George Clooney is a wonderful person and humanitarian.... and a consistently terrible director.

Of the films he's directed -- CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND, GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, LEATHERHEADS, THE IDES OF MARCH, THE MONUMENTS MEN, SUBURBICON and now this -- only GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK held together, and I would argue that the power of that movie was its subject material rather than what Clooney did with it.

What's wrong with THE IDES OF MARCH? It's a very good movie.

There are no dinossaurs or robot-cars.

I was really looking forward to this movie. And was utterly disappointed. The concept was potentially very good, but the execution was not. The script was bad, the sets were bad (space is at a premium on a spacecraft) for a crew of 5, all of them knowing the lyrics to a Neil Diamond song that would have been 80 years in their past was bad, the science bad . . . etc. I might have liked it when I was 12, but this was so underwhelming I wish I had not turned it on. And the score matched. An utter waste of time.

Haven't seen the movie. The score is ok. Sounds like Desplat in his usual self mixed with RCP/modern type synths. It never got me excited, but at times, felt pleasant enough.

Your opinion is based on wrong assumptions and perceptions. But I‘m glad you’re feeling better now.

Not related to the music, but I'm surprised how different the movie was from the book it was based on, which I loved.
It's one of the most touching books I've read in a long time, and pretty much the key to that: much more communication between the two main characters, was almost missing from the book. And in the book they had no prior connection to each other, which is much more believable, and no silly moon-planet that can support human life orbiting Jupiter. They seemed to take out the best parts of the book and replace them with utter nonsense.

There are exclusively RCP synths?

First notice about this... :/

Specially when Desplat uses electronic, there are more with his touch than the typical copy/paste Zimmer

Yes, but that's far from the Desplat we like to listen to...

There are no dinosaurs or robot cars in GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, either, and John was okay with that one.

That's your thoughts, not mine, i'm listen all of his albums and love his variety of ideas in his scores: action, drama, comedy.

Largo Winch have electronics and still a damn good score from Desplat and maybe i'm of that people who have found very entertaining Firewall, even isn't as good as Hostage.

Desplat isn't only a really good composer with drama, in fact, in one of the best, not just for drama.

Just watched this on Netflix.
Some of the more emotional/beautiful passages reminded me of John Williams (Stepmom maybe).
The score was great overall, with just some of the tension or suspense cues being typically modern generic.
I quite enjoyed the film too, even though it started to get silly during the second hour.
I'm a sucker for films set in icy/snowy locales.
And Clooney sure loves an accident on a space station, doesn't he.

Sounds no different than copy/paste Zimmer to me. The sounds you hear in cues like "Blood Drop" are basically cut from the same cloth.

Of course those are my thoughts! smile
I, too, have the scores you mentioned and I consider "Largo Winch" to be prime Desplat ("Hostage" is one step below), miles ahead of what I've heard from "The Midnight Sky". Hey, I don't mind the presence of electronics, it's how you use them and in the case of his newest effort I don't find the synth work appealing...

Getting off the electronics topic, you don't even have to go back to Largo Winch to find music miles ahead. Just this past year, he did Little Women, which is a masterpiece compared to The Midnight Sky. While I think The Shape of Water is overrated, it is also much better than The Midnight Sky. Staying with dramas, you can also include The Imitation Game among others.

With that said, The Midnight Sky has highlights and is not a bad score by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm so glad someone noticed that, I was thinking the same thing. Some moments definitely had a STEPMOM vibe. Not like there was any direct quoting, just sounded very much like Williams in that mode.

Well, you started with 'we like to listen', there is a Desplat 'we don't like to listen'?

I don't recall Little Women to have something to compared to The Midnight Sky (aside are to very different movies), and quite like it back when i listened in 2019. The Imitation Game are far better than that score.

Never cared for ZERO DARK THIRTY. That's a Desplat score I can certainly live without.
It's the exception, of course, not the rule. That's why Alexandre is one of my favorite modern composers!

This is from a review of the film by a well known Greek critic (translated):

"In fact, the only survivor of "The Midnight Sky" is Alexandre Desplat, who gives sparks of lyricism and emotional grandeur that the film does not have, sometimes breaking the dramatic tones with compositions reminiscent of the Scandinavian jazz school. The man is simply huge and the two Oscars for music he holds in his hands (so far) are very few..."

Wow!

Didn't like the film very much and thought the music was mostly buried in the mix but i did like a bit of what i heard, so will check out the album. I generally like Desplat.
