My rarest score is probably my 2-disc FYC CD set of PATRIOTS DAY, by Reznor and Ross.

It contains the complete score and was only sent to certain Golden Globe voters.

Other guild members only got a 1-disc version, which contains the commercial album, which was otherwise never released on CD.

And since the score was never nominated for any awards, the circulation of even that 1-disc FYC was pretty limited too.

I have original Label X Lps and CDs of Body Heat and Dragonslayer--all 4 numbered. The LPs are 45rpm! and the Body Heat was extremely hard to get and much in demand prior to the FSM release.

Also have original promo LPs of Images and Robin and Marian and some old odd thing on LP coupling Coogan's Bluff and General With the Cockeyed Id.

I remember the Coogan's Bluff/General With the Cockeyed Id lp. If I recall, the outer jacket was blue with a drawing of Coogan and city scape. I remember buying a copy at Jimmy D's (Dayton's) on Broadway in the Union Square area of Manhattan back in the very late 70's or early 80's. Didn't care for the music on it and got rid of it, only to get the cd of Coogan's Bluff many years later which I like. Too bad General With the Cockeyed Id never made it to a legit cd. Maybe one day.

Varese cd issue of "The Serpent and the Rainbow" gotta be pretty rare. Wasn't it pulled quickly after release?

Almost all the cds in my Italian soundtracks collection are printed in 300 / 500 copies.
Some of them, todays, are extremely rare.
I have also some extremely rare 7" records vinyls, within italian TV themes from japan anime series.
One of them (Ginguiser, blue vinyl) was printed in less than 40 copies; another one (Il gatto Doraemon, white vinyl) is a Limited Edition of 22 copies only!
In the field of American scores, probably the rarest I own is the first Intrada promo of Young Sherlock Holmes.

Officially numbered would be a couple 1k comedy scores from Quartet.

I do wonder how low the production count was on my Batteries Not Included from Intrada is since it wasn’t available for very long, I rarely see if for sale, and when I do the asking price is absurd.

Shadowrun: Hong Kong by Jon Everist. IIRC the CD set was limited to 100 copies.

I have the aforementioned Body Heat releases on LP & CD, long before the FSM release.

And from about the same time period, I have The Reivers cd that was put out by a very young Robert Townson on his Masters Film Music label in 1990. The one with Bob Peak art on the cover, probably the only reason I bought it.

I also have Star Maidens by Berry Lipman.

And I don't know how rare they are, but I have both volumes of Lionheart by Goldsmith on CD, again from a young Townson. I understand volume 2 was harder to get. Maybe distribution was bad for vol.2.

I remember paying a lot of money for Goldsmith's Ransom (aka The Terrorists) on LP, long before a CD release. I don't think that soundtrack had a North American release. Mine is a UK release from 1975.

IMAGES, ROBIN AND MARIAN, and the COOGAN/COCKEYED ID were all 1970s plain-label bootlegs, so they don't count in the realm of authorized, collectible rarities. The Label X releases were legitimate, though; I also own and kept their LP and CD of BODY HEAT. That LP (of a score I had craved) only appeared a full two years after the film's premiere; the audiophile 45rpm recording was priced at $29.95 -- maybe triple the typical price of LPs in 1983 -- but was recalled almost immediately. I have no idea how many other fortunate collectors got to snatch up that BODY HEAT album as I did, but private dealers asked astronomical prices for years before the 2,000-copy CD appeared.

About 15 years ago on eBay, I got an Oscars promo of MULAN for a price I was willing to spend (which has helped me pass the time until either Disney or Intrada releases it complete). While I personally have never seen another copy of that promo for sale, I expect more of them were mailed to Academy voters than many limited-release CDs are pressed for this community. (EDIT: Maybe I just never saw the MULAN Oscars promo again because I didn't search further after I picked one up. There's one on eBay right now from Japan -- sky-high -- and another sold just last month.)

And no, Goldsmith's LP of RANSOM/TERRORISTS never got a U.S. release (the film barely did, itself), so that imports of that British vinyl was our only chance Stateside. As for LIONHEART, my feeling was that many fewer copies of Vol. 2 were actually issued because sales of Vol. 1 had been so disappointing. Townson and Varese must hardly have expected that the film would get even less American distribution than THE TERRORISTS had managed!

... the private collection of the Late Robert Townson ...
Mr Townson is still very much with us, but not with Varese.

Maybe he means he's always late to dinner and parties.

Edward Williams – Music For Life On Earth - BBC 1979 (released 1980) - i am sure there was only a short run of this LP maybe no more than x500.

Sorry for that. When I got it on ebay there was an explanation of its origin which I thought I'd saved a copy of, but I can't seem to find it now. Robert was a name that was at the back of my head as was Tom Null. You'll probably tell me now that he's still with us. I'll fall back on the old man defence.

Maybe not for much longer if people start paying the eBay prices seen since Monday's announcement...

I once bought a 4(!) cd set, from an official wellknown distributor: Hellraiser by Christopher Young, with Safety reel and safety mixes: original Score Mixes and Fragments, with 4 factory printed cd'rs, I gues this is a very rare set. No clue how many of these sets have been produced and sold like this.

The complete score?

I think it is...wink

You're definitely right about that. About 300 to 400 copies are out there and remember it was featured in the now OOP Little Shop of Horrors Varese box from a few years ago so that makes it rare again smile

My most limiteds are:

Transporter 2 - Alexandre Ariza (the score album that was immediately withdrawn for reasons unknown a real pressed CD not the CDR that's floating around)
Metro - Steve Porcaro (which is an industry promo)
Little Giants - John Debney (signed by the composer which makes it more limited)
Constantine - Brian Tyler (the complete orchestral score promo signed by Mr. Tyler)
Orca -Ennio Morricone (Music Box withdrawn release)
Blood In Blood Out - Bill Conti (real Varese release)
Shaft In Africa - Johnny Pate (Hip-O Records exclusive LP reproduction CD)
Alan Silvestri Selected Themes 2 Disc promo set
Shopgirl- Barrington Pheloung

Amongst others.
