Ah. Thank you. Wouldn't want to start one of them false rumors and end up facing a crowd wielding torches. eek

People complain when they're taken by surprise, too. "Why weren't there some false rumors, damn it?!"

With the infos in this thread it seems the only possibility to get the score on CD is a re-recording via crowdfunding (as suggested by Dana Wilcox). I'd back such a one for sure.

Is this something Intrada/Stromberg would consider after their DIAL M project?

Tadlow/James has expressed interest in TNOTH but I don't know if he has another re-recording project (post KING OF KINGS) on his mind nowadays...

There is a very important contributor on this board who has a strong association with THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER. Perhaps he knows something but is sworn to secrecy for the time being. I accept that because that score and the score to JOAN OF ARC are scores I would love to see recorded anew. I wouldn't want to put a new recording in jeopardy.

Only 2 holy grails left for me--TNOTH and The African Queen. The latter also had an iso track on youtube for which I was truly grateful. Alas, no longer viewable.

Letting this play straight through, even with the imperfect sound, what a musical listen it made. If there was ever a candidate for an original tracks/rerecording pairing, it's this one.

I couldn't find a suite either (I checked Fish Man, too). But there is, how ever, several short clips of his score.

The YT video above doesn't play for you? Or are you talking about African Queen?

Well, now we know what we're missing! I've heard about acetates for this existing for years, and also about them apparently being water-damaged. You would think we'd have the A.I. audio technology by now to get most of this up to snuff--still amazing to finally hear it without dialogue although it seems at least some of this is from an M&E track (probably the better-sounding stuff!).

I had taped copies of the acetates, which were in pretty rough shape, and were missing the section of the children drifting down the river; which someone supplemented with the cut from the record album. I knew someone who claimed to have the 35mm optical M&E tracks and advised Lukas when he was interested in the score - but the owner claimed they had been ruined in a flood.

Thank you for this post. What a gift. We can hope that somehow it gets cleaned up and released. Who cares if it is only 37 minutes. I've waited 66 years for it. I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I wonder if acetates (when new) were what Laughton used for his narration album, but no longer exist, at least not in good condition.
Interesting that the track with Mitchum singing is from the acetates, not the MFX. I would have thought it would only be on the dialog or MFX track. The MFX track version has additional effects like a barking dog.

As I said earlier, the acetates are not only in bad shape but incomplete. Missing a good deal of the score. I have what there is - it's about twenty-five minutes. Those could, I think, be cleaned up these days, but then you have to have the M&E if there even IS an M&E that's proper and would work. Then you have to deal with MGM/UA AND Sony, and Sony doesn't seem to be licensing anything, even now.

Bruce, you don't think the music/effects track on the Arrow blu-ray is music/effects? Was it a foreign language dubbing track, and that is not the same as music/effects?

Definitely not. Acetates were only used for recording stage reference.

Do we know what Laughton used? I know some of it seems to be music-only. The question has been asked in the past, but I don't recall if any info was known. Noone has said the recording still exists.

I have no way of knowing what they used, only that it is unusable for CD release for the reasons you've read earlier in this thread.

I am not giving up hope until I hear from "someone" that a new recording is not in their plans anymore.

Hey Bruce, by reasons stated earlier, are you talking about legal hoops - "you have to deal with Sony on the LP and then the studio on the actual tracks."
Are you referring to the Laughton album? And because Sony had rights to that, that they must have a seat at the table? Even if the blu-ray MFX has nothing to do with the Laughton album?
FYI if you played the blu-ray and toggle between movie and MFX audio, you can tell it is music/effects, no dialog. It is complete except for a minute in two scenes where music was reused from elsewhere.
