But those library cues are some of my favorite music from the series.

Same here, Jeff!

I've only organized library music by season, but just want to say how nice it is folks are still getting a kick out of this set like I do all this time later. Seven years on and it's still a dream come true.

Slightly off topic.
Anyone else notice that CHARLIE X and WHERE NO MAN.. are basically the same plot?

I've been biding my time. smile

"Charlie X" was clearly inspired by THE TWILIGHT ZONE episode "It's a Good Life," the one with Billy Mumy as an all-powerful kid who controls a town. "Where No Man" was possibly a nod to that TZ story as well. It's unfortunate that NBC broadcast those two STAR TREK episodes back-to-back in first run.

I think NBC sent some memos to Desilu during the first season complaining about that, and also about too many episodes where one actor plays a dual role, especially an evil twin ("The Enemy Within", "The Man Trap", "What are Little Girls Made Of", and "The Alternative Factor"). NBC was not happy about so many evil twins.

So, which Gerald Fried cue is his all-time greatest Star Trek cue: "Vulcan" from Amok Time, or "Love, Sort of" from Catspaw?

Fried's best ST cue was "Death of Miramanee."

Fried's best cue was Marriage Counseling from Amok time. Spock's theme builds through the episode to this point.

It's hard to pick a favorite Fried.

Obviously Steiner and Courage set the compass for the tone of the show. Their sound is so iconic and, well, Star Trek.

But Fried... Along comes Gerald Fried and shows just how juicy fun Star Trek music can be. I always enjoyed hearing his iconic cues on the show, but it wasn't until the context of his music in this box set that I really appreciated how much he flavor he brought. I became a fan. His cues that anticipate an imminent conflict make you rub your hands together with glee, and yet he shows (with Paradise Syndrome in particular) that he can keep up with Duning and Mullendore in scoring heartfelt love stories.

Considering, over on ABC, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea was grinding that concept into the ground, I don't blame them.

Fried's "greatest" cue? All subjective. My favorite will be easily his most famous: The Ancient Combat.

I don't remember if we posted about it but someone dug up a first season memo from Bob Justman urging the production to hire Fried again in season two, remarking, "This man's music enables everything it touches." We forwarded a scan of the memo to Gerry--he'd never seen it!

That's great! I'm not as much a fan of his other scores (their good / great to be sure) but Amok Time and Friday's Child are amazing. So I'm certainly glad we got those.

Justman seems to have cared about the music more than anyone. (Although Gene put the breaks on ever having a score that sounded like Man Trap again. So that's good.)

The one I always wonder is why oh why didn't Kaplan get to do a third season score?!?

re: Sol Kaplan, I don't know why he didn't come back for season three, but I do recall reading that he was living in NY at the time, meaning he might have been more expensive than other composers (due to travel costs). Season three's budget was cut to the bone. But I don't know the real reason.

Kaplan's two scores were so damned great, it actually felt like he did more. The Doomsday Machine is a masterpiece and was tracked so often, he almost didn't need to come back.

How about a curve ball. "Godfathers" from Friday's Child. I mean its so iconic it made it into the pinball game.

The Kirk/Miramanee chase from PARADISE SYNDROME.

For me either that or "A Clue/Finnegan's Return/The Leg Trick/Dirt Trick" from Shore Leave.

And "The Ancient Combat/2nd Kroykah" has gotta be up there. C'mon.

Naaaah. Trek reused plots, but this wasn't one of them.
