I recall some talk of an early version of the opening song, which supposedly started with a quote of the ”flight into space” theme. Can’t recall where this was said, but very likely somewhere on this forum. Is there truth to this claim?

That's a good point, there may be versions of the song that would expand the album out.

Cheers

This is roughly how it breaks down:

Gunbarrel: 0:24
Hijacking the shuttle: 0:53
Freefall: 1:32 (two shorter cues separated in the film)
Arrival at the chateau: 0:44
Starting the centrifuge: 0:44
Photographing Venini glass blueprints: 1:27
Following Goodhead in Venice: 0:40
Gondola chase: 2:18
Hang gliding in the Amazon: 0:34
Shuttle launch: 0:36
Switching off the gravity: 0:33
Jaws and Dolly in the space station wreckage: 1:00

Total approx. time of unreleased music: 11:25

This is up for discussion ,is there more unreleased music listed above from Moonraker that has been missed ??

Presumably that doesn't include the Magnificent Seven theme or the classical snippets (Bond's lap of honour round St Marks Square after the gondola chase and Jaws and Dolly's slomo romance bit near the end)?

Regardless, it looks like most of the missing cues are very short - less than a minute - which (for my money) makes an album less satisfying as the music doesn't really have a chance to develop. Though maybe they could be amalgamated into longer suites? I know many don't like that treatment but generally I prefer it to lots of tiny tracks.

Also - were Freefall and Gondola Chase left off the original album because they're the main bits of the score that use the James Bond Theme and Barry didn't want to include them?

FSM user The Cat used to have a website with a list of the unreleased cues for every Bond film. Alas, the site is long gone and I haven't seen The Cat active on here for years. Anyone know what happened to him?

That's Gregory Hubai, as I recall. He wrote Torn Music, the book on rejected scores. I think he shows up from time to time. He still does liner notes for some limited edition releases (I forget which label -- perhaps more than one). I haven't heard from his in two or three years via e-mail.

I think I have his old website link save in an old bookmarks file. IF so, I can probably pull it u via a website like Archive.org.

In Moonraker, there is also the Rio music when Bond is at the cable car.

Sounds a bit like Statue Dance from Deadfall, but very clearly a Barry composition.

Yes, the tapes include an alternate arrangement of the title song that opens with the Drax Space Station theme, just like the end title arrangement does, except more slowly and majestically. The tapes also have a couple demos of Paul Williams singing different lyrics to the title song.

The master tapes for the first three films are lost so whatever's missing from Dr. No, FRWL, and Goldfinger would have to be lifted from DMEs, which is a problem in and of itself. Same goes with Moonraker.

Moonraker came up in another thread and someone in the know indicated that the Paris recording sessions were found and a high-quality digital backup was performed. Not sure of the validity of the comments, but the poster seemed sincere. For a time I thought LLL would be releasing a Bond album each year during the holidays. I am sure there are multiple reasons for the pause, but hopefully, the already released albums were decent sellers.

Yes I very much was hoping that La La Records would be releasing a Bond expanded soundtrack each year on Black Friday, however I think the release of No Time To Die has stopped this happening, that’s why we all hope the film will now be released in October 2021 to enable further expanded Bond scores in 2022 the 60th Anniversary

A fellow member Tango Urilla in 2013 listed the Moonraker unreleased music see below

I've got a cue for Switching Off Gravity which is about 1.05 and just before that is another half minute track when Drax launches the first globe.

I've got a cue for Switching Off Gravity which is about 1.05 and just before that is another half minute track when Drax launches the first globe.

The short cue is called "Marines Get Ready" because I think it begins when the Space Marines launch and continues under the launching of the first globe; it's a little under 30 seconds. The cue sheets list "Switching Off Gravity" under the title "Emergency Stop" with a runtime around 1:10.

If you are really obsessive, there is a 9 second tag to the gondola chase heard after the Tritsch Tratsch Polka. The Gregorian chanting heard is credited to Barry, as is about a minute of Mardi Gras music. (Most of the Mardi Gras source music is "Dawn of the Gods" by Renato Verdade.) Also, the runtime of "Freefall" listed about seems to lack the final part of the sequence, "Circus", which is around 20 seconds.

Somehow I missed that we were so close to OHMSS and "Moonraker." I hope these (and the others ones) will materialize. Too god to be true. Any source should be allowed to have them as complete as possible: DME, m&e tracks, whatever generation of dub tapes, water-damaged tapes, et al.

I would have thought, Stefan, anything that can be run past a tape head has long been digitised by now. The rest is just legal snakes and ladders.

I am pretty sure I used every last possible cue on the Diamonds CD. But we did have a longer version of the title song (alternate take, extra verse) that they didn't want to do the vocal clearance for.

Sinatra, who was a friend of Cubby's, was supposed to sing the song but the deal fell through.

That's what I hope, but you never can be sure. We've had surprises in both directions: releases of material which we thought had long been lost or releases of scores which we thought should be available in pristine condition (yet had to be mastered from inferior sources).

And let's not forget, according to Lukas, that Barry recorded guitar twang versions of both "Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and "Thunderball." Both never released. They would have been on the expanded Thunderball, but there was no room. I would love to get those!

As to the silly rumors that there is an unreleased MOONRAKER overture—bullshit, okay? That seems to have started with a bootleg that claimed to include it when it was something like one of those Erich Kunzel recordings.

Cheers
