good time. AND THE MUSIC!!! WOW!!! Up there with the best we are hearing these days and on a level with the GRAND stuff of olde. I really hope they repeat the CD release pattern of the first series. One thing that bugged me... SPOILER!!! (I thought I saw Arondir get killed in ep7 only for him to be leaping about in ep8...I don't quite get the whole Elf immortal thing. Bear in mind I'm a casual fan...never read the books...enjoyed the first 3 Jackson films...hated the HOBBIT ones).

Another thing that seemed a bit more pronounced in this series was the OTT pronunciations, whenever a character mentioned a certain name or place. The amount of times I tittered when someone would say 'MORRRRDORRRRR' or 'CELEBRIMMBORRRRRRRR' etc

I suppose another thing that hampers this show - it being a prequel series - is the lack of danger many characters exist within, since we know their characters survived in the future tales that have been told. They may as well just stick any disposable 'new characters' in a red shirt

If the music from this series is being judged as a 'tuneless mess', there is no hope. Fortunately, that quote sounds like click bait from those ten-a-penny internet reviewers who need hysteria to survive and thrive. Thankfully, Bear's music is being heralded in most havens of sanity.

I think I described it as "video game" music. What does that mean? Video game music is just as diverse, creative, and interesting as film and television music... perhaps even more so these days. So, if you intended it as a "shot" at McCreary's music, you failed. -Erik- It's good on the surface but meanders, there's no meat to the bones. The writing isn't as well structured as something Shore, Williams, Goldsmith, or Horner could write. (Pick any legendary composer) Hell, Randy Edelman can write better synth music. Sorry if that offends you but I stand by my opinion regardless if you think I'm taking a "shot" at the composer.

If I had to guess, this sounds like someone judging the score by listening to maybe the first half (or less) of the season 1 album. The first hour or so of that is dominated by the album versions of themes which were not scored to picture. So I could understand someone claiming that those sound like game cues, which often don’t worry about hitting onscreen action the same way that film music does. For those Bear gets to present his main melody, a B section, and a return to the main melody in a way that’s musically wonderful, but might lack the urgency of what people expect from film music since it wasn’t written to picture. Now if someone were to make that “video game music” claim about the actual episodic score albums, I’d be stumped. Doesn’t sound even remotely like it was scored for a game. (And I say that as someone who loves plenty of game scores, but just realizes that they do in fact often have different compositional parameters than film or TV scores.) Yavar
