Traditionalists, of course, will only like what they know and condemn anything that challenges it.

Challenges it? HA!!!

Traditionalists can't wait to hear how much you LOVE what J.J. did to your favorite sci-fi-movie franchise . . .

From the director of "FAST AND FURIOUS".

Well it could have been worse, they could have gotten the director of "The Final Frontier".

Would that they did! For all its flaws, FINAL FRONTIER had a greater degree of actual, authentic TREK drama than just about anything before or since.

Good job ScottDS, I think it works much better with the score than the song.

"See! Into Darkness isn't the worst Star Trek movie" - Simon Pegg (Summer 2016)

This is accurate because Into Darkness already isn't the worst Star Trek movie.

Everyone keep in mind that the trailer was put together by a) Paramount's marketing department, not the filmmakers, and b) probably includes a track that has absolutely nothing to do with the movie itself, and is sequenced in a way that says nothing about the storyline.

As has been said already, Kirk listened to Beastie Boys in the 2009 reboot film. It's already established that he likes that song.

Also, it is the song Young Kirk is listening to in the beginning of the first Trek movie after stealing the car.

MV

Its also a jab at Shatner

I think the use of the Beastie Boys song for the trailer is an awful decision. Yes, it's a reference to what young Kirk was listening to in the first film but why take that few seconds of incidental music and use it as a signature for this new movie. The song served as a sort of character building moment to get across that Kirk was a rebellious young gun. But Kirk is supposed to be maturing beyond that now. And that brings up the second problem. Star Trek is NOT only about Kirk. Its about mankind and this particular group of humans on a five year mission to explore strange new worlds.... you know the rest. So why use a song that is all about Kirk to represent the bigger concept of Star Trek? Why? Pandering to the mass audience. They didn't have use any existing Star Trek music but they could have used something more grand which embodied the spirit of what this movie is supposed to be about. I like the imagery and I think there is a good movie there (let's hope) but the trailer is all wrong. I await someone posting a Youtube edit with different music. I guarantee it would give it a completely different tone.

Guardians of the Galaxy marketing strategy at work here. Simple as that.

Yep. A while back Pegg said in an interview that the studio bosses want Star Trek to make the kind of money the Marvel movies make. I guess the answer is to turn Kirk into Star-Lord.

That's the only explanation for such a wrong headed trailer. I think he's sincere and didn't like the trailer anymore than most of us did.

It was very action packed. I was…it was surprising. I found it to be kind of…the marketing people sort of saying ‘everybody come and see this film, it’s full of action and fun’, when there’s a lot more to it than that. I didn’t love it, because I know there’s a lot more to the film. There’s a lot more story, and a lot more character stuff, and a lot more of what I would call ‘Star Trek stuff.’ But, you know, they’ve got to bring a big audience in, they’ve got to bang the drum. So to Star Trek fans, I’d say hang in there, be patient.

I believe him!

Yeah, as hard as it is to do so, I would say to not give up on this. Trailers are often handled outside the studio, or at best by marketing guys in the studio that do not have any particular taste about any movie they are splicing off. I think the only sure thing is that it does look different, and I think the look of the bridge and uniforms are fine, I was tired of that bright and white bridge.

There is something always off with the look of Chris Pine, I am not sure if it the hair color of the make up. I think I noticed his hair change colors a few times within the previous Trek movies, from blonde to brown and back. And they want him to be this smooth faced matinee hunk, but he is a fairly ruddy complexion, non-smooth face guy. It seems like they have some issues trying to make him look like DiCaprio when he is clearly not that. He is a good enough actor, and he looks a lot like his dad, they should just let him be I think.

I read the interview with Justin Lin, and while I was at first quite skeptical of this guy he sounds very well thought out, and a true fan from his youth watching the show with his dad at night. So I think that there is some hope here. Now will this be classic Trek? Nah, maybe not, but it can be a good movie that is still Star Trek, and I think that there is a pretty good chance it is better than Into Darkness.

I know it is just "wrong" to say, but I am more excited for Beyond than Force Awakens.

As Spock would say, "fascinating". Really walking on eggshells there, but love the candor.

@ Ado- Agreed, Pine just has this uneasy aura about him. He be better off playing bad guys.

I expect Beyond to be tonally similar to the previous two (which I enjoyed, with some reservations on Into Darkness) but with a more ambitious story. At this point the fan outrage is exhausting...it's been exhausting since 2009. I'm looking forward to the launch of the new TV series so trekkies have something else to obsess over--I really think that's the primary reason for all the red-faced fury over the Abrams movies; fans are afraid that this will be the only expression of the Star Trek concept going forward and that it will replace everything they ever loved. It won't be and it hasn't. It's just another variation of the Trek concept, one designed to survive in the current movie environment. I get it if some people don't like it, I would just suggest that they move on and find other things to enjoy. I'm looking forward to the movie.
