Got this from SAE and used the opportunity to finally grab CONTRACT ON CHERRY STREET. BOOM.

This seems a missed opportunity to have a definitive release of all the music composed by both Morricone and Carpenter. I'm guessing there's all sorts of legal wrangling that has prevented that from ever happening, or maybe Morricone himself?

I think that Carpenter's own contributions were limited to single tones and drones. Not knocking it, it was very effective in the movie but I'm not sure it would stand up on its own.

Yes, it was effective in the movie, but the cues did not really belong to the Morricone score. (I would not have minded were they added in a bonus section, but if they aren't there, well, no biggie.)

Ah thanks for the clarification. Its been a long time since I saw the movie. Agreed it would have been nice to have them as bonus tracks but I am looking forward to being able to own the score finally.

Yes, if you do not own the score, this is definitely the opportunity to get it. I actually own the original LP - one of my all time favorite soundtrack LP covers - and the Varèse Sarabande CD and have seen the movie multiple times and and know the Carpenter cues and the BSX recording etc...
The Carpenter cues, as William R. pointed out, were effective in the movie, but of a transitional, atmospheric "tones and drones" nature. It was synth tone padding (well done, but nothing more), but the actual music score is the Morricone score, and it's all on the Quartet release.

In response to many above posts:

•John's music
"It has been lost to time."
The reason it's not included is that it doesn't exist. But...

•Best Ennio + John
Sacred Bones 2LP release of Ennio's music and John's rerecording he just made of his cues.
$60 and no digital files keeps me from buying.

•Film Order vs. Album Order of The Thing
As far as I understand (and as William R. stated above), Ennio recorded the music as a library of sounds for John to use in the film. It was not recorded to picture. The albums present the music as it was recorded, not how it was edited into the picture. I may not have this 100% correct.

•Film Order vs. Album Order In General
There is a belief by some Record Producers that the score as it appears in the film does not make for the best listening experience on disc. So for years, score often were released in what was considered the best listening order.

I also think the BSX recording features a re-recording of the John Carpenter cues, and they are very well done indeed.

Years ago I really wanted a complete The Thing album but that BSX disc proved to me that a c&c The Thing wouldn't work. Carpenter's cues are mostly underscore, and quite jarring in a listening experience with Morricones score. That said, yes the BSX recreation of Carpenter's music is very fine.

I absolutely agree. If the Carpenter tracks would have been included, they should have been "bonus cues" and not mixed with the Morricone cues. Carpenter composed only about 8 minutes of atmospheric synth droning, worked well in the movie, but not as a listening experience within the context of Morricone's actual music.

I would pay the $60 if it were in CD format as well as LP. I would take the digital files too but not a requirement since I can rip my CD to digital. This would have been an awesome release to have this done like the Star Wars LP-Style CD's I have. The artwork and disc art are amazing.

I just want Sacred Bones to release the two extra tracks (VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED and BODY BAGS) from some vinyl variation of Anthology, either as a digital download or some sort of deluxe edition on CD.

Yep. I don't have it, so I'll be pulling the trigger on it.

It's not a joke, Einstein, it's a FACT. If you don't like Hateful 8, that's fine, but don't fuck with my mojo. So just crawl back in your corner of the basement.

Once again:

As a bonus, you get to complete the Hateful 8 soundtrack!

Because orchestral music is a living, breathing thing. It is supposed to be performed and re-performed, and not stuck to a "single" version, fixed onto a recording. .

Well said! I recall reading an interview with Howard Shore at the time of the premiere of his LORD OF THE RINGS symphony. He said that John Mauceri had urged him to the project, so that the music wouldn't die.

No shit. We all know that Hateful 8 used portions of The Thing. I’m saying that you continually stating this is redundant.

But that is not what you said. You indicated that I had made a joke, and I had not.

At least be consistent.

Oh, not sure if I mentioned, but as a bonus, you get to complete the Hateful 8 soundtrack!I
