SEASON 5:

I am using a different channel for season five, so the volume is higher and the quality is better.

The end credits now open with Rosenman tone pyramid.

For some reason some rare episodes this season have no composer credited.

I think I cited all but one or two cues, but I'm not sure how much of this I'd include on a season five set of scoring.

I cited almost every cue (minus source music).

Having some episodes with no credited composer is helping me plow along more quickly. I hope to literally be done the last day of January, hopefully a day or two earlier, with the series.

    Finishing SEASON 5:

I am using a different channel for season five, so the volume is higher and the quality is better.

    "The Hobie Redman Story"

  • 4:44 in.

    "The Malachi Hobart Story"
    By: Axel Stordahl
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4QzvMbmAO0

This is Stordahl's only effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 3:00 in.
  • 4:48 in.
  • 4:57 in.
  • 10:00 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 17:48 in.
  • 19:06 in.
  • 23:31 in.
  • 26:44 in.
  • 28:41 in.
  • 30:39 in.
  • 34:19 in.
  • 41:55 in.
  • 45:45 in.
  • 47:56 in.

I think I cited every single cue, so I might as well say the complete score should be released.

Stordahl does a good job. I would have liked to have heard more from him.

He has few credits on his IMDb. If it wasn't for a over three dozen episodes of "McHale's Navy", he'd have barely scored anything.

After yells of lynching, Hale fires his gun into the air and lectures the angry mob.
Hale: "What are you? A Bunch of animals?! You were all so Godly a few seconds ago. Now that you pride's hurt, you act like mad dogs. All right, you were suckered and this man's a fraud, but the God he talked about is up there just the same. He sees what you're doing. Are you all frauds? Or is there any Christian decency left in any of you?! Maybe there's a line of scripture you all ought to remember: Judge not let ye not be judged."

    "The Dr. Denker Story"
    By: Richard Shores
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBu7Vae-y6M

    Highlights:
  • 1:11 in.
  • 2:05 in.
  • 29:08 in.
  • 37:25 in.
  • 39:55 in.
  • 42:05 in.
  • 44:54 in.
  • 47:35 in.

    "The Lonnie Fallon Story"
    By: Sidney Fine
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2KZ_GA9_DY

    Highlights:
  • 0:40 in.
  • 3:34 in.
  • 8:00 in.
  • 17:05 in.
  • 21:12 in.
  • 26:09 in.
  • 40:40 in.
  • 45:30 in.

That might be nearly the entire episode score, but I can't say the whole thing should be released.

    "The Daniel Clay Story"
    Music Score: William Lava
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKgVh-UdT5Y

This is Lava's only effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 1:13 in.
  • 2:34 in.
  • 5:24 in. Some playful material for Charlie (pizzicato strings, staccato woodwinds).
  • 9:21 in.
  • 10:42 in.
  • 12:03 in. Sounds like the cut cuts in suddenly, like some of the opening was cut off.
  • 18:01 in.
  • 19:18 in.
  • 20:13 in.
  • 23:18 in.
  • 24:42 in.
  • 27:34 in.
  • 34:11 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 45:50 in.
  • 47:27 in.

Lava contributes a fine effort. Another composer I would have liked to have heard more from on the series.

Unless lost track, I cited all but one cue. The one cue I didn't cite really isn't needed, so I would say everything else should be released.

    "The Wagon Train Mutiny"

The is the final effort by Goldsmith for the series. Yes, just two episodes.

Well, I think that "The Ah Chong Story" is a superior score and overall more consistent.

  • 20:00 in.
  • 21:31 in.
  • 23:58 in.
  • 26:20 in. I don't say it often enough, but when a composer scores a scene perfectly, maybe I should. Just the right mix of whimsy, wildness, and plain bouncy stuff for Charlie.
  • 29:45 in.
  • 33:47 in. Short cue. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 37:25 in.
  • 38:27 in.
  • 42:10 in.
  • 43:17 in.
  • 44:08 in.

Guest-starring Jeanette Nolan. "Gunsmoke" fans know her as Sally, who was in some episodes and got a spin-off series called "Dirty Sally".

That's all but four or five cues (unless I missed some brief stingers while skimming).

Well, that's another two days shaved off.

Well, I think that "The Ah Chong Story" is a superior score and overall more consistent.

Is it superior in terms of thematic material, or what?

Superior for it's consistent use of musical ideas, theme, overall cohesiveness (which isn't really necessary for me in a score, but the second effort is clearly not as strong of a score). It doesn't mean it's bad, it doesn't mean it doesn't have listenability, and it doesn't mean it's poorly written, but "The Ah Chong Story" clearly stands out.

  • 36:03 in. Fight music. And the cue after the commercial break (with more of that staccato brass fight music).
  • 38:46 in.
  • 46:25 in.

    "The John Gillman Story"
    By: Sidney Fine
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iv_hniGoDa0

This is the final effort by Fine for the series.

    "The Barbara Lindquist Story"
    By: Lalo Schifrin
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fj8xy0wLKwQ

This is the only effort for the series by Schifrin.

    Highlights:

  • 32:42 in.
  • 35:39 in.
  • 41:50 in.
  • 43:27 in.
  • 49:05 in.

That's nearly the entire score I cited.

Schifrin's mostly edgy, aggressive, punchy score with tension and drama is dynamite.

According to IMDb, this was only his seventh score, not even a decade into his career.

    "The Brian Conlin Story"

  • 18:57 in.
  • 22:05 in.
  • 41:39 in.
  • 44:11 in. Irish spirited/lightly flavored playful fight music. Just over four minutes long.

  • 38:38 in.
  • 40:30 in.
  • 45:00 in.
  • 46:27 in.
  • 48:57 in.

    Enjoyed Cleave's score a lot.

According to his IMDb credits, this was one of the last things he did: one film and two episodes of "I Spy". Of course, like always, IMDb credits are rarely complete.

    "The Clay Shelby Story"
    By: Hans J. Salter
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik9qVXuWaZc

This is the final effort by Salter for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 0:06 in.
  • 2:44 in.
  • 3:37 in. Re-used shot of Indians across a mountain ridge. I forget the episode name, but in the episode it was commented that must be like a hundred of them and it's too many to fight; no problem here!
  • 5:00 in.
  • 8:55 in.
  • 12:10 in.
  • 17:16 in.
  • 21:05 in.
  • 23:36 in.
  • 32:49 in.
  • 36:15 in.
  • 46:01 in.
  • 48:07 in.

Doing a quick search, there was apparently no Ironhand (or Iron Hand) Indian chief.

    "The Hector Heatherton Story"
    By: Nathan Scott
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNJcMhhzYBw

This is the final effort by Scott for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 0:05 in.
  • 3:47 in. Over three minutes long. Music for imaginary flying.
  • 8:08 in. More music for imaginary flying.
  • 10:19 in.
  • 14:49 in.
  • 20:14 in.
  • 23:27 in. Over three minutes long.
  • 28:59 in.
  • 34:07 in.
  • 38:19 in. Short cue. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 39:35 in.
  • 42:00 in.
  • 44:21 in. Almost two minutes long.
  • 46:21 in.
  • 48:31 in.

Just a delightful score this was. I cited nearly every single cue so I might as well say the complete score should be released.

"Remember you're the father of eight children and if you kill yourself, I'll never forgive you!"

    "The Silver Lady"
    By: Lyn Murray
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93QWGwO_sAs

    Highlights:
  • 0:06 in.
  • 4:29 in.
  • 6:02 in.
  • 7:41 in.
  • 12:35 in.
  • 15:37 in.
  • 18:52 in. Really? We're supposed to believe it was so funny they laughed hard for over thirty seconds? That part I can't suspend my disbelief over!
  • 22:18 in.
  • 32:20 in.
  • 33:44 in.
  • 43:22 in.
  • 44:53 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 46:50 in.

And that's the final credited score of the series. This was the second-to-last episode.

Tomorrow I'll double back and see if any of the episodes I missed are now up. If not, I'll double back to another series I didn't finish, then next week it's another western (short lived though).

I also have to go back to season five -- there is at least one credit I missed simply because it wasn't on IMDb and I didn't double check every episode. I'll have to check some others, too.

    "The Tom Tuckett Story"
    By: Alexander Courage
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXjMNYgS754

This is the final effort for the series by Courage.

    Highlights:
  • 12:46 in. Including Indian music.
  • 29:29 in.
  • 31:26 in.
  • 32:57 in.
  • 40:46 in.
  • 41:47 in.
  • 45:54 in.
  • 53:19 in.
  • 55:24 in.

Another over all disappointing effort by Courage. I'm glad he's not coming back for the series again.

On a set of season three scoring, I'd not include much from this, just to make room for better material from previous episode scores.

    "The Tracy Sadler Story"
    By: Leigh Harline
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lx2mTfxNHb4

This is the only effort for the series by Harline.

    Highlights:
  • 5:15 in.
  • 27:13 in.
  • 29:16 in.
  • 40:09 in.
  • 41:24 in.
  • About 48:10 in.
  • 51:48 in.
  • 53:33 in.

There's not as much score in this episode as others before it, so don't let the lesser amount of cited tracks fool you.

    "The Alexander Portlass Story"
    By: Ernest Gold
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZEkDMK2-IE

This is the final effort for the series by Gold.

    Highlights:
  • About 2:00 in.
  • 3:27 in.
  • 23:10 in.
  • 27:34 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 29:21 in.
  • 35:49 in.
  • 45:27 in.
  • 50:54 in.
  • 54:19 in.

    Guest-starring Peter Lorre.

    "The Christine Elliott Story"
    By: Roy Webb
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6n5o44 (load volume)

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 2:50 in.
  • About 5:10 in.
  • 9:25 in.
  • 10:40 in.
  • 14:23 in.

  • 22:08 in.
  • 26:51 in.

  • 31:15 in.
  • 32:06 in.
  • 32:42 in.
  • 33:50 in.
  • 37:25 in.
  • 39:10 in.
  • 41:33 in.
  • 45:40 in.
  • 47:57 in.

    That's nearly every single cue.

    "The Joshua Gilliam Story"
    By: Henri Rene
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThG6PXTf-bA

This is the final effort for the series by Rene. And according to his IMDb page, this is the second-to-last thing he scored -- he has a short scoring career.

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 2:00 in.
  • 6:08 in.
  • 17:35 in.
  • 22:56 in.
  • 29:00/30:01 in. Now that's how a "Witch" cooking at night should be scored.
  • 33:51 in.
  • 37:39 in.
  • 44:36 in.
  • 46:42 in.
  • 49:40 in. Over four minutes of quiet suspense music.
  • 54:59 in.

Two episodes where the guest star is a teacher, in a row.

    (40:55)

    "Maggie Hamilton Story"
    Music Score: Roy Webb
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NU9O1M6m08s

This is not only the final effort for the series by Webb, but it's his final scoring credit according to his IMDb resume. And it wasn't death that stopped him, as he died about two decades later. No Music Department credits continuing after that either, he just plumb ended his career apparently. I'm sure somebody here knows why, 'cause there's always somebody who knows this stuff.

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 1:05 in.
  • 3:40 in.
  • 10:33 in.
  • 13:18 in.
  • 16:46 in.
  • 21:50 in.
  • 23:32 in.
  • About 32:25 in. And the cue after the commercial break. Just over seven minutes long, both cue times combined.
  • 41:23 in.
  • 42:21 in.
  • 46:10 in.
  • 49:32 in. Just over two minutes long.
  • 53:30 in.
  • 54:20 in.
  • 55:54 in.

    "The Jonas Murdock Story"
    By: Nathan Scott
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZW4XQofdBOI

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 3:34 in.
  • 9:40 in.
  • 10:54 in.
  • 13:02 in.
  • 17:07 in.
  • 18:28 in.
  • 20:10 in.
  • 23:27 in. Five minutes long.
  • 29:30 in.
  • 30:22 in.
  • 31:55 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 44:05 in.
  • 45:00 in.
  • 48:42 in.

    I'll finish season three tomorrow.

It was rumored that Webb stopped composing after a house fire destroyed most of his scores, though R.K.O. Radio kept some of his feature film scores, and Christopher Palmer started The Roy Webb Collection.

When I got jack squat else to do, it's well worth the time to hear all this great television scoring.

    Concluding SEASON 5:

An episode of season five I missed, like described earlier.

Sadly, none of the other episodes I had to skip due to no loads, are up, so this is it for now.

I forgot to mention that unlike the majority of television scores I have done, there was actually a release for this; a selection of cues (presumably re-recorded) released on LP back in the day:

    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k8iT2C1Y6PdoFeaKiPYVC_ctrcqNcxoVU

I should note the last tracked noted as the closing theme, is not the end credits but some cue from an un-identified episode.

  • 36:57 in.
  • About 39:00 in.
  • 44:05 in.
  • 46:33 in.

That's probably over half the episode score I cited.

Still no other missed episodes from the season are up.

    Concluding SEASON 4:

Doubling back to the only episode of this season that I missed.

    "The Prairie Story"
    Music Score: Stanley Wilson
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkPFfCmLs4s

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in. With wordless religious-esque choir.
  • 25:57 in. And the piece after the commercial break.
  • 30:27 in.
  • 36:51 in.
  • 38:48 in.
  • 40:51 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 47:01 in.

This score is unlike any in the rest of the series, and sounds more like Wilson trying to show the depth of his talents by creating a score that's nearly all wordless female and male choral work. Aside from a little piano thrown in sparingly in some cues, there are no other instruments. I cited everything except one short piece which may have been chopped off another cue.

    Continuing SEASON 2:

Doubling back to season two episodes that were not available at the time.

Ignore the empty episodes afterwards; just there so I can fetch them Friday and do more.

    "Around the Horn"
    Music Score: Frank Skinner

This is the only effort for the series by Skinner.

    Highlights:
  • 1:13 in.^
  • 4:40 in.^
  • 6:02 in.^
  • 8:27 in.^
  • 11:39 in.^
  • 12:41 in.^
  • 16:00 in.^
  • 17:29 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 22:34 in.^
  • 27:43 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^
  • 28:38 in.^
  • 30:40 in.^(32:15)
  • 34:41 in.^
  • 36:10 in.^
  • 39:31 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^
  • 48:47 in.^

I really liked Skinner's seafaring music -- did he doing anything like that for any sailing movies?

    "The Juan Ortega Story"

  • 15:20 in.^

  • 23:57 in.^
  • 31:23 in.^
  • 34:53 in.^

The entire score is performed on solo acoustic Spanish guitar. Probably by the composer himself.
