Bear McCreary is one of the few newish voices in scoring that I really enjoy. His scores for "Battlestar Galactica" and its sequel "Caprica" are among my very favorite scores of this millennium, and I really enjoy his two "Cloverfield" scores. Big fan of his Human Target scores, too. He's got the chops to make this a really great score, if he's not locked into a producer/director/studio mandated sound.

Meh. Not on the Bear train yet. Hope this is false. Ditto

The director is a big Godzilla fan so I suppose there's a ghost of a chance they'll reference Ifukube somewhere but we'll see. I liked Desplat's score but when I was watching Godzilla 2014 I found myself substituting Ifukube stuff. I want to hear Rodan's theme! It's strange but to me Ifukube's music had a grandeur that was eventually out-of-place for the Muppet Show antics of the later 60s Godzilla films, but would be perfect for the kind of scope that can be done now. Mos def!

Totally agree. The only film that supported Ifukube's music was the original Gojira. Despite the obvious miniatures, his music lent a solemn tone to the film. I read he had around a week to write, orchestrate and record the score. I love his Russian styled march ( I find his kaiju music reminiscent of Shostakovich but Ifukube said he didn't like that composers work- curious). As for McCreery, I really enjoyed what he did on 10 Cloverfield Lane and I'm hoping he brings the same scoring sensibilities to this project. It’s also gratifying to see the response to the Debussy tracked into the most recent trailer. Yes it’s been “epic sized” a bit but it’s still a gorgeous piece and many comments note how beautiful he trailer and music is. Maybe we will see a trend to favour good melodic and harmonic writing once again.

Two recent scores you might wish to seek out by Bear are both THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX and COLOSSAL. Very different films, both of which had great scores and prove he's more then ready to tackle the BIG G. Ford A. Thaxton

He has a melodic sensibility the recalls scoring from the Silver Age and this is a perfect project for him. It's actually one of the very few composer casting choices for an event film that I've been really happy to read. IMO- 10 Cloverfield Lane was one of THE best scored films I've seen in ages. The music is so integral to the story, much like Herrmann's was for Hitchcock or Williams for Spielberg's films.

I loved the way the Debussy piece was used in the trailer! Before I watched it I saw some comment that the trailer was "terribly scored." It was a counterintuitive approach but I think it was beautifully done. While I found Edwards' Godzilla a terrific bore, the initial teaser trailer for that film with the Ligeti Requiem was the finest trailer I've ever seen. It was truly outstanding.

Altough i love Desplat score, the news about McCreary are terrific. And if is saying is going to use the classic Ifukube themes, i'm massively happy

Altough i love Desplat score, the news about McCreary are terrific. And if is saying is going to use the classic Ifukube themes, i'm massively happy I'm a huge Desplat fan but I guess being a life long Godzilla enthusiast, I just didn't like his musical approach to the lead character. Just didn't seem fitting but I acknowledge that's my own personal bias. Aside from that, I've really enjoyed most of Desplat's output (I adore his Isle of Dogs and kinda wish he employed that Japanese type sensibility to Godzilla but I will give it another listen).

Desplat just can't write action music. It's weird, but *most of the time* he sounds totally lost when having to write in that vein.

It wasn't really the action music I had a problem with but more his thematic interpretation of Godzilla. I was raised on the Ifukube stuff and that will always be Godzilla's theme to me. It's like trying to replace JW Star Wars' main theme with someone else. Just wouldn't work.

I think that Christopher Young or Don Davies could be an interesting choice for this film. Not a big fun of McCreary, but I like his scores for sci-fi movies, such as 10 Cloverfield lane, Europa Report and, of course, Battlestar Galactica. It is interesting, what he will bring to the Godzilla's franchise and how he'll use and adapts Ifukube material.
