Rimmer's.wife.told him he has to walk the dog and take out trash for the.rest of time!
wink

If only you knew how I suffer, I'm also doing the washing and the cooking and all for a piece of music I first heard in 1977 which for some reason was left off every release of Orca's soundtrack. They put the "song" on but not the Main Title. But now, finally its available. The problem is finding time to listen to it with all the chores I have to do. smile

For anyone who is interested in this. The main theme from Orca is track 12 on the Orca cd. I've waited 40 years to hear this, it's absolutely gorgeous.

I am interested in this specifically, thanks for the info! Is there a noticeable improvement in sound quality?

This set was geared for people like me. I have been a Morricone fan from afar for most of my collecting life, doing much more appreciating his work than buying it, so while I like Morricone my collection isn't thick with it. A lot of these will be single dips.

As far as sound quality is concerned, it's on a par with the Music box release, which was head and shoulders above the Legend release. I can't honestly tell how good the sound is due to the fact I had a hearing test a few weeks ago and discovered I'd lost 70% of my hearing. I've now been fitted with digital hearing aids and everything sounds different (in a good way) as far as I can tell from the tracks I've listened to, it sounds fine.

An update on Orca. The extra tracks are in mono, but don't let that put you off, they don't sound a lot different to the stereo tracks, and I for one am damn glad to have them.

Thanks a lot for the feedback, Chris Rimmer! smile

What I would also be interested in is if there is any noticeable improvement in sound quality on NOVECENTO (1900) on disc 10. I have always found that the wonderful main theme (Romanzo) suffers from poor sound (trumpets) when it reaches its crescendo. Most likely this is all down to a poor recording and thus might never be rectify-able, but I'd love to find out it's not.

It sounds fine on here, there's no distortion evident at all (and I'm wearing brand new digital hearing aids) it's the best I've ever heard it sound. Also note that the track Canzone Lontana from The Serpent no longer has that annoying dropout in the second section. If I understand the blurb in the booklet, all the music has been remastered at Universal Studio. So far I'm impressed.

Thank you for the information Chris Rimmer!

I ordered the box yesterday. I hope I will receive it next week. The mono sound on the extra tracks is sad news, but The man with the harmonica and Once upon a time in the West are also in mono and I haven´t noticed it so....

What are the duration of the extra tracks?

Mathias

Orca theme 2 is a delicate flute over strings version, time 1:09
Orca theme 3 is a different version of the end title with a gorgeous flute overlay, time 1:56
Orca theme 4 is the original Main Title, time 3:11 and sounds glorious, and to be fair, I hadn't noticed they were mono until I ran them through Sound Forge.

Another nice surprise, the star of March Without Hope from GBU is complete. It's always been faded in before.

I have to say I'm impressed with what I've heard so far, the Dollars Trilogy sound wonderful.

The track Regans Theme from The Heretic that was recorded for the Hateful Eight is one of the loveliest melodies I've ever heard.

Chris, the ORCA theme 3 features outstanding organ arpeggios in the accompaniment and is a fantastic rendition of this track, when Richard Harris leaves in his boat, with the voice of Charlotte Rampling dubbed in the background. It's really stunning it wasn't part of the original LP, like the actual main title. The 1'10 flute version is superb as well but we can understand that EM left it out since it's so short.

I'm glad you like also the new recording of Regan's theme, definitively also a highlight of this box.

Laurent, is there now any info in the booklet of this box where ORCA has really been licensed this time? Indeed from Radiofilmusica in Italy as I had assumed?
Would be interesting to know.

It says;
(P) Warner Chappell Music France, sous licence Mercury (France) Editions Warner Chappell Music France.

This is what it says in the booklet. Followed by

Edda Dell'orso, soprano
Enregistrement : Orthophonic Recording Studio Rome.
Ingenieur du son : Sergio Marcotulli

I can't find anything else, sorry.

Many thanks, Chris. Very interesting. So it is just the same music publisher where Music Box had licensed their CD in France, but on the other hand Music Box after a long search couldn´t find those etxra tracks there. This is quite odd and a puzzle. So where do these extra tracks really come from? Maybe even from the music and effects track of the film as they apparently are in mono?

They're definitely mono, but they don't sound like they've come from a music /effects track (unlike the extra tracks on the Legend Red Tent) quality wise they fit in well with the stereo tracks, like I said before I hadn't realised they were mono till I ran them through Sound Forge. Maybe someday someone will find the entire score in stereo but until then this is fine.

Hi there Laurent my friend smile

I'm very happy to hear that this particular version of the ORCA theme has been included because it's my favorite version (I'm a big fan of the organ as you probably know!) along with the gorgeous opening music. The music starts with the B-part of the melody performed by the strings and organ (played in a lower register than in the 'known' version, track #1, which is also used in the film) with a second organ track playing arpeggios in the accompaniment. The music then continues with the A-part of the melody performed by the string section with a flute playing in counter-point, really beautiful stuff!

There's at least one more unreleased version in the film where the melody is played by an oboe in a high register (or possibly an E-flat clarinet, the 'piccolo' member of the clarinet family) with string tremolos in the background.

I really would like to get my hands on the three unreleased versions but alas, I cannot afford to buy the CD-box at the moment. It sounds like you already bought it yourself.

Is there any English-language retailers/websites selling this set?

For people who would like to listen to "Orca" in roughly chronological order, this would be it:
12, 11, 1, 3, 9, 8, 4, 10, 13, 6, 14.
The music from "Aperture e incontro" and "I primi ghiacci" is included twice, as both tracks are also featured in "Orca (tema dell'orca IV)" and "Montati l'arrivo al polo" respectively. The "Montati l'arrivo al polo" suite is slightly out of sequence and also partly unused. "Dialogo dei ricordi" doesn't appear in the film at all. So of the 38 minutes of score that have now been released only 32 are heard in the film. Actually less, considering that parts of "Montati l'arrivo al polo" are unused and the source music “Un ballo in casa“ isn't heard for long in the film. Anyway, what we have is fantastic, and to finally have the complete main title sequence on CD is a joy. The sound quality is a vast improvement over the old Legend release (I haven't heard the Music Box version).
So much for "Orca", but the whole set is a marvel. The introduction and interview are printed in three languages: French, Italian and English. Beautiful layout and well chosen pics. Very nicely done. And so much music still to discover!

Anyone else having difficulty removing the discs from the box set?

I've been listening to the Jean-Paul-Belmondo set and realised that the track 7 Nocturne from Peur sur la ville is actually the theme from Orca, I'd never realised that before.

This really is an amazing set and not bad value £82 inc postage from Amazon France.

Thanks for the infos, Chris, concerning ORCA.

Hopefully a stand-alone release can be realised in the future.
