Dallas: The Early Years

1986 prequel TV movie.

By: Jerrold Immel

  • 33:36 in.
  • 48:23 in.
  • 1:10:32 in.
  • 1:11:32/1:14:13 in.*
  • 1:21:25 in.
  • About 1:31:50 in.
  • 1:40:35 in.
  • 1:41:31 in.
  • 1:44:10 in.
  • 1:51:37 in.
  • 2:00:19 in.
  • 2:03:08 in. Shortly before the cue begins, the video quality shirts and the sound goes down, so you may want top turn the volume up.
  • 2:12:27 in.
  • 2:19:50 in.
  • 2:22:08 in.
  • 2:25:50 in. New theme arrangement for the prequel.

If you are expecting a score like his work on the TV series, you'll be disappointed. Immel goes for a more old-timey approach with smaller ensemble.

    Dallas: War of the Ewings:

A 1998 TV movie. This was the final TV movie for the series.

  • 1:14:05 in.
  • 1:15:44 in. After a brief lull, the music continues.
  • 1:21:15 in.

The end credits are cut off.

In 2012 the series came back for three more seasons. A four season was planned, but the show was cancelled.

Some of the original actors returned, like Larry Hagman.

The series apparently ignored the TV movies.

Rob Cairns scored the entire new run. I checked out some of one episode, based on a comment about the dramatic scoring. Well, like the "Dynasty" remake, the scoring is not worth your time. If you sampled the "Dynasty" remake music that I linked to in the "Dynasty" thread, then you'll understand.

Culled from ASCAP and BMI. In no particular order.

Undoubtedly some of these will be from other projects with the same name and even the 2012 series.

  • Jack Scholl Ray Heindorf.
  • Fred Karlin.
  • Audrey Landers.
  • Robert Walsh.
  • Ward Chandler.
  • David Franco. (probably source music only)

  • Christopher Caliendo. (listed with Immel; also listed separately)
  • Dick Winslow.
  • Don Nemiwtz. (orchestrates for Warren, so he probably did some fill in scoring here and there)
  • Jeremy Lubbock.
  • Joseph Chemay.
  • William Walden.

  • Matthew Bowen. (listed with Cairns)
  • Pakk Hui. (listed with Cairns)
  • Phillip White. (listed with Cairns)

I forgot to mention that a decades or just over ago, Film Music Society announced it was working on Jerrold Immel's scores from this and "Knots Landing", but nothing has ever materialized and they have never given an update since then:

Our line of compact discs, featuring recordings of scores and songs restored from original production masters, will soon be expanding with releases including a never-before-heard interview with Miklós Rózsa, Jerrold Immel's music from Dallas and Knots Landing, the documentary music of Paul Sawtelle, and many other fascinating productions.

    Well, I forgot something else.

"Dallas" technically had a spin-off series: "Knots Landing"

I say "Technically", because it depends on how you look at it. "Knots Landing" was a pilot written and shopped around before "Dallas" existed. The networks weren't interested. They then created "Dallas, which of course took off, so the networks asked for a spin off, so they dusted off "Knots Landing" and presumably had to re-write it to some degree to mesh with "Dallas" (since characters crossed over). However, I read that "Knots Landing" ignored the season-long dream, so the shows kind of split into two universes at that point.

And yes, I will be covering "Knots Landing" (available load pending, that is).
