So now you know, Yavar, why I called "Holiday Set" a debut. I'm thrilled to have it as a bonus filling out an Alex North album, but in the fullness of time I wouldn't mind at all having that anthology LP released on a CD of its own. I'm glad to know that you, too, enjoy Seigmeister. As it happens, one of the very first albums I found when CD's replaced LP's was a nifty Vox collection called simply, AMERICANA, featuring Seigmeister's "Western Suite.":

AMERICANA also featured a work by the underrated Carl Ruggles.

This is a lovely release to see but given only 500 copies, I will hold off and save one for someone who really wants a copy with improved sound. Alex North still has not really clicked with me in the same way as other composers. Though perhaps I might grab this if it doesn't sell out so fast to see if it changes my mind.

I wanted to order this along with Moross' THE CARDINAL, but could not get the latter in my card. Don't know why, but the button on that page is just not working. (On my Androud smartphone; no desktop device within a hundred miles here currently.) Just The Cardinal page is not working, the others are fine.

It's working for me. Sometimes there's a weird glitch that happens - so put one in your cart. Leave the site and refresh. Then it should work to get the second one in.

Now that it was mentioned, I am tempted to order this with the Cardinal CD. That's a great idea!
Is the Holiday Set completely without any Christmas hymns? It sounds that way from the samples, but I wanted to make sure.

PS: I'm wondering if "Holiday Set" isn't the only North concert piece ever recorded, even though he wrote many such works. How I'd love to hear his clarinet concerto. The absence of North concert material is a shame of the classical recording world.

James Sedares recorded his Rhapsody for Piano, Trumpet obbligato and Orchestra :

For those who like Alex North more "modern" scores (and contemporary music) I highly recommend the listening of the works of composer Henry Brant, who orchestrated some of North best film scores (including 2001 and Dragonslayer).

Talk of early North brings to mind The Member of the Wedding, which does not happen to be included here. I seem to recall (from the Henderson book?) that North once described it as his own favorite score. In any case it is rarely mentioned in present company. I recall some gossamer scoring that might benefit from a modern recording.

Re: Rhapsody for Piano, Trumpet Obligato and Orchestra

It was previously released in its incarnation as a Universal soundtrack, Rhapsody for Four Girls in Town. Henderson uses that name, but refers to its being "adapted" for fllmic purposes, which suggests it might indeed originally have been a concert piece.

I have the Varese LP of that rhapsody. So glad you reminded me. Listened to it again after many years and it's great.

After years of laying unplayed (I mistakenly regarded it as just another lesser compilation of the kind Varese was issuing around that time), this has become one of my most played CDs over the last three or four years. Superb album. All the pieces are excellently performed and recorded, with the Eidelman tone poem being a particular treasure. Gets 10 out of 10 from me.

A hearty second on this - a great album, and the Eidelman tone poem is a special treat.

Basil and Zoragoth, since you both seem to love that Eidelman concert work as much as I do, I hope you have listened to the interview I conducted with the composer, wherein I made a point of discussing it at some length with him:

Thanks, I tried it today and the order went through. (The North Album, The Cardinal, and One-Eyed Jacks).

Great choice! I did the same minus OEJ that I have had for some time. Looking forward to exploring both The Cardinal and this new release in detail.

A (belated) bump for this one on occasion of the 30TH Anniversary of Alex North's passing. Unfortunately, the composer's work has been woefully neglected during the last few years. Time to play this (and other titles) again and hoping that one or another surprise will come up. Varèse was an eager advocate of Mr. North's music, but it seems if these days are gone.

Back in the Townson era, which has been over for a few years now.

Yes; still they omitted the stereo tracks from their "Misfits" re-issue.

For a composer that no one likes--just kidding; there are a few of us around here who get him--Alex North has been very well represented on CD. Of the many LPs issued of his scores, there are only three that have not made it to CD; Four Girls in Town (the Rhapsody mentioned earlier), A Dream of Kings, and Somebody Killed Her Husband, all wonderful scores.

Many scores never released on LP have been given CD releases. Plus others have been dramatically improved--I'm thinking of The Devil's Brigade. And even discarded scores have been released--200 and Sounder.

Still, there is so much unreleased in any format Alex North out there, especially from the 70s and 80s. Many, many scores.
