And almost as unlike a 1970s Morricone score as a Beethoven symphony!

The main minor-key theme reminds me of some of Morricone's more pop/Bacharach-esque tracks from that era. You may not hear it but I do.

No problem - you hear what you hear.

Or is the subject line just a veiled statement that he essentially doesn't like the music of John Williams?

The subject line is based on a combination of 1) My ignorance of Williams' music; 2) the fact that I love "My Friend Mr. Nobody; and 3) on more than one occasion, I have heard Williams fans cite "My Friend Mr. Nobody" as a favorite from his early period.

I like its combination of mystery and poignancy, all within what I would describe as an outer space aesthetic.

I think the best way to solve #1 and therefore the others is to watch Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters, Raiders of the Lost Ark and ET. Then throw in for good measure Schindler's List, Seven Years in Tibet, and Angela's Ashes for the more serious side of Williams. Then report back.

The Cowboys is terrific. Coplandesque Americana western score but not at all derivative of anything that came before.

Hey, "My Friend, Mr. Nobody" is still one of my all-time favorite Williams works. Nothing wrong with singing its praises as far as I'm concerned.

It is a wonderful score and clearly a forerunner of his JAN EYRE and DRACULA scores..

The main has the golden touch.

Yes, Onya, he topped it with "The Crash" from Land of the Giants.

Afterwards, Williams topped everything he has ever composed with Altman's 1972 Images

His score to the LAND OF THE GIANTS pilot episode "The Crash" is quite interesting in the fact it is one of the very few John Williams scores to have NO STRINGS whatsoever as far as I can tell.

It's also the one score the IMHO that he came the closest to doing a "Jerry Goldsmith-Like Score" in his entire career to date.

IMHO of course.

I don't think that's very helpful for Onya. JAWS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS (at least parts of both) might suit his fancy to some degree or another. The others? Not so much.

I don't believe anyone has mentioned "Fitzwilly" which is one of my all time favorite scores by Williams. I love the Mancini-smoky-jazzy vibe of the music, and the the laid back vocals that sound a lot like the Mancini Singers (or Mitch Miller or Anita Kerr). The lp album should be easy to find cheap. (P.S. after looking at the album contents again, I had forgotten it has some cues that are tongue-in-cheek marches -- just in case that turns you off.)

I think that John William's score for "My Friend, Mr. Nobody" is one of, if not, his best television scores. Every time I listen I get a new experience from it during one passage or another. It's a classic 1960s television score that will most likely NEVER be matched in the genre. And remember that he only had the Fox orchestra to pull it off. They were a very talented group of musicians.

When you're in the mood for a particular score, then that's the best one. And Williams has a number of them.

Yes, John Williams has topped that score. Look at his list of works from around 1975 through to the present day. Almost every single one of them is better than My Friend Mr. Nobody.

Consider also composers influence each other, and certain styles become genre staples (like the cliche creepy xylophone in late 1960s thrillers). Here's a clip by a different composer (prior to LiS), the later segment reminded me of the LiS flute use.

Listening to it now. I'm no longer so sure Williams has topped it. Makes me wish he'd scored the whole series^

Were either of those released?

EDIT: i have the Land of the Giants disc. I will listen again.

Images is too expensive.

So now ... 2 years later ... OnyaBirri is stating that Images is his favorite John Williams music.

See, Onya? I answered this question of yours 2 years ago and it took you 2 years to echo my reply

I can't believe the amount of people who have replied to this post.

I usually don't reply to ANY of OnyaBirri's posts because I tend to want to hold back from saying anything negative, but, in this case, REALLY, "Did John Williams Ever Top 'My Friend Mr. Nobody' ? !!!!!"

I can't believe that this post is anything other than a troll to bring on an unnecessary response to this vague and stupid question.

I am really sorry I responded to this troll, but I felt I had to.

First of all, is OnyaBirri asking if Williams ever topped that Lost In Space score as a composer in his television career, or if he ever topped it as a composer of EVERYTHING he ever wrote?

Secondly, OnyaBirri later lists his/her limited knowledge of Williams scores, yet leaves out STAR WARS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, SUPERMAN, E.T., RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and other major scores that surely almost everyone, and not just film music fans, has heard (another major thing to think about). That music has been played all over the place. He has also written many themes for the Olympics and his music has been used from 1984 until this day

Are you kidding me OnyaBirri? You've NEVER heard STAR WARS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS or E.T.? You have NEVER watched The Olympics at any time since 1984?

Truly, is this post a joke?

Jim, I refer you to my previous post:

"I don't find Onyabirri's stance particularly provocative. It's different, yes (and certainly doesn't correlate to my own view on the maestro), but that's what I find so fascinating about it. Also, I love the fact that Williams has done so many different things, that it's cool to recommend some things in his oeuvre outside the true and tried neo-romantic stuff (brilliant as that may be)."

First of all, is OnyaBirri asking if Williams ever topped that Lost In Space score as a composer in his television career, or if he ever topped it as a composer of EVERYTHING he ever wrote?

For context, my entrees into film music were "Dark Shadows" and "Lost in Space." It was on the latter show that I first heard the music of Bernard Herrmann. You may remember my telling this story on the Herrmann message board, where you and I used to communicate in a friendly manner back before you called me a troll. Those were the days.

Back on topic, two of my all-time favorite albums are Russ Garcia's "Fantastica" and Frank Comstock's "Project Comstock: Music from Outer Space," and as such, they are reference points for instrumental music in general and soundtracks more specifically. So, it should come as no surprise that I hold in high esteem Herrmann's "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and Williams' "My Friend Mr. Nobody," along with his "Lost in Space" scores in general.

I don't go for Reaganite Cinema, and I pretty much categorically hate the 1980s, so I instinctively avoid all the Spielbergian kitsch associated with that most dreaded of decades. I did have an audiophile LP with "Star Wars" on one side and "Close Encounters" on the other, but unloaded it.

Elsewhere, I have written of my love for other Williams scores/albums, including "Checkmate," "Earthquake," "The Eiger Sanction," heck, even "Jaws." While I generally avoid Spielberg, I loved "Catch Me If you Can," both the film and the score. I did see "The Post," naively hoping that it would play like a paranoid existential 70s political thriller. Boy, was I wrong. (I didn't care for the score, either.)

Are you kidding me OnyaBirri? You've NEVER heard STAR WARS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS or E.T.? You have NEVER watched The Olympics at any time since 1984?

I know the "Star Wars" theme and the "Cantina Band" segment. I can sing the five-note motif from "Close Encounters" but nothing else. As for "ET," "Raiders," "Superman," "The Olympics," etc., I couldn't sing the themes if my life depended on it.

So I sincerely apologize if my love for "My Friend Mr. Nobody" offends you. And if you can set me straight and recommend something that plays like it, I look forward to hearing it.

- Your Beloved OnyaBirri

How Onya's honest and classy responses exposed some REAL trolling.

big grin

(I should also point out, besides my poking fun, that "My Friend, Mr. Nobody" is an outstanding little piece of work.)
