Does anybody else hear Seconds in the theme? Dan YES (especially the "Icy Ascent" track)! Glad I'm not the only one to hear it. Also consider the main theme (first and last tracks) of Michael Lewis' "Theatre of Blood."

Bumping this, because it is one of my all-time favourite Williams scores. The theme is definitely one of his best, but as with many Williams scores, the theme especially shines in the many arrangements and adaptations it gets throughout the score. The actual film score is even better than the rerecorded album score (and , if I remember correctly, loses somewhat of that 'dated' sound, which is far less dated than most of Goldsmith's 80s or 90 synths by the way). The film itself is good, nothing special though, but worth watching just for the music. In fact, it's probably the only DVD I ever bought for the music alone. Is there any possibility for a complete/expanded release? I wouldn't mind a rerecording either!

Since June 8th, 2001, I have upgraded to the Varese CD. I put the one on in the car a few weeks ago. I've always liked it. But I don't think it needs expansion. As an album, it's just fine as it is. And the "Fifty Miles Of Desert" track was definitely missing from the UK video cassette release.

As a movie, is it really any worse than a lot of the other stuff Eastwood did in the '70s/'80s? It's certainly a film that requires a tongue-in-cheek mood, a bit of a 'ladflick'. But so were all those (in my view much worse) monkey comedies etc. other quite fine and well regarded ones like Coogan's Bluff, and even 'Misty'. The thing was about fun, despite all the 'tension'. No great film, but better than many more lauded films of the time. It never asked to be taken 'seriously'.

Another well thought out, insightful post. trivia note: Jack Cassidy was originally a singer; an "Irish Tenor". When he performed his piano accompaniment was provided by: BRuce R. Marshall senior (my dad, George!)

probably the worst film Eastwood ever did (i confess to never having seen THE ROOKIE or CITY HEAT) THE ROOKIE is a charming little action movie. I like it a lot. Great perfomances by all involved. And sadly one of the last movies of Raul Julia. Sadly, there seems to be no DVD avaiable (at least not in Germany). Guilty pleasure material. I remember when it came out thinking "not another buddy cop movie". Clint was'is above that sort of formula crap.

As for THE ROOKIE, it is indeed formula crud, but I enjoyed it anyway because of Eastwood's presence, excellent photography and stunts, a hip score from Lennie Niehaus, and a great scenery-chewing villainous performance from Raul Julia. Lots of fun stuff to be had in the film if you can wade through the cliches. A guilty pleasure for sure, but not the bottom of the barrel by any means.
