I never believe missing tape rumors until word comes from the people who regularly work on these things, especially after that Conan situation. Still waiting patiently and hopefully for a CD release of these great albums. When Roger says "Licensing challenges, but not master issues," I'll take that as the authoritative word until we're told otherwise (by him). Rumors, misinformation and/or potential disinformation from tangential parties I'll take with a grain of salt. Well I hope that is the case... But until you have the masters in your hands you or someone pulls them and confirms the have them, you just never know. Ford A. Thaxton

I bump this every so often -- with the fervent hope that these recordings will be released on CD before I die. Time is getting short for a lot of us! Fingers crossed.

While I would love a stylish presentation of these 3 albums, I did acquire 2 cds on the Soundstage label called A Musical Autobiography Vol 1 and 2. All of the suites from the 3 lps are on these cds, though not in the same order. Sound was good.

The Soundstage may be lp rips. But I'm not sure. If they are, they're still the next best thing to that full-fledged presentation. I got them from Soundtrackers a couple of years back. Prices were fair. I don't know if they can get more, but they're worth it.

Never say never. I don't know about the exact reasons why these have never been released on CD, but it has been rumored that the master tapes are not traceable. If that's the sole reason, chances may now be bigger than they were a few years ago. I can see DG/Polydor (or our boutique labels) shying away from releasing vinyl rips (or transfers of commercial reel-to-reel tapes) on CD or as downloads. With the slowly (but steadily) decreasing number of archive titles that have to be re-issued and certain entities which are now more prohibitive about giving away their titles (like Sony), these UMG titles may very well be back on the radar by Intrada or Quartet. That is if the titles are truly UMG property and not subject of a third-party licensee.

It depends whether the stereo tapes can be found for a start. If they hadn't been found for what's become decades now, the cataclysmic 2008 fire on the Universal Studios lot that destroyed uncounted thousands of their music holdings and film negatives makes locating the Polydor album masters even less likely.

That's true, but I think UMG has a similar venue in the UK (hopefully organized better) where they culled together all master tapes of European origin. The complicated copyright situation makes me think that outside parties would also own copies (perhaps including the Rozsa estate?) and at least one of the albums could be mastered from a R2R tape.
